They can cause different symptoms: Restart playback when source becomes active can send the clip back to its beginning, while Close file when inactive unloads it and may leave a short gap when you return. If the whole OBS preview or several sources stutter, investigate system load separately. The available OBS documentation does not establish YouTube as the cause of this scene-switch behavior.
Identify what is freezing
Before changing settings, switch scenes during a controlled test and note exactly what happens. A clip that starts at the beginning points to a different setting than a brief blank on return; a stalled preview or several affected sources suggests a broader performance issue.

- The clip restarts at its beginning: check whether restart-on-activation is enabled.
- The clip briefly disappears, then returns: check whether OBS closes the file while the source is inactive.
- The clip holds a frame or its playback otherwise misbehaves: test the source settings, then compare source types if relevant.
- The preview or multiple sources become choppy: follow the performance checks below.
Also note whether the clip’s audio continues and whether the problem appears in the OBS preview, the outgoing stream, or both. Those observations help distinguish a local playback symptom from a wider output problem; they do not, by themselves, prove that YouTube is responsible.
Check the Media Source scene-switch settings
OBS’s Media Source plays local files and offers controls including looping, restart-on-activation, hardware decoding when available, and closing the file while inactive. OBS’s documentation for these controls was published on January 11, 2022; labels or availability may differ in your installed version, so confirm them in the source properties. If the clip starts over when you return
- In OBS, select the scene containing the clip, then find its Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open the source’s Properties.
- Turn off Restart playback when source becomes active.
- Apply the change, then switch away from the scene and back once to test.
OBS describes this setting as restarting the file when its source becomes active and visible in the current scene. It is documented as On by default. Turning it off is the targeted test when the unwanted behavior is a restart; it is not a general cure for every kind of freeze.
If the source goes blank or takes time to return
- Open the Media Source’s Properties.
- Check the state of Close file when inactive.
- If it is enabled, turn it off and test another scene switch.
This setting unloads the file while its source is hidden or absent from the current scene, which can save memory. OBS notes that the media may take a short time to appear again after it has been unloaded. If a seamless return matters more than that memory saving, leave the option off. Test it separately from restart-on-activation so you can tell which behavior changed.

Compare Media Source and VLC Video only when it fits
For a single local clip, start with OBS’s built-in Media Source and its playback properties. If you need playlist or extended-media support, VLC Video is another source type to test—not a proven fix for freezing.

When the whole preview or stream stutters
If multiple sources or the broader OBS preview struggle, treat that as a possible rendering or encoding workload issue rather than assuming the media file is at fault. OBS says scene composition uses GPU resources and recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes, and limiting expensive sources or filters when OBS cannot keep up. Make one change at a time and compare the result; a single source symptom alone does not establish a GPU bottleneck. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting
- Simplify the scene: temporarily remove or disable expensive sources and filters, then retest.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate: this lowers resource demand, but changes the stream’s output quality or motion smoothness. Choose settings that suit the stream and the capacity of your system.
- Keep the diagnosis proportional: do not buy a GPU, storage drive, or capture card based only on a local-file scene-switch symptom. The cited OBS guidance does not support those purchases as first-line fixes.
OBS’s Overview Guide describes scenes and sources in the streaming workflow. The troubleshooting guidance is general performance advice, not a YouTube-specific explanation of media-source behavior.

If the problem continues, gather useful details
Before seeking help, capture the conditions in which the issue occurs. This makes it easier to tell whether the problem follows a particular file, source setting, scene, or broader OBS workload.

- Video file format and whether its audio continues during the symptom
- Whether only the clip, the OBS preview, multiple sources, or the outgoing stream is affected
- The relevant Media Source properties, especially restart-on-activation and close-file-when-inactive
- The OBS log from the affected session
The OBS documents cited here describe source behavior and general performance checks, but do not map these observations to a confirmed cause for this specific YouTube scenario. Check what OBS itself is doing before attributing the issue to the destination.
