OBS YouTube Stream Drops Frames While Recording: How to Fix It

When OBS drops frames during a YouTube stream and local recording, the right fix depends on whether Stats shows network, rendering or encoding trouble.

If OBS starts dropping frames when you begin recording and streaming together, check View > Stats and identify which counter rises: network-dropped frames, frames missed due to rendering lag, or frames skipped due to encoding lag. They point to different problems, so there is no single bitrate or encoder setting that fixes every case. Use the matching steps below, then test again with the same workload that triggered the problem.

First identify what kind of frames OBS is losing

Open View > Stats while streaming and recording. Note which counter increases, when it starts, and whether starting the recording triggers it. Also record your stream resolution, frame rate and bitrate, plus the recording encoder and quality settings. OBS separates connection trouble from performance trouble; without your Stats and log, hardware and network details, the exact cause cannot be determined.

  • Dropped frames (network): OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest server at the configured bitrate. Investigate upload capacity and the network path.
  • Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS cannot render or composite frames on time. GPU load or a system bottleneck is a likely direction to investigate.
  • Frames skipped due to encoding lag / “encoding overloaded”: The encoder cannot finish frames in time. Reduce encoding workload or use a suitable hardware encoder if your system supports one.

These are distinct symptoms. Lowering stream bitrate is relevant to network drops, but it will not necessarily fix rendering or encoding lag.

Fix rendering lag by freeing GPU and scene capacity

Reduce competing GPU load

If rendering lag rises, cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, lower demanding graphics settings, and close other GPU-heavy programs. OBS lists running as administrator as a quick fix for GPU overload on Windows; it is not a general remedy for every operating system or bottleneck.

Reduce the work OBS must render

Temporarily simplify the scene to isolate expensive sources. Remove or disable demanding filters, reduce or resize browser sources, and avoid unnecessarily high-resolution media. Test with the scenes and sources you actually need, because a simplified test scene may hide the cause.

Lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce rendering and encoding load. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is failing. This can make motion less smooth or the image less detailed, so change one setting at a time and compare the result. Keep the base canvas unchanged unless resources are severely constrained: changing it can require repositioning sources.

Fix encoding overload while recording and streaming

Check both outputs, not just the stream

When the problem begins only after recording starts, inspect the stream and recording encoders and their workloads. Recording and streaming simultaneously adds work; a demanding recording quality or preset can push the system past its available capacity. Lower the recording workload or stream output workload, then repeat the test. If possible, change one output at a time so you can see which change helps.

Choose an encoder your system can sustain

OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it can move encoding work from the CPU to specialized components in the GPU. Availability depends on the operating system and hardware, and older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality. Do not assume a particular encoder, such as NVENC, is available or that switching to it will fix rendering lag if the GPU itself is saturated.

For recording, OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide (dated November 30, 2023) recommends Simple output mode for ease of use. Its Advanced-mode baseline values are encoder-specific, not universal performance fixes:

  • NVENC: Constant QP 16–23, P5, High Quality tuning, two-pass quarter-resolution multipass, and look-ahead off.
  • x264: CRF 16–23 and the “veryfast” CPU preset.
  • AMD: CQP 16–23 and Quality preset.

In that guide, lower quality-number settings increase quality and file size. If your current setup overloads the machine, prioritize stable output over a higher-quality baseline. The best setting depends on your encoder, hardware, desired recording quality and available capacity.

Fix network-dropped frames

Check upload capacity and stream bitrate

If the network-dropped counter rises, check that your connection can reliably sustain the configured stream bitrate and reduce the bitrate if needed. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee: upload performance can vary, and other traffic competes for capacity. YouTube likewise advises choosing a reliable quality for the connection and testing before going live.

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions to choose values appropriate to your codec, resolution and frame rate. Its guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; CBR; AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The bitrate recommendations vary by format, so consult the current table rather than applying one number to every stream.

Check the route between your computer and YouTube

If you stream over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming,” and recommends a wired connection. A cable is worth considering only if network drops are the symptom and Wi-Fi or a suspect wired link is implicated; it will not fix rendering or encoding lag.

OBS also identifies VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, router or modem problems, and faulty cables or devices as possible causes. Test changes methodically and restore any security protection you disable for diagnosis. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality to adapt to changing network conditions, but it is a fallback rather than a fix for the underlying connection problem.

Test the settings under the load that caused the problem

  1. Make one targeted change based on the OBS counter that rises.
  2. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with the game or workload, scene collection, stream bitrate and recording mode that normally trigger the issue.
  3. Include audio and movement in the test. YouTube recommends testing with conditions resembling the planned live stream.
  4. Watch OBS Stats and YouTube stream health during the test. Note whether the same counter still rises and whether the recording is acceptable in quality and file size.
  5. If the issue remains, review the OBS log and repeat with one change at a time. The useful comparison is the same workload before and after the setting change.

Choose changes by symptom and trade-off

OBS symptom First area to change Main trade-off
Network-dropped frames Stable upload, stream bitrate and network path Lower bitrate can reduce stream image quality.
Rendering lag GPU load, scene complexity, output resolution or frame rate Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce detail or smoothness.
Encoding lag Stream and recording encoder workload, preset or suitable hardware encoding Lower encoder quality may reduce output quality; recording settings also affect file size.

OBS and YouTube guidance cannot identify the bottleneck on your individual computer without its log, Stats counters, output configuration, hardware, operating system and network measurements.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video live on YouTube rather than stream a camera or live gameplay, StreamNeo can run the playback from the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
