OBS Studio Portable Mode vs. Profiles vs. Scene Collections for a Loop Stream

Use an OBS Profile for stream and output settings, a Scene Collection for scenes and sources, and Portable Mode for isolated configuration storage. Linked loop media still needs valid paths after a move.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an OBS loop stream, use a Profile for stream, video, and output settings; a Scene Collection for scenes, sources, and global audio sources; and Portable Mode when you want OBS’s configuration stored beside the application on a supported Windows setup. They do different jobs: Portable Mode does not replace the other two, and it does not automatically carry linked video or image files to another computer.

Which OBS option should you use?

Your goal Use Why
Change stream destination, resolution, or output configuration Profile Profiles save most OBS settings, primarily those related to outputs, including Stream, Video, and Output settings. OBS Profiles (2022-01-14).
Change the loop scene, sources, layout, or global audio sources Scene Collection Scene Collections save scenes and sources, including Global Audio Sources set under Settings → Audio. They do not store output settings. OBS Scene Collections (2022-01-14).
Keep a separate OBS configuration beside the application or isolate multiple instances Portable Mode OBS loads its configuration directory from the application path. The OBS guide documents Portable Mode for Windows and says it is unsupported on macOS and Linux. OBS Running in Portable Mode (2024-07-23).
Move the setup, including loop media, to another computer Plan the media paths as well as the OBS configuration Portable Mode does not make linked media files portable; paths in the scene collection must still work on the destination computer. OBS Running in Portable Mode (2024-07-23).

What each setting actually contains

Profiles: output and video configuration

OBS says a Profile saves most OBS settings, mainly those related to outputs. The documented settings include Stream (including Connected Account), Video (including Base/Canvas Resolution), and Output (all types). A Profile does not store scenes. OBS lets you create, duplicate, rename, remove, and import or export Profiles as JSON. See the OBS Profiles guide.

Scene Collections: scenes and their sources

A Scene Collection stores all scenes and sources added to it, as well as Global Audio Sources configured in Settings → Audio. It does not store output settings; use a Profile for those. Collections can be useful when you want distinct layouts or source arrangements for different streams, or a separate collection without overlays for recording. OBS says its import feature can import OBS Studio collections and supports migration from OBS Classic, XSplit Broadcaster, and Streamlabs Desktop, with automatic adjustment for collections created on another operating system. See the OBS Scene Collections guide.

Portable Mode: where OBS keeps its configuration

Portable Mode tells OBS to load its configuration directory from the same path as the application. The OBS guide describes this as a way to relocate the configuration or run multiple instances without their Profiles and Scene Collections crossing over. It is a configuration-storage choice, not a third type of Profile or Scene Collection. The guide’s platform guidance is specific: Portable Mode is supported on Windows and not supported on macOS or Linux. See OBS Running in Portable Mode (2024-07-23).

Set up a loop stream without mixing up the three

  1. Build the loop’s scene arrangement. Add the media and other sources to the intended scene or scenes, then save them in a Scene Collection. If your loop depends on Global Audio Sources, check them under Settings → Audio; those sources are part of the collection.
  2. Save the stream configuration separately. Create or select a Profile for the relevant Stream, Video, and Output settings. Confirm the destination and output configuration in that Profile rather than expecting the Scene Collection to hold them.
  3. Choose whether Portable Mode is necessary. If the goal is just a different layout or output configuration, a Scene Collection or Profile is sufficient. If you need OBS to use a configuration directory beside the app, use Portable Mode on Windows as described in the official guide.
  4. Test the setup before relying on it. Select the intended Profile and Scene Collection, verify the loop sources and audio, and confirm that the stream configuration is the one you mean to use. The OBS documentation explains what each setting stores; it does not provide a loop-stream-specific preset or tested recipe.

Enable Portable Mode on Windows

The OBS Project’s guide, dated 2024-07-23, describes the following Windows procedure for the ZIP build:

  1. Download and unzip the OBS Studio ZIP build.
  2. In the root folder of the unzipped application, either create an empty file named portable_mode or portable_mode.txt, or launch bin/64bit/obs64.exe with the --portable argument.
  3. Start OBS and confirm that you are working with the intended configuration. Portable Mode isolates configuration storage; it does not automatically copy media assets or repair their paths.

These are the options listed in the OBS Portable Mode guide. Its platform note says the mode is not supported on macOS or Linux.

Moving the loop to another computer: media paths need attention

A portable OBS configuration can travel with the application folder, but files referenced by a Scene Collection may still point to locations that do not exist on the other machine. The OBS Project states: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When relocating an instance, OBS says to modify the Scene Collection JSON file manually or use a generic path common on all devices. Before depending on the moved setup, open the collection on the destination computer and verify that each loop video, image, and other required source resolves correctly. Portable configuration alone is not proof that the loop’s assets have moved or will play.

Optional startup parameters

OBS documents command-line parameters to choose a startup Profile, Scene Collection, or scene, as well as parameters for Portable Mode and starting a stream. The OBS Launch Parameters page lists these examples:

  • --collection "name" selects a Scene Collection.
  • --profile "name" selects a Profile.
  • --scene "name" selects a scene.
  • --portable or -p uses Portable Mode.
  • --startstreaming starts streaming automatically.

The launch-parameter page documents these options, but that documentation does not establish that a particular Profile and Collection combination, account-login state, or loop will start and recover as intended. Verify your actual setup before using automatic stream start for unattended operation.

Common setup problems and fixes

  • The stream settings changed, but the scenes did not. Profiles do not store scenes. Select or build the correct Scene Collection for the layout and sources.
  • The scenes changed, but the stream destination or output settings did not. Scene Collections do not store output settings. Select or configure the intended Profile.
  • A loop video or image is missing after moving the folder. Portable Mode does not make linked media portable. Update the asset paths in the collection as needed, or use a path common to both machines; then check the sources on the destination computer.
  • A second OBS instance shares or conflicts with configuration. The Portable Mode guide describes using portable configuration to avoid cross-contamination between instances. On Windows, follow its ZIP-build and marker-file or launch-argument procedure.
  • You are on macOS or Linux and cannot use this Portable Mode procedure. The OBS guide says Portable Mode is not supported on those platforms. Use Profiles and Scene Collections for their respective configuration tasks instead.
  • OBS launches but does not start the expected stream automatically. The launch-parameter documentation lists --startstreaming, but does not establish account persistence or behavior for every loop configuration. Check the selected Profile and Collection, stream connection, and startup sequence manually.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than an OBS configuration mode. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video looping from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
