Use Obsidian’s built-in Templates plugin when your notes need reusable Markdown plus simple title, date, or time values. Choose Templater when the template must calculate values, call functions, fetch or transform data, or run JavaScript—and only when you are willing to review and maintain executable code.
That boundary matters more than a feature-count comparison. Core Templates is a small substitution tool. Templater is a programmable template engine. The right choice depends on the automation your vault actually needs, the maintenance you can accept, and whether executing code is appropriate for your notes.

The short decision rule
Start with core Templates if a typical note consists of fixed headings and a few placeholders such as {{title}}, {{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}, or {{time}}. It is already included with Obsidian, requires no scripting language, and is designed to insert predefined snippets into the active note. Obsidian’s official description is: “Templates is a core plugin that lets you insert pre-defined snippets of text into your active note.” You can read the current guide at Obsidian Help: Templates.
Move to Templater when the note must do more than substitute those built-in values. Examples include calculated dates, conditional sections, generated links, prompts that determine content, or JavaScript that assembles text. Templater’s extra power is also the reason to treat it as code: its Community listing warns that “It can be dangerous to execute arbitrary JavaScript code or system commands from untrusted sources.”

What core Templates actually does
Reusable Markdown with a small variable set
A core template is an ordinary Markdown file stored in the folder you configure for templates. Its fixed text can contain headings, checklists, frontmatter, tables, or any other Markdown you want to reuse. When you insert it, Obsidian resolves the built-in variables documented for Templates.
{{title}} resolves to the active note’s title. {{date}} inserts the current date, while {{time}} inserts the current time. You can specify formats, for example {{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}, so a daily note can use an ISO-style date without requiring a script. The date and time formats are configurable in the Templates settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese substitutions are intentionally narrow. They are useful because they are predictable: a meeting template can contain a title, today’s date, an agenda heading, and action-item checkboxes without introducing executable logic.
How to set up a core template
- Enable the core plugin. In Obsidian’s settings, open the Core plugins area and enable Templates. Obsidian documents core plugins and their enablement in Core plugins.
- Choose the template folder. In the Templates plugin settings, select the folder that will hold your reusable Markdown templates. Keep this folder distinct from ordinary notes so it is easy to find and maintain.
- Set date and time formats. Choose the formats that match your vault’s naming convention. If you use an inline format such as
{{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}, the format travels with that placeholder; the plugin’s configured defaults apply when you use the unformatted date or time variables. - Create a Markdown file. Add the headings and placeholders you want. A simple daily-note template might contain:
# {{title}}
Date: {{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}
## Priorities
-
## Notes
## Next actions
-
- Insert it into a note. Use the Templates command from the ribbon, run the corresponding command from the command palette, or assign a custom hotkey. Obsidian inserts the selected snippet into the active note and resolves its supported variables.
The example above uses documented core syntax. It does not calculate values, query other notes, or run code; that limitation is exactly why it is easy to audit.
When the core plugin is enough
- Your structure is mostly static Markdown.
- You need the current note title, date, or time, but no calculations.
- Everyone who edits the vault should be able to understand the template without learning a programming language.
- You want the smallest maintenance surface: a folder of Markdown files and a few plugin settings.
- You are sharing templates with people who may not want a community plugin or executable code enabled.
For these cases, adding Templater would increase configuration and review work without solving a problem you have.
What Templater adds
A templating language and function results
Templater uses its own expression syntax, including <% ... %> blocks, to evaluate variables and function results while a template is rendered. Its project documentation demonstrates generated creation and modification dates, the current file title, links to previous and next dates, and a quote obtained from the web. The documentation and examples are available at the Templater project site.

