Use Video Capture Device for a live camera or capture card, Image Source for still artwork, and Media Source or VLC Video for prerecorded video or a playlist. The steps below cover each setup and the checks to make before broadcasting.
Choose the OBS source that matches your visual
| What you want to show | OBS source | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| Live webcam or capture card | Video Capture Device on supported systems; V4L2 on Linux; Blackmagic devices have a separate source | Choose a resolution and frame rate supported by the actual device. |
| Still devotional image or graphic | Image Source | Position and size it in the scene; crop or transform it if needed. |
| One prerecorded video file | Media Source | Enable Loop if the file should repeat. |
| Playlist of prerecorded videos | VLC Video | VLC must be installed; OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default. |
OBS’s source list and device controls vary by operating system, hardware, and drivers. Do not assume every field shown in a guide is present in your installation. The OBS guides explain the available source types and properties for video capture devices, sources, and media sources.
Set up a live webcam or capture card
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and add Video Capture Device. On Linux, use the V4L2 source; choose the separate Blackmagic source for supported Blackmagic hardware.
- Select the intended camera or capture device in its properties. If the device is not listed, check that it is connected, detected by the operating system, and available to OBS.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate the device supports. If the selected mode is unsupported, the source may show no picture. On Windows, device properties can include driver configuration, detected or custom resolution/FPS, video format, color space/range, buffering, and optional audio properties; the exact controls depend on the device.
- Fit the image to the scene or adjust its transform and crop. If you switch scenes, decide whether the camera should remain active while hidden. OBS documents Deactivate when not showing as a way to free resources while a source is hidden; reactivating it can cause a short delay. It is off by default in the documented Windows properties table.
Set up a still image or prerecorded media
Still artwork
Add an Image Source, select the graphic, and position, resize, fit, or crop it in the scene. Check the result in the preview so important text or imagery is not cut off.
One video file
Add a Media Source, choose the local file, and enable Loop if it should repeat. Test playback and the transition from the end of the file back to its beginning before going live.

A playlist
Add VLC Video and select the playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to be available. OBS documents Loop Playlist as enabled by default, but verify the setting and confirm that playback advances and repeats as intended. Also test what happens to playback when the source is hidden or its scene changes.
Choose canvas size, output size, and frame rate
Open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange scene elements; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the image size sent to the stream. Set the canvas to suit your scene layout, then choose an output size the computer, source, network, and destination service can handle. OBS lists 720p and 480p as examples of output resolutions, not as a required setting for Marathi devotional streams.

Set Common FPS Values to match your intended output frame rate. OBS’s overview gives 30 and 60 fps as examples and cautions that streaming at 60 fps can be much more taxing on a system than 30 fps. For a mostly static devotional image or slow-moving visuals, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point if you want to conserve resources; that is a practical inference, not an official devotional preset. Faster motion may benefit from a higher frame rate if the source and computer can sustain it. Check the destination service’s accepted formats separately; the setup details here do not establish a particular destination’s requirements.
These are general OBS examples and guidance, not measured performance results for this stream. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide for the distinction between canvas and output resolution and its frame-rate guidance.

Test the scene and playback before broadcasting
- Confirm that the intended camera, image, or video is visible and correctly framed.
- For a media source, check that the file plays and loops; for VLC Video, confirm that the playlist advances and repeats.
- Check that audio comes from the intended input or media and that the OBS audio meters move when sound is expected.
- Run a test for a few minutes before the first real broadcast. OBS recommends a short test rather than immediately relying on an untested setup. A short check can catch configuration mistakes, but it does not prove that a particular computer, device, network, or destination will remain stable for a long continuous stream.
- If the stream must continue through a source interruption, prepare a tested fallback scene or input and know how to switch to it. This is an operational precaution, not a guarantee against failure.
The OBS Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes and checking that audio meters move.
Troubleshoot common source problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Camera or capture source is blank | Wrong device selected, device unavailable, or unsupported resolution/FPS | Confirm the device is detected and selected, then choose a mode it supports. Check the device’s current OBS properties and driver configuration. |
| Camera takes time to appear after changing scenes | The hidden source was deactivated to free resources | Review Deactivate when not showing and decide whether freeing resources is worth the reactivation delay. |
| Media file does not repeat | Loop is off or playback behavior was not verified | Open Media Source properties, enable Loop, and test through the file’s end. |
| Playlist source is unavailable | VLC is not installed | Install VLC, then add or reopen the VLC Video source. |
| Playlist stops or changes unexpectedly | Loop setting, source visibility, or scene behavior differs from what you expected | Verify Loop Playlist and test playback while switching scenes or hiding the source. |
| Stream runs poorly at a higher frame rate | 60 fps can put substantially more load on the system than 30 fps | Try a lower frame rate such as 30 fps and test again; judge the result on the actual system and content. |
| Picture or audio is missing from the broadcast | Wrong source, scene layout, playback state, or audio input | Check the active scene, source visibility, crop, media playback, and audio meters during a short test. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded devotional recordings or a playlist, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS and a computer running at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
