Use OBS recording if you need a continuous local copy of your 24/7 YouTube stream. Use Replay Buffer if you want to save recent footage only when something happens. They serve different retention goals. YouTube’s DVR setting is separate: it controls whether viewers can seek back during a live stream, not whether OBS saves a local file.
Replay Buffer vs. recording: which should you use?
| Decision | Replay Buffer | Continuous recording |
|---|---|---|
| Retention goal | Save a recent moment on demand | Keep a local copy of the full stream |
| What gets saved | A recent buffered segment when you trigger the save | An ongoing recording file or files |
| What to configure | Enable Replay Buffer and assign a save hotkey | Choose a recording path, format, quality, and output settings |
| Storage planning | Saved clips use storage; the buffer also uses memory | Capacity depends on recording settings and how long you retain files |
| Effect on YouTube viewer seeking | None; YouTube DVR is separate | None; YouTube DVR is separate |
Replay Buffer is useful for capturing an unexpected moment without keeping the entire broadcast on disk. It is not a substitute for continuous recording if you need a complete archive. Exact behavior and labels can vary by OBS version and configuration; consult the OBS Studio overview and check your installed version.

How to set up OBS recording for a full local copy
- Choose a destination. In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure the recording path under the recording output settings. Choose a drive with enough free space for your intended retention period, and check its available space before starting a long run.
- Choose a recording format. OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire recording. OBS can remux a completed recording if you need another container; test that workflow with a short recording before relying on it. No format prevents every possible failure. See the OBS standard recording output guide.
- Select a quality preset. Under recording quality, Same as stream uses the stream’s settings, but OBS does not allow pausing a recording with that preset. A different recording quality can provide more control, but it uses additional system resources. OBS describes High Quality as a medium-file-size option and Indistinguishable as producing larger files, with potential performance impact on weaker or older hardware. Choose based on your hardware, storage, and what you need from the archive; no single option suits every 24/7 setup. The OBS recording encoder presets guide explains these choices.
- Start a short test recording. Check that audio and video are present, the file plays, and the chosen destination and container behave as expected. Then check available space and run a sustained test before depending on the setup for continuous capture.
Plan storage from your actual settings
File size depends on the encoder, recording settings, and duration. As a sense of scale—not a typical bitrate estimate—OBS Project says its Lossless preset can use around 7 GB per minute of video (OBS Project, 2023). Do not apply that figure to other presets. Estimate storage from a representative test made with your chosen settings, then multiply by the hours or days you intend to retain.
How to use Replay Buffer for recent moments
- Enable the feature. In OBS, open the output settings and turn on Replay Buffer.
- Set the buffer limits. Configure the maximum replay time and maximum memory controls available in your installed version. These are limits, not a universal memory-per-minute formula: the memory needed depends on output settings and encoder behavior.
- Assign a save hotkey. Set a hotkey in OBS so you can save the buffered segment when you want to preserve a moment. Confirm the key works during a short test.
- Check the saved clip. Verify the file’s location, audio, video, and playback before relying on the workflow.
OBS’s interface strings warn that replay saving is unavailable while recording is paused. If you use both features, test the interaction in your installed OBS version rather than assuming a saved replay will be available in every recording state. The OBS English interface strings corroborate the current labels and warning.

Keep YouTube DVR separate from OBS capture
YouTube DVR is a viewer-facing control. Turning DVR off prevents viewers from seeking backward during the live stream; it does not turn OBS Replay Buffer on or off, and it does not prevent a recording from becoming available afterward. For the control’s effects and limits, see YouTube’s DVR help.
Test the stream and recording together
A local recording can put additional load on the same machine that is encoding and sending the live stream, especially when recording at a different quality from the stream. YouTube advises choosing encoder settings that provide a reliable stream for the available connection, testing with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health. It also recommends RTMPS and says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Follow YouTube’s current guidance for your stream’s resolution and bitrate rather than relying on a universal setting: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
