For a stereo forest ambience stream, set OBS to Stereo, confirm the ambience source is reaching the Audio Mixer, and choose video output settings that both your destination service and sustained upload connection can handle. If you stream to YouTube, its current guidance recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, CBR video, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. Those are YouTube-specific recommendations—not universal settings or a guarantee that a local computer can run continuously.
Set up stereo ambience audio in OBS
- Open Settings → Audio and set Channels to Stereo.
- Select the device that actually plays or captures your forest recording. If the source is playing on the computer, check the selected desktop audio device; if it enters through a separate device, select that device as appropriate.
- Play the ambience and watch the corresponding meter in the Audio Mixer. The meter should move while the recording plays. If it does not, check the selected device and its system-level output or connection.
- Listen to the stream preview or a short test recording with headphones. Confirm that the intended source is audible and that left and right channels behave as expected.
OBS can use different channel layouts for inputs and outputs; mismatches can cause channel remapping or removal. For a stereo stream, keep the intended output stereo rather than configuring surround sound.

Choose video and audio output settings for the destination
There is no single bitrate that is safe for every long-running stream. Decide the destination, resolution, frame rate, and encoder first; then choose an output bitrate within both the service’s ingest guidance and what your upload connection can sustain. OBS notes that bitrate depends on upload speed and service limits. A setting that works for a short test can still fail when the connection or computer is under sustained load.

If YouTube is your destination, use its current live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate. The guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; constant bitrate (CBR); a 2-second recommended keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds); AAC or MP3 audio; and recommends RTMPS. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Its video bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so use the current table rather than assuming one bitrate applies to every output.

These settings apply to YouTube, not automatically to other services. Check the chosen destination’s current ingest requirements and its continuous-live and archive rules before planning an always-on broadcast.
Make a local OBS setup more resilient
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and enable Automatic Reconnect. Set a retry delay and retry count appropriate for your setup if those controls are available in your OBS version.
- Run the complete scene and ambience source before the planned broadcast. Check the OBS meters, the destination’s preview or stream-health indicators, and the actual audio and video output.
- Test for several minutes before relying on the setup. OBS recommends testing rather than starting a first stream without a check; a brief test can expose configuration errors, but it cannot establish 24/7 reliability.
- During operation, watch for dropped frames and connection warnings. Keep the computer, encoder, scene, and network load within what they can sustain.
OBS capability varies with hardware, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Meeting OBS’s published system requirements alone does not guarantee that a machine can stream continuously.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No audio or a stationary Audio Mixer meter | OBS is listening to the wrong device, or the selected source is not producing audio. | In Settings → Audio, select the intended device manually, start the recording, and verify meter movement. |
| Audio is present but not stereo as intended | The output channel layout or source layout does not match the intended stereo path. | Set Channels to Stereo and test the actual output. Avoid surround output for a stereo stream. |
| Dropped frames or unstable connection | The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. | OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another server and lowering video bitrate. It offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point during diagnosis, not as a universal bitrate formula or guarantee. |
| The stream stops after a disconnect | The local connection or destination ingest may have dropped. | Confirm Automatic Reconnect is enabled, check destination stream health, and investigate the connection or ingest issue. Reconnect settings cannot prevent every interruption. |
| The computer struggles under load | The selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene may exceed what the machine can sustain. | Review OBS’s system guidance and test a less demanding output or scene. A compatible system does not by itself guarantee streaming capability. |
Check continuous-stream and content rules
Continuous broadcasting and archive behavior depend on the destination platform. Confirm its current rules before leaving a stream running around the clock; the platform is not specified here, so no universal duration or archive limit can be given. Also make sure you have the necessary rights to the forest recording and any other audio or visual material. A nature ambience format does not exempt a stream from copyright or the destination’s content policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the forest ambience is a pre-recorded video and your goal is continuous playback on YouTube rather than operating a local OBS encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