A simplified example of the kind of expression it supports looks like this:
# <% tp.file.title %>
Created: <% tp.file.creation_date("YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm") %>
Modified: <% tp.file.last_modified_date("YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm") %>
Previous: <% tp.date.now("YYYY-MM-DD", -1) %>
Next: <% tp.date.now("YYYY-MM-DD", 1) %>
The exact available functions, settings, and trigger behavior can change, so use the current project documentation when you build a real template. The important distinction is architectural: Templater evaluates expressions and functions instead of merely replacing the three built-in core variables.
JavaScript-driven generation
Templater can execute JavaScript, which makes it possible to generate content procedurally. A script could choose one of several sections, transform a value, or combine data before inserting the result. That is the point at which a template becomes a small program. Treat it like one: keep it short, document why it exists, and review changes before sharing the vault.
Do not infer that every Templater template is unsafe. The documented issue is that the plugin permits arbitrary JavaScript and system commands. A static Templater template that only uses known functions has a different practical risk profile from a script copied from an unknown forum post, but both run inside a plugin capable of execution.
When Templater earns its complexity
- A date must be calculated relative to another date, such as the previous or next planning day.
- The template needs conditional output, such as a different checklist for different note types.
- You want to ask for input and use the answer in several places.
- Values must be transformed or assembled rather than copied literally.
- The workflow includes a script or function that cannot be represented by title, date, and time substitution.
If none of those requirements exists, keep the simpler core template. More syntax is not an improvement by itself.
Security and trust: the deciding difference for scripted templates
The Templater Community listing includes a direct warning: “It can be dangerous to execute arbitrary JavaScript code or system commands from untrusted sources.” Read that warning in context at the Templater Community listing.
Before enabling or importing a scripted template, use this review checklist:

- Prefer templates written by you or by a source you trust, and keep a copy of the last known-good version.
- Review changes when a shared template is updated. A later edit can introduce behavior that was not present originally.
- Keep the core Templates plugin for simple notes so that ordinary workflows do not depend on executable code.
Core Templates remains the conservative option when your primary concern is minimizing execution capability. The documentation cited for the core plugin describes substitution and insertion, not arbitrary system-command execution.
Three common workflows and the better fit
1. Daily notes with a date and fixed sections
Use core Templates. Create a daily-note Markdown file with a title, an ISO date, and headings such as Priorities, Notes, and Next actions. Insert it from the command palette or a hotkey. The built-in variables cover the changing values, while the rest remains readable Markdown.
Templater would be justified only if the daily note also needs computed links, conditional sections, or another dynamic operation. Otherwise, its scripting capability adds review obligations without adding a required result.
2. Meeting notes with a predictable structure
Use core Templates when each meeting note has the same agenda, attendees, decisions, and action-item sections. Include {{title}} and {{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}, then fill in the meeting-specific details manually.
Choose Templater if your meeting workflow needs logic—for example, selecting a different block based on a project value or generating date relationships. Keep the dynamic portion small and leave the stable headings as ordinary Markdown so the note remains understandable even if the script later needs repair.

Choose Templater when the calculation is central to the workflow. The project’s example shows the kind of automation involved: creation and modification dates, previous and next date links, title insertion, and a web-derived quote. This is no longer just a reusable snippet; it is a rendering process that evaluates functions.
Document the expected output beside the template, especially when another person will maintain it. If a calculated result is wrong, the maintainer needs to know whether the problem is the source value, the date format, or the expression itself.

