If OBS reports that a media source file is missing, first determine whether the named source is a local file or a playlist/network input. For a missing local file, restore it to the saved location or update the source’s file path. For a YouTube playlist that is listed but has stopped or frozen, inspect the playlist and VLC source settings instead: changing a local file path will not repair a network input.
First identify what kind of source failed
OBS has different source types for local media and playlists. Its Media Sources documentation describes Media Source as a way to add media files, while VLC Video Source supports playlists. The source name and its properties are more useful clues than the fact that the problem appeared after a reboot.

| What you see | Likely input | First check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS identifies a missing file on the computer | Media Source, or a local-file entry in a playlist | Check that file’s saved location and update the path if needed. |
| The source is still listed, but a YouTube playlist stops or freezes | VLC Video Source or another network input, depending on setup | Check playlist entries, VLC availability, playback settings, and whether the source plays in the OBS preview. |
A reboot may be when you first noticed the problem, but it does not by itself establish the cause. The operating system, drive mapping, exact error text, and source settings all matter.

- Select the affected source. In the OBS scene, select the source named in the warning. Open its properties and inspect the file path. OBS’s Media Sources guide explains the media-source properties.
- Check whether the file still exists at that location. If it was moved, renamed, or stored on a drive that is unavailable, restore it to the saved location or use the file browser in the source properties to point OBS to its current location.
- Confirm the preview. After updating the reference, check whether the media appears and plays in the OBS preview. If it does not, verify that you selected the intended file and that it can be accessed from the computer.
- Remove an obsolete source. If the file and source are no longer needed, remove the source rather than leaving a broken reference. An OBS forum thread provides a community example of updating a missing file location or removing the source; it is not a formal support guarantee: “New OBS installation > Some files are missing since the last time OBS was used”.
Check a YouTube playlist or VLC source
If OBS does not name a missing local file and the playlist source remains in the scene, troubleshoot it as a playlist or network input. The OBS VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC, so check that the installed VLC architecture matches OBS if the source is unavailable or will not play.

Verify playlist entries
Open the VLC Video Source properties and confirm that the expected entries are still present. For local-file entries, check that each file is accessible at its listed location. For network entries, confirm that the source address is still valid for your setup. A playlist entry that points to a missing local file can fail even when the playlist source itself remains in OBS.
Review loop and visibility behavior
OBS documents separate VLC Video Source controls for looping a playlist and for stopping or restarting playback when the source becomes visible or hidden. Check those settings if the playlist ends, stops when hidden, or starts over unexpectedly. The exact options and behavior should be checked in the properties for the source in your installed OBS version.

Use the preview to separate input trouble from stream output
Check whether the playlist plays in the OBS preview. If it does not, focus first on the source, playlist entries, VLC installation, and playback settings. If it does play in the preview but viewers cannot see it, investigate the outgoing broadcast separately. OBS distinguishes scene sources from the broadcast output in its Sources Guide; this sequence helps narrow the fault but is not a guaranteed diagnosis.

If the playlist freezes after it starts
One OBS forum poster reported a VLC source ingesting a YouTube playlist freezing after about an hour. That is an individual report, not evidence that this is a common OBS or YouTube failure or that one fix applies to every setup. You can use the checks above to identify whether the source still plays in OBS and whether the playlist entries and playback settings are intact. The report is in the thread “Question / Help – VLC Source Freezing in OBS”.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Warning names a local media file | Does the file exist at the path shown in source properties? | Restore it there or browse to its current location; remove the source if it is obsolete. |
| Playlist source is present but nothing plays | Are entries present and accessible, and is VLC installed with the architecture required by OBS? | Correct the entries or install the matching VLC version, then check playback in the preview. |
| Playlist ends or restarts unexpectedly | Review the VLC source’s loop and visibility behavior. | Set playback behavior to match how the source is used in the scene. |
| Preview plays but viewers do not see the source | Is the issue limited to the outgoing broadcast? | Investigate the stream output separately from the scene source. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping the stream running from OBS on your computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video looping, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not stream from a camera.
