Delhi’s air quality worsened on October 1, 2026, with the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) rising to 166, in the moderate category, from 129 a day earlier. Hindustan Times reported the readings from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. The report also recorded a hot, rain-free day and cited a forecast for possible rain on October 6–7.
Delhi’s AQI rose from satisfactory to moderate
Hindustan Times reported that Delhi’s AQI was 166 on October 1, compared with 129 on September 30. The paper said the city had remained in the satisfactory band for at least the five preceding days. The October 1 reading therefore marked a move into the next AQI category, not a reading in the poor range.
The AQI bands reproduced in the report are:

At 166, the October 1 reading sat within the moderate band of 101–200. The report identified PM10 as the prominent pollutant and cited the weakening effect of recent rainfall on pollutant dispersion as a factor in the deterioration. Those are explanations reported by the paper, not a separately established causal analysis.
October 1 was hot and rain-free
According to the IMD observations reported by Hindustan Times, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 24°C and a maximum of 35.2°C on October 1, with no rain that day. The Ridge station recorded a minimum of 19.6°C.

Rain was forecast for October 6–7, not confirmed
In its October 2 report, Hindustan Times said the India Meteorological Department forecast possible isolated to scattered rain in Delhi and nearby areas on October 6–7 under an active western disturbance. This was the forecast available at publication; it does not establish whether rain later occurred or what effect it had on air quality.
Expert warns seasonal conditions may change
Jinitha Varghese, program manager at EnviroCatalysts, attributed the relatively clean air in preceding weeks to lingering monsoon ventilation and delayed stubble-burning activity in Punjab and Haryana. She also warned that dispersion could decline as harvest and festival activity advance. Her assessment is a forecast-like view, not a measured finding that those factors caused a particular AQI change or that a specific outcome is certain.
