You need VLC installed, and OBS recommends matching the app architectures—64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. For a single file, OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler and can loop that file. Neither source setting guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
Which OBS source should you choose?

These documented features are described by the OBS Project in its Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022. The guide lists Media Source video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Confirm that your particular files play correctly in your installed setup.

Set up a playlist of local files in OBS
1. Install the matching VLC version
Install VLC before adding the source. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC; mismatched architectures can prevent OBS from using VLC Video. The OBS guide lists VLC Video support for desktop platforms and gives the VLC installation requirement.

- In OBS, select the scene where the music should play.
- In the Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Create a new source, give it a recognizable name, and confirm.
- In the source properties, add the local media files and arrange them in the order you want.
OBS’s guide documents the playlist controls and visibility behavior, but exact interface details can vary by OBS version. If a control is not where expected, consult the guide for the version you are running.

3. Choose repeat and shuffle behavior
- For the same fixed order every time, leave Shuffle Playlist off and enable Loop Playlist.
- For a randomized sequence, turn on Shuffle Playlist and keep looping enabled if playback should restart after the list ends.
- For a single file rather than a playlist, use Media Source and enable its loop setting instead.
4. Decide what happens when the source is hidden
OBS documents the VLC source as stopping and restarting when it is not visible by default. Its visibility behavior can also be set to keep playing while hidden, or to pause and resume. This matters if the source is in a scene that becomes inactive: with the default behavior, playback may stop while hidden and restart when the source becomes visible again. Set this deliberately and test scene changes before leaving the stream unattended.
What “24/7” means—and what it does not
Loop and playlist controls determine how the media source behaves; they are not an uptime guarantee. They do not certify uninterrupted electricity, computer stability, internet service, encoder health, or YouTube availability. If you run OBS locally, those parts of the setup still affect whether the broadcast stays live. The OBS source documentation does not provide a reliability comparison between Media Source and VLC Video.
An OBS VLC source playlist is a list of media items used by OBS. The cited OBS instructions do not establish a workflow for entering a YouTube-hosted playlist URL as the source.

Check music rights before going live
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. It may replace the stream with a placeholder image after identifying content, and it may interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains. YouTube’s Copyright issues with live streams guidance says that creators with licensed third-party content should ask the rights holder to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. YouTube also warns that a stream may still be interrupted without allowlisting, even if the creator has a license.

- Confirm that your permission covers broadcasting the exact recordings live on YouTube, not merely owning a copy or having permission for another use.
- Ask the rights holder whether the channel needs to be added to the Content ID allowlist.
- Do not assume that buying a track or holding a license automatically prevents an automated interruption.
- Rights and licensing requirements can depend on the recording, rights holder, and territory. YouTube’s guidance does not determine which Indian rules apply to a specific recording or stream.
Troubleshooting common problems
VLC Video does not appear or cannot load media
Check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Then restart OBS and try adding the source again.
The playlist ends instead of starting over
Open the VLC Video source properties and check Loop Playlist. A playlist only repeats if looping is enabled.

The files play in an unexpected order
Check the item order in the source playlist and whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Turn shuffle off for a fixed sequence.
Music stops after changing scenes
Review the source’s visibility behavior. If it is set to stop when hidden, playback can stop in an inactive scene; choose the desired hidden-source behavior and test it.

YouTube interrupts the stream or replaces the picture
Check YouTube’s copyright notice and the rights for the identified content. If you are licensed to use it, contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
