For one local video that should repeat in OBS, use Media Source and enable Loop. For several local videos played in sequence, use VLC Video Source, add the files to its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled if the sequence should start over at the end. These settings loop media; they do not by themselves keep a YouTube broadcast online 24/7.
Choose the OBS source that matches your playlist

OBS describes VLC Video Source as allowing a playlist of items, unlike Media Source. The choice is about how media plays inside your OBS scene—not which source is more reliable or more seamless. Loop one file with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear.
- In the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- In the source properties, select the local file you want to play.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the properties. The video should restart after it reaches the end.
Media Source is for an individual local audio or video file. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV for audio. Treat that list as a documented baseline: actual playback can vary with the environment and installed components. OBS Media Sources documentation

Install the compatible VLC version
VLC must be installed for VLC Video Source to appear in OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s source documentation describes VLC Video Source as the option for a playlist of items. OBS Media Sources documentation

Add files and choose loop or shuffle
- Open the intended OBS scene and select + in the Sources dock.
- Choose VLC Video Source. If it is absent, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches your OBS installation.
- In the source properties, add the local files to the playlist in the order you want them played.
- Keep Loop Playlist enabled to start the list again after its final item. OBS documentation says this is enabled by default.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback. OBS documentation says shuffle is off by default.
- Confirm the properties and check the source in the preview before you start streaming.
OBS versions may present source settings or visibility options differently. Check the exact labels in your installed version. VLC source visibility behavior can determine whether playback stops or continues when the source is hidden in a scene; that is not a control for starting or stopping the YouTube broadcast. What source looping does—and does not—keep online
Loop and Loop Playlist control media playback. They do not ensure OBS remains open, the computer stays powered, the internet connection stays available, the encoder keeps running or YouTube Live continues receiving the stream. A playlist looping successfully in the preview is not evidence of an uninterrupted public broadcast.
If you are considering YouTube’s HLS ingestion rather than a typical OBS streaming setup, YouTube documents HLS-specific requirements such as TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds and no more than five outstanding segments. Those are HLS protocol settings, not general requirements for every OBS-to-YouTube workflow, and they do not establish maximum continuous-live duration, archiving behavior or reconnect policy. Practical checks before relying on a 24/7 playlist
- Confirm the intended source is visible in the active scene and its preview shows the expected media.
- For a multi-file list, verify VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture, then check playlist order and the Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist settings.
- For a continuous broadcast, separately consider power, computer sleep settings, network stability, OBS operation and the YouTube connection. Looping media does not remove those dependencies.
- Use only video and audio you have the rights to stream. A looping source does not change copyright obligations or YouTube’s rules for monetization and reused content.
