Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If OBS started reporting “Encoding overloaded” after a Windows graphics-driver update, the timing makes the driver worth checking—but it does not prove the update caused the problem. First save a log from the affected session and check OBS Statistics to distinguish encoding or rendering lag from network dropped frames. Then reduce GPU contention, test relevant Windows settings, and consider rolling back the driver if the symptom began immediately after the update.
What “Encoding overloaded” means—and what it does not
The warning means OBS is not completing encoding work quickly enough to keep up with the stream. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: it does not identify the graphics driver as the cause. OBS can also use the GPU to render and composite scenes even when you encode with the CPU, so GPU contention may contribute to a warning that sounds like an encoder-only problem. OBS lists GPU overload and resource constraints among common causes in its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.

Keep network trouble separate. In OBS Statistics, “Dropped Frames (Network)” points to a connection that is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate; it is not the same as rendering lag or “Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag.” OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide covers that network branch. A driver rollback or lower encoder workload is not the right first response to network-only drops.
Capture a useful baseline before changing settings
Preserve the log from the session with the problem before restarting or changing several settings. Record the details below so you can compare results and, if needed, give a useful report to OBS or the device manufacturer.

Use OBS Statistics to choose the right fix
If rendering lag or encoding lag is increasing
Start with the reversible workload checks below. Rendering lag suggests OBS is struggling to render frames; skipped frames due to encoding lag means encoding cannot keep pace. Either can occur alongside the other. Use the OBS log and Statistics values to see whether a change improves the relevant counter rather than relying only on whether the warning disappears.
If network-dropped frames are increasing instead
Follow the connection troubleshooting path: investigate whether the internet connection can sustain the configured bitrate and whether it is stable. Do not treat a network-only problem as proof of a graphics-driver fault.

Reduce GPU contention before changing the driver
OBS recommends starting with system and workload checks. These changes are generally easier to reverse than a driver change, and can reveal whether OBS is competing with another process for GPU time.
- Run OBS as administrator. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and test the same stream workload.
- Close known GPU-intensive programs. Shut down applications you recognize as using substantial GPU resources, then check OBS Statistics again. Avoid ending unfamiliar system processes.
- Limit the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync. If streaming a game, cap its frame rate at the monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync. Reduce demanding in-game graphics settings if the counters still rise.
- Simplify the OBS scene. Temporarily disable nonessential browser sources, filters, animations, or other costly scene elements. Re-enable them individually after testing to identify a contributor.
These steps follow OBS’s encoding performance guidance; they are diagnostic measures, not a guarantee that a driver update is responsible.
Lower OBS output workload if the system still falls behind
If reducing contention is not enough, test a lower output resolution or frame rate. For example, test 30 FPS if 60 FPS is unstable, then compare the OBS Statistics counters under the same workload. Reducing output resolution lowers the work required to encode the stream. Reducing the base canvas resolution is a more disruptive option because it changes the working dimensions of the scene; try output settings first and check how the result affects your intended stream quality.

Keep a note of the original settings and change one setting at a time. The right balance depends on the available hardware, scene complexity, and the quality you need; there is no single resolution or frame rate that fixes every system.
Test whether the graphics-driver update is involved
If the problem began immediately after the update and the lighter-workload tests do not resolve it, a rollback is a reasonable test. It does not prove causation: compare stability before and after the rollback under similar conditions.
- Open Device Manager in Windows.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the affected adapter, and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Follow the prompts and restart if Windows requests it. Test OBS again and compare the session statistics with your baseline.
Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Rollback requires administrator access and may be unavailable if Windows no longer has an earlier driver installed. If it is unavailable, consult the official support channel for your GPU or computer manufacturer for a compatible driver; avoid installing a package for a different adapter or system.

Check HAGS and multi-GPU assignment when relevant
Test Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
OBS identifies Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) as a possible source of performance issues and hardware-encoder failures. Treat turning it off as a troubleshooting experiment, not a universal fix:
- Open Windows Settings and go to System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings.
- Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, if the setting is available.
- Restart Windows, test OBS with the same workload, and compare its Statistics values with the baseline.
The setting’s availability can vary by hardware and Windows configuration. See the OBS HAGS guidance for context.

Check which GPU OBS uses on a laptop or multi-GPU system
If the computer has integrated and discrete GPUs, check OBS’s assignment in Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics. The appropriate GPU can depend on how you capture: OBS’s GPU Selection Guide distinguishes game or window capture from display capture. Do not assume that a laptop-specific GPU assignment is the right change on every desktop or for every capture method.

Review the encoder choice without assuming hardware encoding is always better
OBS supports compatible hardware encoders such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, as well as software encoding such as x264. Hardware encoding can move work away from the CPU, but the encoder options available—and whether one is suitable—depend on the GPU, driver support, generation, and current workload. A hardware encoder does not remove GPU rendering work, and a driver problem may affect hardware encoding itself.
In OBS, review the encoder in Settings → Output (switch Output Mode to Advanced if needed) and compare available choices under the same test workload. Note CPU use, OBS Statistics, and stream stability for each trial; restore the earlier choice if the alternative performs worse. OBS explains the compatibility considerations in its Hardware Encoding guide.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag | Encoder workload, resolution/FPS, and the OBS log | Reduce output workload; compare a compatible encoder option under the same conditions. |
| Rendering lag | GPU contention, game frame rate, scene complexity, and GPU assignment where relevant | Run OBS as administrator, close known GPU-heavy programs, cap the game frame rate, and simplify the scene. |
| Network-dropped frames without encoding or rendering lag | Connection stability and ability to sustain the configured bitrate | Use OBS’s separate connection troubleshooting guidance. |
| Warning began directly after a driver update | Whether rollback is available and whether results change after restart | Test Device Manager rollback; if unavailable, ask the device maker for a compatible driver. |
| Hardware encoder fails or performance changes with HAGS | HAGS state and the same OBS workload before and after restart | Test HAGS off, restart, and compare with the saved baseline. |
| Problem occurs on a laptop or multi-GPU system | OBS GPU assignment and capture type | Check Windows Graphics settings and apply the OBS capture-specific GPU guidance. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than stream a live camera or gameplay session, StreamNeo is a different option from troubleshooting OBS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for prerecorded video, not going live from a camera, and StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
