Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a stable OBS-to-YouTube starting point, use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, a supported codec, and a bitrate matched to your resolution and frame rate. For 24/7 ambient music, the settings are only part of the plan: first confirm music rights and Content ID allowlisting, and do not rely on YouTube to archive a continuous stream longer than 12 hours.
Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. Use only a codec and settings supported by your OBS encoder and YouTube’s ingestion path. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP, and automatically transcodes live streams into multiple viewer formats. YouTube’s encoder settings
Choose a video bitrate by codec and output
The following are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not a universal setting. Choose the row matching your output resolution, frame rate, and codec, then make sure your upload connection can sustain it reliably.
| Codec | Output | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 720p60 | 6 Mbps |
YouTube’s bitrate guidance also includes minimums; the values above are its recommendations. The available evidence does not establish one codec as best for every computer. Compare the rate for your intended output, whether your encoder supports the codec, and the sustained capacity of your upload connection. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and watching stream health while live. YouTube’s encoder settings

Set audio for a stereo music stream
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio. For stereo audio, its general encoder guidance specifies 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Confirm that the selected OBS encoder supports your chosen audio format and settings. YouTube’s encoder settings
Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube says initial live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the intended start time. YouTube’s live-streaming workflow
- Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key as a secret; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the available YouTube service option, and provide the stream key. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection where supported by the selected service or server option.
- Set output and audio. In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the stream encoder, CBR, and the bitrate suited to your codec and output from the table above. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that control. Configure stereo audio to a supported AAC or MP3 format, 128 Kbps, and 44.1 kHz.
- Set the video output. In OBS, open Settings > Video and choose a base canvas and output resolution appropriate to your visual and upload capacity, with a frame rate no higher than 60 fps. The bitrate table gives recommendations for 720p and 1080p at 30 or 60 fps; use the matching row rather than carrying one bitrate across different outputs.
- Test before committing to a long broadcast. Start a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, verify the picture and sound, and check YouTube’s stream health. OBS says its defaults are generally suitable unless there is a reason to change them; its guidance also emphasizes choosing bitrates to match the service and available upload speed. OBS Studio overview
- Start sending the stream. Begin streaming from OBS and confirm the incoming stream in YouTube Studio before making it public or relying on it for a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s workflow is to create/select the stream, copy the URL and key into the encoder, configure it, then start sending. YouTube’s live-streaming workflow
A computer running OBS is one way to encode the stream; YouTube also recognizes standalone hardware encoders. No particular computer specification is established here, so test the machine and connection you plan to use rather than assuming a model will sustain a 24/7 broadcast.

Clear music rights before going live
A music stream needs permission for the actual uses involved, not merely a track that sounds suitable or is labeled “royalty-free.” YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects material, it can replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the material remains. Even licensed music can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. YouTube guidance on live-stream content
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

- Check that your license covers a live broadcast on YouTube in the territories where it will be available.
- Check separately whether the license permits the stream to be archived or replayed; live and recorded uses may have different terms.
- Ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID, and confirm that the allowlisting is in place before broadcasting.
- Keep records of the license and any allowlisting confirmation. Do not assume a claim can be resolved without interrupting a live broadcast.
Plan for archives and DVR limits
A 24-hour continuous broadcast exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a complete replay is not guaranteed. It recommends making a local recording as a backup. YouTube guidance on saving live streams
DVR rewind has a related limitation: YouTube says DVR capability may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube guidance on DVR

If a full recording matters, plan a local archive rather than treating the YouTube replay as your only copy. For a long-running broadcast, decide how you will record and retain the source before going live; do not assume a single continuous YouTube event will provide a complete archive.

OBS cannot connect to YouTube
- Check that live streaming has been enabled for the channel; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Confirm that the stream key in OBS matches the stream selected in YouTube Studio. If you suspect the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Verify the selected server or service uses the current YouTube stream URL and RTMPS where supported.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops
- Check whether your upload connection can sustain the chosen video bitrate continuously. If it cannot, reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and retest.
- Use CBR and the two-second keyframe interval as the baseline, and check that the encoder is using a codec supported by the selected YouTube ingest path.
- Test before a public or extended broadcast and keep monitoring YouTube’s stream health; a successful short test does not establish that a computer or connection will remain stable indefinitely.
The broadcast is interrupted after music starts
Check YouTube’s live-stream warning and identify the detected material. Verify that your license covers the broadcast and any archive, and ask the rights holder to confirm any required Content ID allowlisting. A music license by itself does not guarantee uninterrupted transmission if allowlisting is required.

The full stream is missing from the archive or cannot be rewound
For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube may not capture an archive, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Keep a local recording if completeness matters; do not treat a missing full replay as proof that OBS failed to send the live stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS keeps a stream running from the computer and connection you operate. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off while the cloud keeps the channel running. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
