If OBS keeps disconnecting from YouTube on Windows, first check the OBS status bar and log: rising dropped frames point to the connection between your PC and YouTube’s ingest server, while an encoding overloaded warning or choppy output points to local GPU or rendering load. The fixes differ, so note the symptom and save a log from the failed session before changing settings.
First identify what is stopping
OBS distinguishes network trouble from local performance trouble. Its connection guide explains that dropped frames can mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. That does not, by itself, prove OBS is defective or that YouTube has an outage. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (published September 30, 2024) describes this connection-side symptom.

- Dropped-frames counter rises as the stream fails: start with upload stability, bitrate, Wi-Fi, network software and the route to the ingest server.
- OBS reports “Encoding overloaded,” or the output is choppy without rising dropped frames: start with GPU/rendering load, encoder capacity and scene complexity. See OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting (published June 12, 2021); its Windows-specific advice may not match every current Windows version.
- Viewers report buffering, but OBS remains connected and dropped frames are not rising: that is not the same symptom as OBS losing its server connection. Check YouTube’s current stream-health diagnostics rather than assuming the OBS connection has failed.
Before testing, record the exact OBS message, whether the dropped-frame counter increased, whether OBS stayed connected, and the time of the interruption. In OBS, use Help → Log Files → Upload Current Log File after the session containing the failure, and keep the resulting log available for diagnosis. Avoid changing several settings at once; otherwise, it is harder to tell what affected the result.
If OBS shows dropped frames: test bitrate and connection
Lower the video bitrate
Open Settings → Output in OBS and reduce the video bitrate, then test a stream under the same conditions. OBS’s connection guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting rule of thumb, not a guarantee. The upload capacity that matters is what remains stable while streaming, not just a best-case speed-test result. A lower bitrate can help a constrained or fluctuating connection, but it also reduces image quality.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Test another ingest server or service
Open Settings → Stream and, if the service offers server choices, try a different ingest server. This is an isolation test: if the result changes, the route to the original server may be involved, but the test alone does not identify a faulty component. Testing another service can help distinguish a service-specific route problem from a broader connection issue; it does not repair the route to YouTube.
Try OBS’s Windows network options one at a time
In Settings → Advanced → Network, test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. OBS notes that some users report improvement and that these options add detail to logs; neither is a guaranteed fix. Leave Bind to IP at Default. You can test IPv4-only, but if it makes no difference, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a trade-off
OBS’s Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. OBS explicitly cautions that it does not fix the underlying cause and that reduced bitrate means reduced picture quality. Treat it as a way to mitigate interruptions, not as a substitute for finding the connection problem.

Rule out VPNs and security interference safely
- If a VPN is active, test one stream without it. If the disconnections stop, investigate the VPN route or configuration.
- If firewall or antivirus software appears to interfere, use only a temporary diagnostic test. If that confirms the cause, add an OBS exception and turn protection back on; do not leave security software disabled.
Check network-prioritization utilities and drivers
Network “optimization” software can affect streaming traffic. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC Software Suite as examples, not an exhaustive list. Test by disabling the relevant prioritization option; for Killer software, OBS recommends reinstalling with hardware drivers only. Update network drivers through the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s site.
Test Wi-Fi, router and hardware methodically
- If you are on Wi-Fi, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and test again. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming; a wired test helps isolate that variable.
- If appropriate, restart the modem and router, then repeat the same stream test.
- Replace a cable, router, network card, switch or extender only if testing points to that component. OBS does not require a particular cable category as a general fix.
- If the problem persists after local tests, contact your ISP and provide the times and symptoms of the interruptions.
Buying new hardware before isolating the cause can add cost without fixing the connection route, software conflict or upload instability that triggered the disconnections.

If OBS reports encoding overload or local choppiness
OBS renders and composites scenes on the GPU. A game and other GPU work can leave too little capacity for OBS even when the internet connection is sound. Its performance guide recommends reducing competing GPU load and, on Windows, trying to run OBS as administrator.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Run OBS as administrator: close OBS, right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator, then test again.
- Free GPU capacity: close or reduce other GPU-heavy work. If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and reduce the game’s graphics settings.
- Lower the stream workload: reduce output resolution or frame rate in OBS. If 60 fps is not working reliably, test 30 fps.
- Simplify the scene: temporarily disable complex sources, resource-heavy filters and browser sources one at a time. Test between changes to identify the source of the load.
OBS’s encoding guide also discusses Windows Game Mode and Game DVR, but includes version-specific Windows 10 advice. Check your Windows version and current settings before changing those features rather than applying old version-specific directions universally.

When the cause is still unclear
Keep the log from a session that includes the interruption, along with the exact on-screen error and the observations recorded before testing. Note whether Ethernet, a lower bitrate, another ingest server or a different streaming service changed the result. Those comparisons can narrow the cause, but they do not by themselves establish whether a particular account, stream key, YouTube Live Control Room setting or ingest condition is responsible.
The OBS connection symptom alone is not evidence of a YouTube-wide outage or an account restriction. Check YouTube’s current stream-health diagnostics and official guidance for YouTube-specific errors; do not infer those conditions from dropped frames alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your stream is a recording or playlist rather than a live camera or interactive OBS production, StreamNeo is a different way to keep a YouTube channel live: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is not an OBS repair and does not stream a live camera.
