OBS Playlist Source vs. VLC: Which Should You Use to Loop Videos on YouTube Live?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use OBS Media Source to repeat one local video; use VLC Video Source when you need an ordered playlist of files. Both are sources inside an OBS scene, not the connection to YouTube: you still need to configure OBS as your encoder and start the broadcast in YouTube Live.

OBS Media Source vs. VLC Video Source

Need Choose Why
Repeat one local video Media Source Its Loop setting repeats the file when playback ends.
Play several files as a list VLC Video Source It supports playlists, with Loop Playlist on by default and Shuffle Playlist off by default.

This is a workflow choice based on the controls OBS documents, not a claim that one source has better playback quality or reliability. OBS does not publish a comparative test establishing a winner for CPU or GPU use, gapless transitions, long-duration playback, or reliability across media files. Test your own files and scene before relying on either for a long broadcast.

Loop one video with OBS Media Source

  1. Add the source: In OBS, select the scene you want, click the + in the Sources dock, and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and select Add Existing only if you intend to reuse a source already in the scene.
  2. Choose the file: In the source properties, enable Local File and browse to the video. OBS documents common video types including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
  3. Set the repeat behavior: Turn on Loop. Playback will restart when the file ends. Check Restart playback when source becomes active and visibility-related options if the source is in a scene you switch away from and back to; those settings affect what happens when it is activated or hidden.
  4. Check framing and sound: Confirm that the video fits the canvas as intended and that the source’s audio is present in the mixer. Play through the end of the clip during rehearsal to confirm the loop behaves as you expect.

Play a playlist with OBS VLC Video Source

  1. Install VLC first: VLC Video Source relies on VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as well; OBS specifies matching 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  2. Add the source: In the OBS scene, click the + in the Sources dock and choose VLC Video Source. If that option is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Build the list: In the source properties, add the media files in the order you want them to play. Review the order before broadcasting; the playlist order determines the sequence.
  4. Set playlist behavior: Leave Loop Playlist on to repeat the list. Turn on Shuffle Playlist only if you want a different order rather than a fixed sequence; its documented default is off.
  5. Review visibility and buffering options: Inspect the source’s visibility behavior if scenes are switched during a broadcast. VLC Video Source also documents a network-caching setting; its relevance depends on the media source and setup.

VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support beyond OBS’s built-in Media Source. That added dependency is useful when playlist handling is the goal, but it also means VLC installation and architecture matter.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

Adding either source only builds the video and audio in your OBS scene. To broadcast, enable live streaming for your channel, configure a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, and configure OBS to send that scene to YouTube using the stream details provided there. YouTube describes encoder software as the way to transmit a produced video feed; its encoder guidance includes OBS.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check eligibility: YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its getting-started guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. If YouTube will not let you start, check the channel’s eligibility and current account status.
  2. Use the stream key carefully: Copy the stream key from the Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. Treat it as a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
  3. Choose encoder settings: YouTube recommends RTMPS. For video it supports H.264, H.265, or AV1, with up to 60 fps; for audio it lists AAC or MP3. Its recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not measurements of either OBS source.
  4. Set keyframes and rate control: YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Match settings in OBS to the codec and output format you selected rather than assuming the source type determines encoder settings.
  5. Test before the public broadcast: YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the real program and checking the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the video is moving, the sound is audible, and the stream health is acceptable before sharing the stream widely.
  6. Keep upload capacity in reserve: YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. If other devices or uploads share the connection, they can reduce the capacity available to OBS.

Rehearse the actual scene and troubleshoot

Run a short private or unlisted rehearsal with the same files, scenes, audio, and encoder settings you plan to use. Monitor both OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room: a source can look correct in the OBS preview while the outgoing stream has a connection, sound, or quality problem.

Symptom Likely check What to do
VLC Video Source is missing from the Sources menu VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and check the menu again.
A single clip stops at the end The Media Source Loop setting may be off. Open its properties, enable Loop, and rehearse through the end of the file.
A playlist stops after the last item Loop Playlist may be off. Open VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
The playlist plays in an unexpected order Shuffle Playlist may be enabled, or the file order may differ from what you intended. Disable shuffle for a fixed sequence and verify the list order in source properties.
OBS preview works but YouTube does not show the feed The encoder connection, stream key, or Live Control Room setup may be incomplete. Check the selected YouTube stream and key in OBS, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
Video or audio quality is poor, or the stream becomes unstable Encoder settings or available upload bandwidth may not support the configured bitrate. Compare the OBS output settings with YouTube’s recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; check connection capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
Playback changes when switching scenes Source activation and visibility settings can affect playback behavior. Review the source’s restart-on-activation and visibility-related options, then test the scene-switch sequence you will use live.

Choose the source that matches the job

For one looping local clip, Media Source is the straightforward choice. For a planned sequence of files with playlist looping or shuffle controls, use VLC Video Source and account for its VLC dependency. Neither choice guarantees seamless transitions or long-run reliability for every file and computer, so rehearse the actual setup and monitor the outgoing YouTube stream.
