A document scanner app turns a page into a cleaned-up digital file; OCR (optical character recognition) identifies text in that file. The two jobs often come together: scanner apps may create searchable PDFs with OCR, while OCR tools can process scans or images captured elsewhere. Choose by the result you need—an image or PDF, searchable text, or text you can edit—not by the app’s label alone.
What does a document scanner app do?
A scanner app uses a phone camera to capture paper and prepare the page for digital use. Depending on the app, preparation can include detecting page edges, cropping or rotating, applying filters, cleaning up the image, and combining several pages into one document.
For example, Google Drive’s mobile app lets you capture receipts, letters, and statements, adjust pages, and save scans. Its Android instructions specify PDF or JPG output, and Google describes mobile scans as searchable PDFs. The web version of Drive does not provide the mobile scanning feature. Google Drive’s Android scanning guide and Drive’s scanning overview explain the workflow. Google also documents scanning in its iOS app, but the cited iOS instructions do not establish that its export choices match Android’s. Google Drive’s iOS instructions
What does OCR do?
OCR analyzes an image or document and recognizes its printed or handwritten text. Microsoft describes OCR as extracting text from images and documents; in the SharePoint service covered by its documentation, extracted text can be indexed for search. That is a description of a particular Microsoft service, not a guarantee about every OCR app. Microsoft’s OCR overview

OCR is not the same as scanning: it does not have to capture the page, correct its edges, or arrange a multipage document. An OCR tool can work on a scan or image made by another app. Conversely, a scanner app can include OCR as one step in its capture-and-save workflow.
How do searchable PDFs and editable text differ?
A searchable PDF lets you look for recognized words in the document. Depending on the app and PDF reader, you may also be able to select, highlight, or copy that text. The page remains a PDF, and OCR does not necessarily recreate its layout as text you can freely revise.

An editable document aims to make recognized text—and sometimes its layout—available for changes. Adobe describes recognizing text to make a PDF searchable and editable, while Microsoft Lens documents a Word output workflow for editing text and layout. Recognition quality and the result depend on the app and the source page. Adobe’s paper-to-PDF and OCR guide and Microsoft Lens for Android guide
Where do the jobs overlap?
Many products combine capture and recognition, so “scanner app” and “OCR app” are not mutually exclusive categories. Google Drive describes its mobile scans as searchable PDFs. Adobe describes Scan as producing searchable PDFs and providing text recognition. Microsoft Lens documents OCR when saving a capture to Word, as well as searchable PDF output. OneDrive is another example of OCR being applied to an existing scanned PDF: Microsoft says its mobile apps can recognize text so it can be searched, highlighted, or copied, and notes that the feature is rolling out. Availability may therefore vary. Microsoft’s OneDrive OCR guide
Which workflow fits your task?
| What you need | Look for | Example or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Capture paper with a phone | Camera capture, page-edge correction, crop and rotate, cleanup, and multipage handling | Google Drive documents these steps on Android; its web version lacks mobile scanning. |
| Keep a visual record | Image or PDF export, plus a convenient save location | Google Drive’s Android guide specifies PDF or JPG output. |
| Find words in a scan | OCR and a searchable PDF, or an OCR feature that works on an existing PDF | Google Drive and Microsoft Lens document searchable PDF workflows; OneDrive’s mobile OCR feature is rolling out. |
| Reuse or revise text | Selectable or copyable text, or an editable document export such as Word | Microsoft Lens documents saving to Word for OCR and text/layout editing. Results depend on the capture and recognition. |

How can you copy text from a scanned document?
First check whether the scan has OCR: try searching for a word in the PDF or selecting a line of text. If the text is selectable, copy it using your PDF reader’s usual selection and copy controls. If it is not, use an OCR feature on the scan or PDF, then check the recognized text before relying on it. For instance, Microsoft documents copying recognized text from Lens PDF output in a PDF reader; its OneDrive guide also describes searching, highlighting, and copying OCR text, with availability subject to rollout. What should you know about accuracy and availability?
The product documentation cited here describes features and workflows, not a controlled comparison of OCR accuracy across apps. It does not establish that one app is best for handwriting, languages, or difficult pages. If recognition matters, try representative pages in the language and conditions you expect to encounter, then inspect the output for errors.

Microsoft says OneDrive mobile OCR is rolling out. Adobe’s mobile FAQ describes Scan, but it is a FAQ about Acrobat 2020 rather than a current cross-app comparison. Check the instructions for your own app and device before depending on a particular option.
