What is the difference between OBS and StreamYard?
OBS Studio is free, open-source desktop software for video recording and live streaming. It also provides audio mixing and filters, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode, Multiview, and plugin and script extensibility. StreamYard’s Help Center lists simultaneous destination limits of three on Core, eight on Advanced, and ten on Business. These plan limits can change; consult the current multistreaming help page and verify destination compatibility before selecting a plan. A destination limit is not a promise that every platform or account can be connected in every configuration.

OBS supports streaming platforms, but the retrieved OBS product information does not state a native multistream destination count. Do not assume that general platform support means simultaneous multistreaming is built in. If you need several destinations from one production, verify the workflow and any additional services or setup you would rely on before committing.
Recording: local files, limits, and workflow
OBS includes recording as a core use case, which suits creators who want a desktop production and recording workflow. StreamYard offers recording, but its free plan has recording limits; paid plan details determine access to features such as broadcast recordings and local recordings. What computer and internet connection do you need?
OBS Studio
The OBS Project lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux on its current product page. Its separate system-requirements page lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and an X window system or Wayland. That requirements page dates to 2021, so check it against the release you plan to install. OBS cautions that a compatible system does not guarantee the computer can stream or record successfully. CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; OBS recommends trying its Auto Configuration Wizard. See the OBS system requirements.
StreamYard
StreamYard recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, using Ethernet when possible, a modern quad-core processor, and at least 4 GB of RAM, with 6–8 GB recommended. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee for every production or resolution. Its requirements page also notes browser-specific feature limitations. Check the current StreamYard system requirements and test your actual browser, network, camera, and production setup.

How to decide without guessing
- List the parts of your show. If you need detailed scene composition, several kinds of sources, audio filters, or plugins, begin with OBS. If guest participation and a browser studio are central, evaluate StreamYard first.
- Write down your destinations. Confirm that each service and plan supports the platforms and simultaneous workflow you need. For StreamYard, check its current destination limits and compatibility; do not infer a native multistream count for OBS from general platform support.
- Check recording requirements. Decide whether you need local files, cloud recordings, particular recording limits, or a separate editing workflow. Match those needs to OBS’s desktop recording workflow or StreamYard’s current plan features.
- Test your actual setup before a scheduled show. For OBS, use the Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point and test the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, scenes, and audio. For StreamYard, test in the intended browser and network conditions. A compatibility list or speed recommendation alone cannot guarantee a successful broadcast.
- Compare ongoing costs and constraints. OBS has no software subscription price. For StreamYard, verify the live plan price, renewal terms, destination cap, and recording limits that apply to your account.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS and StreamYard are production tools for live shows; if your goal is instead to keep a prerecorded YouTube video or playlist live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-based live studio. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
