Twelve children aged 13 to 15 were taken to hospital after falling ill at a swimming pool in Yerawada, Pune, on September 30, 2026, according to later reports. All were treated, observed and discharged, but the cause of the suspected chlorine leak and responsibility for pool maintenance remain under investigation.
What happened at the Yerawada pool
The incident occurred at the swimming pool of the Government Regional Sports Complex, a public facility in Yerawada belonging to the state sports department. Reports place it on Wednesday night, September 30, 2026, but differ slightly on the approximate time: Hindustan Times reported about 8:30 p.m., while The Indian Express said around 9 p.m. Hindustan Times; The Indian Express.
Children reportedly experienced burning eyes, coughing, difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting. They were taken to Sahyadri Hospitals in Shastri Nagar. The later accounts say all 12 were stable, recovered after treatment and observation, and were discharged, attributing that outcome to hospital officials. Hindustan Times; Pune Pulse.
Why reports give different hospitalisation counts
The Indian Express reported on October 1 that 10 children aged 13 to 15 had been hospitalised. Hindustan Times and Pune Pulse reported 12 on October 2. The available reports do not explain the difference, so the later count is 12 while the earlier account remains 10. These are attributed reports of this incident, not independent estimates. What is known about the suspected leak
Yerawada police were questioning stakeholders and examining chlorine handling and storage, facility maintenance, safety procedures and possible lapses. Senior Inspector Umesh Ambadas Gitte described a pipeline connected to the chlorine supply tank as the preliminary suspected failure point. Hindustan Times quoted him saying, “The swimming pool is a public facility and belongs to the sports department. The leakage was from the chlorine supply tank.” That account does not establish a final cause: the inquiry was reported as ongoing, and no finding of negligence was reported. What the pool operator said—and what remains unresolved
Hindustan Times identified Champion Sports as the complex operator. Its representative, Satish Naghe, said the children had been taken to hospital and recovered, described a machinery issue requiring urgent repairs, and asserted that the operator followed safety protocols: “There is no compromise in the services at the pool and all SOPs and safety protocols are being followed by us.” This is the operator’s position, not an independent verification of compliance. Pudhari reported a dispute about who was responsible for pool maintenance and repair. That dispute does not settle who held responsibility, whether any safety requirement was breached, or whether a lapse caused the incident. Pudhari.
