If an OBS update broke your continuous YouTube stream, first preserve your current setup: export the active OBS Profile and the active Scene Collection separately. Then choose the previously working release from OBS’s official release history, verify that its package matches your operating system, and test it with copies of your settings where practical. A rollback can restore a working encoder setup, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback or preserve the same YouTube event.
Before changing OBS, back up its settings and scenes
If OBS still opens, make separate exports before installing another version. The Profile stores stream, video, and output settings; the Scene Collection stores the scenes and sources that make up your production. One export does not replace the other.

- Export the active Profile. In OBS, open the Profile menu and choose Import/Export, then export the profile. OBS describes Profiles as containing stream, video, and output settings that can be exported to JSON for backup or imported into another installation. Save the file somewhere the installer will not overwrite. See the OBS Profiles guide, published January 14, 2022.
- Export the active Scene Collection separately. Open the Scene Collection menu and use its export option. OBS explicitly notes: “Profiles do NOT store your Scenes — use Scene Collections.” Save this export alongside, but separately from, the Profile backup.
- Keep other dependencies in view. Note which plugins your setup relies on and where scene media files are stored. The exports do not establish that plugins, media files, credentials, or every setting will be preserved across a downgrade.
If OBS cannot be opened, do not assume that reinstalling will automatically recover the configuration. The exact manual configuration-file recovery steps vary by operating system; use platform-specific support guidance rather than guessing at file locations or replacing files blindly. The OBS Help Portal is an official starting point, but it is not a rollback-specific, all-platform procedure.

Choose the right rollback route for your operating system
OBS does not provide one verified downgrade procedure here that applies to every platform. The practical options are to replace the installed version with a matching official package, or—in Windows only—to test a separate portable build before changing the main installation.

Find and verify the release package
- Open the OBS Studio releases history and locate the version you want to return to.
- Check the release details and select the package specifically intended for your operating system. Do not use a Windows installer as a rollback method for macOS or Linux.
- Download from the official OBS release page or its official download route. The release list changes over time: on October 3, 2026, it showed stable OBS Studio 32.2.2 and prerelease 33.0.0-beta4. Those are dated observations, not a recommendation that either version is right for your setup.
- Where possible, test the selected version using copies of your exported Profile and Scene Collection before changing the working installation. Do not assume a newer build’s configuration or plugins will behave identically in an older one.
Use portable mode only as a Windows isolation test
OBS’s portable-mode guide, published July 23, 2024, describes a Windows ZIP-based setup that stores its configuration alongside the application. That can help determine whether a separate OBS version behaves differently without sharing the normal installation’s configuration. It is an isolation test, not a universal downgrade procedure or a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting.
Portable mode does not automatically carry the media files used by scenes. Keep the files accessible and verify that every source path resolves in the portable setup. Do not assume moving the portable directory will preserve relative or external media paths.

Restore the setup and check it before production
After launching the selected build, check the configuration and production elements that matter to your stream. Treat these as operational checks, not proof that a particular OBS version or stream has been tested.
- Profile and Scene Collection: Confirm that the intended Profile and Scene Collection are selected; they are separate.
- Scenes and sources: Check scene order, source visibility, and whether media files load from their expected paths.
- YouTube connection: Confirm the streaming service and account or stream-key configuration. Do not expose a stream key while troubleshooting.
- Output and video: Verify the output resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings against the values your channel was using before the update.
- Audio: Check that the expected input, output, and audio routing are available.
- Encoder and plugins: Confirm the required encoder is available and review any plugins the production depends on. A rollback does not guarantee compatibility.
If the encoder is already disconnected, check YouTube before restarting
Open YouTube Studio’s live control room and inspect the actual broadcast state before reconnecting OBS, restarting the encoder, or creating a new event. Do not assume that an encoder restart will keep the same event or URL, preserve the archive, or prevent a playback interruption for viewers. Those outcomes are not established by the OBS documentation linked here. If you cannot risk interruption, make the decision based on the live control room’s current state rather than treating a rollback as a continuity guarantee.
