For a fixed playlist you want to repeat on YouTube Live, OBS Studio with its VLC Video source is usually the easier choice. It gives you a visual playlist and a Loop Playlist control. FFmpeg is better suited to scripted workflows, provided the files meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements. Neither method, by itself, schedules a particular clip to start at a chosen clock time: that takes a separate automation layer.
Playlist rotation and broadcast scheduling are different jobs
“Playlist rotation” usually means playing videos in sequence, optionally repeating or shuffling them. Scheduling a YouTube Live broadcast means arranging the event in YouTube Studio, with a start time and an upcoming watch page. Choosing which clip begins at a particular time within an ongoing broadcast is a third task.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a broadcast as “an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens.” The broadcast is separate from the stream resource that carries audio and video. YouTube’s scheduling controls do not select or rotate local playlist items; OBS or FFmpeg handles playback, while YouTube handles the event and ingest connection. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

| What matters | OBS Studio + VLC Video source | FFmpeg concat demuxer |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist setup | Add a VLC Video source and manage its media items through OBS’s interface. | Write a text list of files and pass it to FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. |
| Repeat and order | Loop Playlist repeats the list; Shuffle is a separate control. Leave Shuffle off for a fixed order. | The demuxer sequences the list. Long-running repetition requires additional command-line workflow. |
| Compatibility requirements | Install VLC, matching OBS’s architecture; OBS recommends 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. | Input files need matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Incorrect duration metadata can lead to artifacts or gaps. |
| Best fit | Operators who want a graphical setup and visible source controls. | Operators comfortable preparing compatible media and scripting a command-line pipeline. |
| Clip-at-a-time scheduling | The documented playlist controls do not provide a clip-by-clock-time scheduler. | The concat demuxer sequences a list; it does not, on its own, schedule a particular clip for a wall-clock time. |
| YouTube event and connection | Configure the broadcast in YouTube, then connect OBS with the server URL and stream key or an available YouTube connection option. | Configure the broadcast in YouTube, then send FFmpeg output to the correct ingest endpoint with the stream key. |
These are workflow differences, not a head-to-head performance or reliability test. Official documentation describes the features and constraints, but does not establish that either setup is more reliable or performs better in a particular channel’s conditions.

Set up a repeating playlist in OBS
Prepare OBS and VLC
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match their architectures: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, open the scene that should carry the broadcast. Add a VLC Video source rather than an ordinary Media Source when you need multiple files in a playlist.
- Open the VLC source’s properties and add the video files in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence. Keep Shuffle off if the order matters.
- Preview the scene and confirm that the videos play and advance as expected before connecting the live broadcast.
An ordinary OBS Media Source is appropriate for one repeating file: add the source and enable its Loop option. OBS documents the Media Source and VLC playlist controls in its Media Sources guide.
Connect the OBS output to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live broadcast and follow the current Live Control Room workflow.
- Use the server URL and stream key provided for the broadcast in OBS’s streaming setup, or use a YouTube connection option if it is available in your encoder workflow.
- Start streaming from OBS when you are ready. Confirm the incoming preview and broadcast status in YouTube Studio before the event goes public or begins at its scheduled time.
YouTube’s interface labels may change, so follow its current instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder. A scheduled broadcast does not automatically make OBS start at the scheduled time, nor does it change the local playlist settings.

Build a playlist rotation with FFmpeg
Use the concat demuxer when files are compatible
The concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and sequences their packets as if they had been muxed together. It is useful when you want to avoid re-encoding, but it has stricter input requirements than simply putting unrelated videos in a list.
- Create a text file such as
playlist.txt, with one file entry per line. For example:file '/media/part-1.mp4'
file '/media/part-2.mp4'
file '/media/part-3.mp4' - Check that the files have the same stream layout, codecs, and time bases. Confirm that their duration metadata is accurate; incorrect durations can produce artifacts or gaps. The concat demuxer documentation describes duration directives for cases where duration metadata needs to be supplied or corrected.
- Invoke FFmpeg with the concat demuxer input and the appropriate YouTube output settings for your broadcast. FFmpeg options apply to the input or output that follows them, so keep input options before the relevant input and output options before the output destination.
- Use the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup as the ingest destination and authentication details. Verify the command’s output and YouTube Studio’s incoming preview before relying on the stream.
The exact output options depend on the source media and the ingest protocol you choose. The official FFmpeg documentation explains the command pipeline and option ordering; YouTube’s encoder instructions explain its connection details. These mechanisms do not establish uninterrupted operation for a particular command or host.

When the concat demuxer is the wrong fit
If your clips differ materially and need normalization or re-encoding, FFmpeg’s FAQ points to the concat filter rather than the concat demuxer. The filter offers a way to combine media that requires processing, but it adds a more involved filtering and encoding workflow. Consult the FFmpeg FAQ and the filter documentation for the appropriate configuration; do not assume incompatible files can be joined cleanly by changing only the file list.
What if a clip must start at a specific time?
Looping a playlist and scheduling a clip are not the same feature. OBS’s documented playlist controls play, loop, or shuffle media. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer sequences a list. Neither cited feature documents a rule such as “play clip B at 3 p.m.”

For a clock-time cue, add and verify a separate scheduler or automation layer suited to your operating system and playback setup. Decide what should happen if a clip is still playing at the target time, the encoder restarts, or the computer loses connectivity; test those cases before using the schedule for a broadcast. Do not treat YouTube’s scheduled start time as a cue for a clip inside the stream.

Choose an ingest protocol separately from the playlist
RTMP and HLS are ways to send a live stream to YouTube; neither is a local playlist feature. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube also describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP. Use HLS only when your encoder and workflow meet YouTube’s stated requirements, and do not confuse its rolling ingest playlist with the video list in OBS or FFmpeg. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Troubleshoot common problems
- OBS does not show the VLC Video source or it fails to play files: check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture. Restart OBS after installing VLC and test a supported local file in the source preview.
- The OBS playlist advances but does not repeat: check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties. For a single Media Source, check its separate Loop setting.
- OBS plays clips in an unexpected order: turn off Shuffle and confirm the file order in the VLC source properties.
- FFmpeg reports concat errors or output has gaps or artifacts: compare each file’s streams, codecs, and time bases. Check duration metadata and use duration directives where appropriate. If media needs normalization or re-encoding, use the concat filter workflow instead.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that you selected the intended broadcast and copied its current server URL and stream key correctly. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the expected ingest endpoint.
- The broadcast is scheduled but the playlist does not start at the intended time: YouTube’s event schedule is separate from local playback and encoder start. Arrange and test the required computer or automation-layer start separately.
Check rights and channel policy before streaming
Having a video file does not necessarily give you the right to broadcast it. Confirm that you own or have permission to use the video, music, and other included material, including any rights needed for live streaming. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies also apply to live broadcasts; reused material may raise separate channel-policy concerns even when a stream technically works. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies before building a rotation around third-party content.
