OBS vs FFmpeg for a Nonstop YouTube Event Replay Stream

Choose OBS if your replay needs scenes, graphics, or hands-on operator control. Choose FFmpeg if you are looping a fixed file or known sequence and can manage a command-line process and its recovery. Neither is proven more reliable in a matched long-duration test: for a nonstop YouTube replay, rehearsal, monitoring, host and network stability, and a recovery plan matter more than the encoder choice.

Which one fits your replay?

Need Better fit Why
Multiple scenes, graphics, or operator changes OBS OBS provides a visual scene-and-source workflow, along with output controls and operator features such as hotkeys and automatic reconnect.
A fixed video or known media sequence played continuously FFmpeg It reads media from files, devices, or network streams and sends it to a configured output; a command can be scripted and supervised.
A person actively managing a visual production OBS The interface makes scene and source changes visible to the operator.
Comfort with command-line setup and process supervision FFmpeg It is configurable from the command line, but option order and recovery behavior require care.

This is a workflow recommendation, not a reliability ranking. The sources do not establish a controlled comparison of equivalent OBS and FFmpeg setups over a nonstop event. Reliability depends on the media, computer or server, power, network, encoding workload, process supervision, and recovery plan.

What “nonstop replay” means in OBS

For a prerecorded replay, the video source and the live output are the essential pieces: configure media for playback, then send the scene to YouTube through OBS. Use OBS when you need to combine the replay with other sources or change the visual production while live. Rehearse the exact playback and output workflow you intend to use.

Replay Buffer is not a replay loop

OBS’s Replay Buffer saves recent captured footage; it is not the feature for continuously playing a prerecorded video. OBS project interface strings also indicate that Replay Buffer cannot be used with Custom Output (FFmpeg). Treat continuous file playback, Replay Buffer, and FFmpeg custom output as distinct workflows rather than interchangeable ways to loop a video.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When FFmpeg is the better fit

FFmpeg is a good option for a fixed file or known media sequence when you can configure and supervise a long-running command. Its options apply to the next input or output, so their placement matters. For real-time pacing of file input, FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1; use it in the appropriate input position and validate behavior with the actual media and build.

FFmpeg documentation discusses RTMP output recovery using FIFO muxer options. That is not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing or preservation of a YouTube event. Builds differ, and the recovery documentation cited is a 2024 discussion: check the options supported by the exact installed build, then rehearse temporary disconnects and restarts.

Configure YouTube ingest and test the stream

  1. Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube’s live controls, use the stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send to the broadcast.
  2. Use the recommended ingest settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds. It lists H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring, because platform guidance can change.
  3. Match settings to the source and connection. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the uploaded or replayed media and available upload capacity, using YouTube’s current resolution-specific guidance. Do not assume higher output settings improve a lower-quality source.
  4. Run a representative rehearsal. Test the actual media, duration, resolution, frame rate, audio, network route, recording plan, and reconnect or restart behavior. Check YouTube stream health while testing and during the event.
  5. Protect event access. Confirm the channel and event configuration you plan to use. YouTube’s Live API documentation describes recurring scheduled events and a 24/7 broadcast scenario, but that does not guarantee every account, event configuration, or encoder can keep one event open indefinitely.

Plan for archives, DVR, and recordings

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that statement to promise a complete archive of a broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours. If a full replay matters, plan a separate local recording, check storage capacity, test the recording workflow, and verify current YouTube guidance before the event.

YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. If you disable DVR, viewers cannot seek back during the live broadcast; this does not by itself mean a later recording will be unavailable.

Reliability: rehearse the entire chain

A nonstop stream is a system, not just an encoder. A playback process can keep running while the network fails; a successful reconnect can still leave viewers with an interruption; a stable stream can outlast the capacity planned for its recording. Test the intended setup end to end rather than assuming either application is inherently more dependable.

  • Play the source media for a representative period and verify that its ending, repeat behavior, and audio transitions are acceptable.
  • Check the host’s ability to sustain the selected encoding workload, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Test the actual upload connection and monitor YouTube stream health.
  • Rehearse what happens when the connection drops, the process stops, or the host restarts; verify recovery on the deployed software version.
  • Confirm a separate recording is actually being written if you need a complete archive, and that available storage can accommodate it.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to inspect Practical check
OBS is not continuously replaying the recording Playback source configuration Check the media source’s playback and repeat behavior; Replay Buffer saves recent captured footage and is not the replay-loop control.
FFmpeg exits or behaves differently than expected Command option order or build support Review which input or output each option precedes, and confirm recovery options against the installed FFmpeg build.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Stream URL, key, or ingest protocol Recheck the broadcast’s stream URL and private key, use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS endpoint, and confirm the FFmpeg build supports the protocol and TLS behavior required.
Viewers report poor or unstable playback Bitrate, connection, or encoding workload Check YouTube stream health, confirm CBR and keyframe settings, and compare chosen output settings with source quality and upload capacity.
The broadcast reconnects but viewers still see a break Recovery behavior and event state Rehearse the exact failure and recovery path. Reconnection is not a promise of uninterrupted playback or an intact event.
The YouTube archive is incomplete or absent for a long event Duration and recording plan YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours. Use and test a separate local recording if a complete replay is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the replay is a prerecorded video that should keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating OBS or FFmpeg on a computer you maintain. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera and streams to YouTube only.
