The editor is one way to work with notes, not a requirement for creating the files that make up a vault.
Why this workflow works
An Obsidian vault is a folder and its subfolders. Notes and attachments are ordinary files in that structure, so files created or collected elsewhere can live in the vault and be opened in Obsidian. That means “without writing in the editor” does not mean “without creating or organizing content.” You still need useful source files, sensible filenames and a structure that makes the material findable. The distinction is where you prepare or transform those files—not whether the vault contains notes.

The supported formats and workflows are documented in the official guides for Markdown and HTML. Do not assume that every app export or website format is compatible just because it contains text.

Prepare notes before importing
Use Markdown when you can
If your material is already in .md files, you can preserve that format and either copy the files into the vault or import them. Use clear filenames and a folder scheme that reflects how you expect to browse the material. For a collection of related notes, keep linked files together where practical and check that their names and paths match the links.
Decide what should become metadata
Before importing a large collection, decide which details belong in note properties, such as a source URL, author, or date, and which belong in the body. The Importer can move inline tags to properties and apply a template. Templates can control imported note names, properties, and content, so they are useful when source files are inconsistent or you want a repeatable shape.

Keep a copy of the source material
Work from a copy of your export or original files rather than treating the vault as the only copy. That makes it easier to retry an import with different settings or correct a template without losing the original source.

- Install and open the official Importer plugin. In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins, browse for “Importer,” install it, then enable it. Plugin interface labels can change; use Obsidian’s current Markdown import guide if your screen differs.
- Select the source. Choose the Markdown files, folder, or ZIP archive you want to bring into the vault.
- Set the import options. Use formatting standardization, inline-tag conversion, or a template only when they suit the source and your intended note structure.
- Preview the result. Inspect the sample notes and adjust the settings or template if names, properties, or content are not coming out as intended. The preview can show up to ten samples and updates when import settings or the template changes.
- Run the import, then inspect the imported notes. Check the actual notes and related attachments, links, and references rather than assuming the preview captured every dependency.
Obsidian notes that some attachments, remote items, and cross-note references may not be fully resolved until the import runs; a preview can retain a source link or show a placeholder in those cases. See Importer templates for the preview and template details.

Import HTML with realistic expectations
For saved HTML files or folders, the Importer can extract fields such as author, title, URL, and page content. HTML import settings also include an attachment size limit and a minimum image size, which can help skip small images such as icons and logos. These controls are useful for reducing clutter, but they do not guarantee a complete capture of every page.
Sites that depend on dynamic content or remote assets may not import as expected. After importing, check whether the article text is present, images or other attachments are available, and source URLs remain useful. The HTML import guide describes the available settings.

Check the vault before relying on it
- Open a sample from each imported folder and confirm that headings, lists, and links are readable.
- Follow internal links between notes; repair links that point to missing or renamed files.
- Check attachments and images, especially when the source used remote files.
- Confirm that template-generated names and properties are useful rather than merely consistent.
- Search for a few known terms to verify that the imported content is actually present in the vault.
These checks matter because importing files is not the same as validating their relationships. The files may be in place while a link, attachment, or field still needs attention.
What this approach does—and does not—avoid
It avoids composing each note in Obsidian’s editor. It does not remove the work of selecting material, preparing files, deciding how to organize it, or checking the imported result. For a small set of clean Markdown notes, direct placement may be enough. For a batch that needs consistent naming or metadata, Importer templates offer more control. For web material, HTML import can help, but source-page variability makes a post-import check essential.
