In OBS Studio, place the overlay higher in the Sources list than the video or background it should cover. Higher sources appear above lower ones in the preview, so a visible source above the overlay can hide it. Reordering fixes the composition; it does not, by itself, keep OBS, your computer, internet connection, or YouTube stream running continuously.
How OBS source order works
The Sources list is a layer stack: the higher a source appears in the list, the farther forward it appears in the scene. OBS Project’s Sources Guide puts it plainly: “A Source that is listed above another Source in the list will be on top and might hide what’s beneath it.” The guide is dated 2022-01-11.

For a typical scene with a video and a graphic overlay, put the video lower and the overlay above it. Source order controls which source draws over another; position and size control where the source appears and how much of the underlying content it covers.
Order an overlay above your video
- Add or select the content source. In the intended OBS scene, add the video, image, or other content that forms the background.
- Add or select the overlay. For a web-rendered overlay, use Browser Source. OBS can load a URL or a local page; see the Browser Source guide.
- Move the overlay above the content. In the Sources list, drag the overlay higher than the source it should cover. You can also select it and use the up-arrow controls to change its order.
- Check the preview. Confirm the overlay is visible and that it sits in the intended position. Adjust its position or size in the preview if it covers too much of the video or important visual details.
- Check visibility and other layers. If the overlay is still hidden, look for another visible source above it that may be covering it. Confirm the overlay itself is enabled and that its browser URL or local-file selection is correct.
Choose the right OBS source for the content
| What you need | OBS source | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web-based alert, chat, or custom overlay | Browser Source | Loads a local page or URL into the scene. | Use it when the overlay is rendered by a web page or widget, then verify that it renders in the OBS preview. |
| One local video or audio item | Media Source | Plays supported local media and provides a loop option. | Use it for a single local file; enable looping if playback should repeat. |
| An ordered or shuffled playlist of local media | VLC Video | Supports playlists, playlist looping, and shuffle. | Use it when you need playlist behavior; VLC must be installed. |
OBS documents these options in its Browser Source and Media Sources guides. A media loop repeats playback; it is not an uptime or reconnection system.

Test the complete scene and stream
Before relying on a continuous broadcast, test the actual output with representative motion and audio. OBS recommends a test before a first stream in its Quick Start Guide; YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health.
- Verify that the overlay appears above the intended content and remains readable.
- Listen for the expected audio and check that video motion and playlist transitions behave as intended.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health messages during the test and broadcast.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your available upload connection and intended output. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
There is no universal computer or bitrate setting for this scene. OBS says system capability depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its System Requirements page cautions that meeting compatible-system requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording performance. The Hardware Encoding guide explains that hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but it does not make a particular device necessary for every setup. OBS suggests using the Auto-Configuration Wizard to help choose settings for your hardware.

Troubleshoot a hidden overlay or looping video
- The overlay is added but invisible: Check whether a visible source above it is covering it. Move the overlay higher in the Sources list.
- The overlay appears but blocks too much: Change its position or size in the preview as well as checking its layer order.
- A browser overlay fails to render: Verify the configured URL or local-file selection, then inspect the OBS preview.
- A single local file stops at the end: Check the Media Source loop setting.
- A playlist stops or behaves unexpectedly: Inspect the VLC Video playlist, loop, and shuffle settings; VLC must be installed for VLC Video.
- The broadcast disconnects or playback stalls: Source order and a media loop do not prevent encoder, network, or YouTube interruptions. Check YouTube stream health and your connection and encoder settings; the OBS and YouTube setup guidance recommends testing and monitoring, not treating a loop as an uptime guarantee.
