Raising bitrate alone will not restore detail missing from the file or fix a stretched image.
Trace where the blur enters the stream
Compare the same moving scene at each stage: play the file locally at its native resolution, inspect it in the OBS preview, then check the YouTube stream after its playback qualities are available. The source may already be soft, OBS may be resizing or distorting it, the encoder or connection may be struggling, or YouTube playback may be showing a lower-quality rendition. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple playback formats, so the OBS preview and a viewer’s selected YouTube quality are not necessarily equivalent. 1. Check the video file and OBS source
Play the original file locally
Open the exact recording in a local player and view it at its native size. If it is low-resolution, heavily compressed, or soft in the original, OBS cannot recreate detail by increasing the stream resolution or bitrate. Note its dimensions and frame rate so you can choose output settings that make sense for the source.
Use a Media Source for a local file
In OBS, add the recording as a Media Source (Sources > + > Media Source), then choose the file in its properties. OBS documents common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. For continuous playback, enable Loop. Options such as Restart playback when source becomes active, Use hardware decoding when available (off by default), and Show nothing when playback ends affect playback behavior or decoding; they are not sharpness controls. 2. Fix stretching or unwanted scaling
Select the Media Source in the preview and inspect its transform and proportions. Preserve the file’s aspect ratio. If the source and canvas have different shapes, choose a fit or crop that suits the scene rather than stretching the image to fill the frame: OBS notes that stretching is usually the least preferable fit and can make the image blurry or malformed. Avoid enlarging a small source beyond what the output requires.
If you resize the source, compare OBS’s scale-filter options at the intended output size. OBS lists Bicubic as its default filter; no filter is a universal fix, so judge the result using the actual content. 3. Match OBS canvas, output resolution, and frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the scene workspace; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent as stream output. For example, sending a 1080p source at 720p scales it down. Confirm the output is the resolution you intend viewers to receive, and do not upscale a lower-resolution file expecting added detail. OBS’s overview says the output-scaled resolution should be the stream output resolution. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Choose a frame rate that fits the source and your system. If the file is 30 fps, 60 fps does not create extra source frames; it can also add processing load. If OBS reports rendering or encoding strain, try 30 fps or a lower output resolution rather than changing settings blindly. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps and recommends reducing resolution or frame rate when performance is the problem. OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting.

4. Set the encoder for YouTube and your connection
Use YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for the output resolution and frame rate you actually send. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a higher bitrate will fix blur. YouTube also specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1; use the bitrate row appropriate to your selected codec and output. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings.

In Settings > Output, check the streaming encoder’s rate-control mode and bitrate; set CBR and the matching recommended keyframe interval in the encoder controls. The connection needs stable upload capacity for the configured stream rate. Look for OBS dropped frames, encoding lag, or rendering lag, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test with a representative moving scene: a still frame can hide compression artifacts that become visible in motion.

5. Verify YouTube playback quality
After going live, allow YouTube to process available playback renditions, then manually select the intended quality in the player when comparing it with OBS. A stream may look softer in the browser if the player is showing a lower rendition. If a still image looks sharp but motion breaks into blocks, compression or an unstable connection may be involved; stream-health and encoder evidence are needed to distinguish causes. YouTube advises creators: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

The precise cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone. It depends on the file’s native dimensions and frame rate, OBS transforms and output settings, encoder/log data, upload conditions, and YouTube playback rendition.
