If OBS shows “Encoding overloaded!” during a 24/7 YouTube stream, first reduce the work OBS must do: lower output resolution or frame rate, free GPU capacity, and simplify persistent scenes. Check whether the CPU or GPU is actually the bottleneck before switching encoders or buying hardware. YouTube upload bitrate and stream health are separate checks; a delivery problem alone does not explain OBS’s encoding warning.
What “Encoding overloaded” means
OBS needs GPU time to render and composite scenes even when video encoding is handled by the CPU. If the system cannot keep up with the rendering or encoding workload, OBS may report “Encoding overloaded!” The warning points to a local performance problem, but does not identify which component is limiting your setup. The OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, recommends leaving system resources free and reducing the work demanded by the output or scenes.

Separate that diagnosis from YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance addresses ingest format, bitrate, upload capacity, testing, and stream health. A stream can have local processing trouble, delivery trouble, or both, so check them independently.

Change OBS settings in this order
-
Reduce output resolution
In OBS, open Settings > Video and lower the Output (Scaled) Resolution. This can reduce GPU and encoder workload, at the cost of image detail. If possible, leave Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged: OBS generally advises against lowering the canvas because it can complicate capture setup and asset layout. Treat a canvas change as a last resort for severe resource constraints.

Lower frame rate if the system still falls behind
In Settings > Video, reduce Common FPS Values. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. Lower frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work but makes motion less smooth. Use the highest combination of resolution and frame rate that your system can sustain during a representative test.
-
Match the encoder to the saturated resource
If CPU-based x264 encoding is the bottleneck, a compatible hardware encoder may move encoding work to a dedicated video-encoding component. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, but older generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. Hardware encoding still depends on GPU resources for scene rendering, so it may not fix a GPU-bound system. OBS documents NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox subject to compatible hardware and operating-system support; see its Hardware Encoding guide, dated January 11, 2022.

For x264, a faster preset reduces CPU workload but can reduce compression efficiency at a given bitrate. Make one change at a time and evaluate both OBS performance and the resulting picture rather than assuming a preset is universally best.

Free GPU capacity for OBS
Close other programs that use substantial GPU resources. If OBS is running alongside a game, cap an uncapped frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower the game’s graphics settings if needed. OBS also notes that running it as administrator can help in some Windows GPU-overload cases; it is not a general fix for every machine.

Simplify scenes that stay active
Remove unused or expensive sources and filters, and size sources appropriately for the output. Sources may still consume resources when they are not visible, and browser sources can be demanding. For a long-running broadcast, inspect the scene that remains active most of the time, not just scenes used briefly during setup.
Set YouTube delivery parameters separately
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the codec you actually select. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1; recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency (not over four seconds); and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not a measurement of your internet connection. YouTube’s help page does not display a publication date; these recommendations were accessed October 3, 2026.

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
These values are for H.264 only. YouTube’s recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265, so do not carry an H.264 bitrate across to another codec. Run a speed test, test a representative stream with audio and motion before the event, and monitor YouTube stream health while live. A higher configured bitrate cannot compensate for an unreliable upload connection, and changing bitrate alone does not resolve local OBS rendering overload.

Protect the recording
YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive. Its archive live streams guidance does not promise an archive for a continuous 24-hour broadcast. If the recording matters, enable local recording and verify that the file is growing. Consider whether to divide the broadcast into shorter sessions.

Do not rely on full DVR rewind
YouTube’s DVR guidance says rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need to replay earlier material, plan around that limitation rather than assuming a single uninterrupted stream will be fully rewindable.
Test the actual long-running setup
There is no universal OBS preset or guaranteed stability duration for every 24/7 stream. Performance depends on the machine, operating system, encoder, output settings, scenes, and other running software. Test your own representative workload and monitor OBS performance alongside YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s computer streaming tips advise continuous quality monitoring and checking that local archive files are growing.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports “Encoding overloaded!” | Local rendering or encoding workload | Reduce output resolution or frame rate; check CPU/GPU load; simplify scenes and close GPU-heavy programs. |
| OBS warning persists after switching to a hardware encoder | GPU rendering may still be saturated, or the hardware encoder may not address the actual bottleneck | Free GPU capacity, reduce scene complexity or output workload, and confirm the hardware encoder is compatible. |
| YouTube stream health indicates delivery trouble without OBS’s overload warning | Upload capacity, bitrate, or ingest configuration | Check connection reliability, use codec-appropriate YouTube settings, and run a representative pre-stream test. |
| Both OBS overload and YouTube delivery issues occur | More than one constraint may be present | Address local processing and upload/ingest separately; changing only one may leave the other unresolved. |
| Long stream is missing or incomplete as a replay | YouTube’s 12-hour capture or DVR limits | Keep a local recording and consider shorter broadcast sessions if archive or rewind access matters. |