A practical decision framework
Answer these questions in order. The first “yes” often determines the tool.
- Can fixed Markdown plus title, date, and time placeholders produce the note? If yes, use core Templates.
- Must the template calculate, branch, prompt, fetch, or transform data? If yes, evaluate Templater.
- Can the requirement be redesigned as a manual step? If yes, compare the saved effort with the cost of adding code and maintenance.
- Are you prepared to review executable code? If no, do not use Templater scripting; stay with core Templates or a non-executable design.
- Will the vault be shared across devices or people? Check the current plugin listing and documentation for the exact compatibility and setup requirements before standardizing the workflow.
This framework deliberately treats maintenance and trust as first-class requirements. A dynamic template that nobody can safely edit is not an automation success.
Using both plugins without duplicating work
You do not have to make the entire vault a core-Templates vault or a Templater vault. Use core Templates for stable, low-risk note types and reserve Templater for the few workflows that need computation. That division keeps simple notes easy to inspect while isolating code-dependent behavior.
Keep the two syntaxes visually distinct during migration. Core placeholders use double curly braces, such as {{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}. Templater expressions use its angle-bracket form, such as <% ... %>. Mixing them accidentally can leave literal text in a note or cause you to invoke the wrong command. Convert one template at a time, insert it into a disposable test note, and verify the rendered output before replacing the original.
A safe migration sequence
- Inventory the existing templates and mark which ones need only fixed text and built-in variables.
- Leave those simple files in the core template folder and confirm they insert correctly.
- For a dynamic file, copy it before changing syntax so the original remains a fallback.
- Rewrite only the dynamic portions using Templater expressions, keeping headings and explanatory text unchanged.
- Test with representative note titles and dates, including edge cases relevant to your workflow.
- Record the required plugin and any assumptions in the template itself or in your vault documentation.
Invocation, automation, and the Obsidian CLI
Core template insertion can be started from the ribbon, command palette, or a custom hotkey. Obsidian also documents template-related CLI operations for listing templates, reading them, inserting them, and resolving supported variables. The current command names and syntax belong to the Obsidian CLI documentation; check that page when you are automating outside the graphical interface rather than relying on a remembered command.
Templater’s invocation depends on its community-plugin commands and your configured automation. Because those details can change with releases and settings, consult the current Templater documentation for the intended trigger. Do not assume that a command or automatic behavior described in an old tutorial still matches your installation.

The Templater Community listing showed version 2.26.0, compatibility with Obsidian 1.13.0 and later, and desktop and mobile availability when accessed on October 13, 2026. Those are time-bound listing details, not a permanent guarantee. Check the current listing before publishing a shared vault standard or troubleshooting a device.
Best Value
Availability on a platform does not prove that every template behaves identically there. A template that relies on JavaScript or system commands deserves a device-specific check, and any feature that depends on a particular plugin version should be documented with that dependency.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The placeholders remain visible
- Confirm that you inserted the file through the Templates command rather than opening the Markdown file and copying its text manually.
- Check that the Templates core plugin is enabled and that the file is in the configured template folder.
- Verify the spelling and punctuation of the variable. Core syntax uses forms such as
{{title}}and{{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}; it is not interchangeable with Templater’s<% ... %>syntax.
The date format is wrong
- Check the format configured for the core Templates plugin.
- If the template specifies an inline format, inspect the text after the colon, such as
{{date:YYYY-MM-DD}}. - For Templater, inspect the function and format string in the expression and compare it with the current project documentation.
A Templater template fails or produces unexpected output
- Reduce the template to the smallest expression that fails, then add the other blocks back one at a time.
- Check delimiters around each expression and verify that the functions you use are documented for your installed version.
- Review any JavaScript before running it again. A failure is a reason to inspect the code, not to paste a replacement from an unknown source.
- Keep a known-good copy so you can restore the note structure while debugging the dynamic section.
A shared vault behaves differently on another device
Confirm the Obsidian and Templater versions, whether the relevant plugin is enabled, and whether the template depends on desktop-only behavior or commands. The listing’s compatibility statement is useful for a starting check, but it does not establish that every script or workflow is equivalent across devices.
How to document your choice
For each template, record three facts: which plugin renders it, which variables or functions it uses, and whether it executes JavaScript or system commands. This small inventory prevents a future editor from “simplifying” a Templater expression into literal text or from adding executable code to a note that was intentionally kept within core Templates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also record the expected result in plain language. “Creates a daily note with the current title and ISO date” describes a core template clearly. “Calculates adjacent planning dates and inserts a fetched quote” signals that the file is dynamic and needs a code-aware maintainer.
Final choice
For most reusable note structures, install nothing extra: enable core Templates, configure its folder and formats, and use its title/date/time substitutions. It solves the common case with less syntax and less maintenance.
Use Templater deliberately for requirements that genuinely need functions or JavaScript. Before adopting it, read the current documentation, review every script, and confirm that the people and devices using the vault can support the resulting workflow. The best automation is not the one with the most features; it is the least powerful tool that fully meets the note’s requirements without creating an avoidable maintenance or trust problem.
