A Raspberry Pi can send a camera feed to YouTube Live, but a genuinely unattended 24/7 stream depends on the exact Pi, video source, encoder workload, network, power and recovery setup. Start with a modest stream profile, test it under realistic conditions, and automate restart and monitoring before leaving it alone.
How the stream works
The chain is video source → capture or streaming software → encoded network stream → YouTube ingest → live broadcast. A Pi may capture and encode video from a compatible camera, or relay a source that already provides suitable H.264. Avoid assuming that a particular Pi model can sustain a given resolution and frame rate: there is no model-by-model 24/7 performance guarantee established here.
YouTube accepts live ingest over RTMP/RTMPS and other documented protocols. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The Raspberry Pi camera documentation demonstrates camera output and network-streaming patterns with current tools, but does not provide a turnkey, officially supported YouTube 24/7 recipe.
Choose the source and hardware
Use an existing camera or add a Pi camera
If an existing camera can output a compatible H.264 stream, relaying or remuxing that stream may require less work from the Pi than decoding and encoding it again. Confirm the camera’s output format and how your software will receive it. If you need a new source, Raspberry Pi documents compatible Camera Modules and its current camera software. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Current Raspberry Pi camera documentation uses rpicam-vid; older instructions built around raspivid may not apply to a current installation. Follow documentation for your OS and camera. Desktop OBS may be unnecessarily heavy on a small Pi, and OBS’s encoding guidance does not certify performance on Raspberry Pi hardware.
Plan for stable power, storage and networking
- Use the power supply recommended for your selected model. Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation, for example, specifies 5 V at 5 A for Pi 5 and Pi 500, and 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400. Confirm the requirement for your exact device in the Raspberry Pi setup guide.
- Prefer wired Ethernet when practical. Models without an Ethernet port can use a USB Ethernet adapter, subject to compatibility. Wi-Fi may work, but signal variation and interference make a long-running connection harder to predict.
- Most setups need compatible boot media, commonly a microSD card. Storage for the operating system is not the same as storage for a local recording; recording must be configured separately.
- Use a compatible Raspberry Pi Camera Module only if you need a camera source. These are setup options, not accessories that guarantee uninterrupted service.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, prepare a live stream or scheduled broadcast in the channel you intend to use. Account eligibility and any live-stream restrictions can affect whether you can go live; check the channel’s current Live controls.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key (also called the stream name in some API documentation) from YouTube’s live control room. Google’s API reference describes the primary ingestion URL and stream name and allows them to be combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; the exact fields depend on the encoder. - Enter the URL and key privately in the encoder configuration. Never put the key in a public guide, screenshot, repository or shell command that may be saved in shell history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it, then keep the YouTube control room available to check ingest and stream health.
See YouTube’s RTMPS documentation and live encoder settings guidance.

Choose a conservative encoding profile
Use a profile the Pi can actually produce, especially if it must encode rather than forward an already suitable H.264 source. YouTube’s current H.264 ingest recommendations reviewed in 2026 are:
| Profile | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of Pi performance or a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the stream. The listed 720p recommendation is higher than the listed 1080p recommendation; use the value for the selected profile rather than assuming bitrate always rises with resolution.

- Set H.264 video to constant bitrate (CBR) where available.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s stereo audio bitrate recommendation is 128 kbps.
- Use RTMPS when supported by the encoder.
- Measure sustained upstream capacity during representative network conditions and leave headroom above the encoded bitrate. A speed test is a snapshot, not proof of uninterrupted upload capacity.
For the full current recommendation set, consult YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions. If the Pi shows high CPU load, dropped frames or unhealthy ingest, lower resolution or frame rate first and test again.
Configure capture and streaming software
The precise commands depend on the Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS release, camera and encoder path; do not copy a command for a different input and assume it will work. Raspberry Pi’s current documentation shows rpicam-vid with compatible streaming tools such as MediaMTX, MistServer and go2rtc for camera streaming. Those examples demonstrate camera and network streaming patterns, not a complete supported YouTube setup. FFmpeg is another possible route for encoding and RTMP/RTMPS transport, but its input and codec options must match your source and installed build.

- Update and configure Raspberry Pi OS and confirm the camera or other source works locally before attempting YouTube ingest.
- Pick the source path: capture from a supported camera, or receive an existing stream. Check the source’s codec, resolution, frame rate and audio format.
- Configure the encoder for the target profile, CBR, keyframe interval, audio and YouTube ingest URL. Keep credentials out of public files and logs.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream if suitable for your channel, then inspect both local encoder logs and YouTube’s stream-health status.
- Test a representative period with the motion and audio the final stream will contain. YouTube’s own guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
Make it unattended—and test recovery
A process that starts once is not yet a 24/7 setup. Run the encoder under a boot-managed service with restart-on-failure behavior, retain logs, and arrange monitoring or alerts that can tell you whether the process and YouTube ingest are both healthy. Recovery behavior varies with the software and configuration. A community FFmpeg/systemd project describes recovery for events such as network loss, camera disconnection, encoder restart and host reboot; treat it as an example, not a guarantee for your setup.
- Reboot the Pi and confirm the service starts without a logged-in desktop session.
- Briefly disconnect and restore the network; check whether the encoder reconnects and YouTube receives the stream again.
- Disconnect and restore the camera or source, then inspect logs and stream health.
- Restart the encoder deliberately and verify that the broadcast recovers as expected.
- Check temperatures, CPU load, dropped frames, audio continuity and upload stability during a representative test. There is no published uptime rate or controlled Pi model comparison established for this use.
A community example of an FFmpeg/systemd recovery approach is available at ffmpeg-systemd on GitHub. Adapt and test any service configuration on your own hardware.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before leaving a stream running, make sure you have rights to the video, music and other material in the feed. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted when copyrighted material is detected. YouTube’s monetization policies also distinguish original or meaningfully transformed work from reused content; having permission to use material does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization. Review the YouTube channel monetization policies and copyright guidance for current rules and account-specific notices.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive video | Wrong ingest URL or key, unsupported source format, or encoder not running | Verify the private URL/key fields, source compatibility and encoder logs; regenerate an exposed key. |
| Frequent buffering or unhealthy ingest | Upload variation, Wi-Fi interruption or bitrate too close to available capacity | Check sustained upstream performance, try Ethernet and lower the profile bitrate or resolution. |
| Dropped frames or overloaded Pi | Encoding workload exceeds what the device can sustain | Reduce resolution or frame rate; if possible, avoid unnecessary re-encoding of a suitable source. |
| Stream stops after camera or network interruption | Encoder or capture process did not recover automatically | Inspect service logs and restart policy; simulate interruptions and verify reconnection before unattended use. |
| Pi reboots, throttles or behaves inconsistently | Power, heat or hardware setup issue | Confirm the model-appropriate supply, airflow and stable cabling; check system logs and temperatures. |
| Video works but audio is absent or distorted | Audio input, codec, channel layout or bitrate mismatch | Test the complete audio path and use an accepted AAC or MP3 configuration before launch. |
