If an OBS-powered YouTube stream fails after hours, first determine what actually stopped: OBS may have crashed, the stream may have disconnected while OBS stayed open, or the computer may have slowed or frozen. Those symptoms point to different causes. Save the session log and any crash log before changing settings, then use the evidence to isolate software, performance, or network problems.
First identify what “crashed” means
At the next failure, note the time and what you saw. Did the OBS process disappear, did only the YouTube stream stop, did the picture freeze, or did the whole computer become unresponsive? These are not interchangeable diagnoses.

Save the logs before troubleshooting
Preserve the evidence from the affected session before changing several settings at once. OBS’s crash guidance identifies logs as the primary artifact for investigating a suspected crash.

- Check for a crash log as well, using the latest one associated with the failure.
- Record the exact failure time, OBS version, operating-system version, GPU and driver version, and any plugins or scripts in use.
- Note whether the stream was started as a new broadcast or connected to an existing scheduled YouTube broadcast.
Keep the original logs unchanged. When reporting a suspected OBS fault, include the system details and logs rather than relying on a description such as “it crashed after a few hours.” See OBS Studio crashes on launch or during a session.

If OBS itself closed
Read the crash log alongside the regular log
Look at the crash log and the final entries in the regular session log for clues about the source, plugin, driver, or subsystem involved. A crash log is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof that the last-named component caused the failure.
Test a clean setup
Use Safe Mode where available, or test with a new profile and scene collection. If the clean setup behaves differently, reintroduce third-party plugins, scripts, browser sources, filters, and scene elements gradually. Change one group at a time so you can tell which change affects the result.

A report opened May 28, 2026 describes memory and CPU rising, lower FPS, and eventual system unresponsiveness with a complex scene on Debian Trixie and OBS 32.1.2. That is one user’s report, not a diagnosis for other systems: Memory/CPU climb and crash after 20 mins.
If memory or CPU climbs while OBS remains open
Track memory, CPU, and performance over time, including when the rise begins and which scene and sources are active. A steady increase is a useful clue, but the reviewed guidance does not establish a general memory threshold or show that this symptom is always an OBS memory leak.

- Compare resource use with the active scene and sources; test browser and media sources individually.
- Reduce scene complexity and remove nonessential filters or sources for a controlled long-session test.
- When performance logs point to resource pressure, simplify output settings and leave resources available to OBS. Lowering canvas resolution is one configuration change to test, not a guaranteed crash fix.
Follow OBS’s guidance on encoding performance troubleshooting. Avoid treating “buy more RAM” as the diagnosis unless the evidence on your system supports it.
If OBS stayed open but YouTube disconnected
Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to the connection between your computer and the remote ingest server, not necessarily an OBS process crash. OBS Project describes this distinction in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024.

- Check whether your upload connection remains stable throughout the stream.
- Confirm the selected bitrate is sustainable on that connection.
- Where available, try another ingest server and compare the session logs.
- Check whether a VPN or security software is interfering with the connection.
Make one change at a time and keep the session log for comparison. A disconnected stream with OBS still running calls for network-path troubleshooting; it does not establish that OBS crashed.

If the failure takes several hours to appear, a short successful stream does not show that the issue is resolved. Reproduce the same workload—scenes, sources, output settings, and broadcast setup—and watch resource trends and logs for at least as long as the usual time to failure. If the problem recurs, preserve the new logs and system details rather than changing multiple variables at once.
