OBS Playlist Source for Continuous YouTube Streaming: Setup and Settings

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use OBS’s VLC Video source to play a playlist of video files. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat it, then configure YouTube’s stream settings and test the full broadcast. Looping repeats the media; it does not keep OBS, your internet connection, or YouTube’s ingest session running by itself.

What you need before setting up the playlist

  • OBS and VLC installed on the computer that will run the broadcast. Their architectures must match: OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • Video files you have the right to stream, with the audio you intend viewers to hear.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have a live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days, and the account holder must be at least 16. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started guidance before treating a blocked stream as an OBS problem.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install matching VLC. If VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source list, check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.
  2. Add the source. In the scene you want to stream, add a VLC Video source and add your media files to its playlist. OBS describes VLC Video as its source for playlists of media items in its Media Sources documentation.
  3. Choose playback order. Turn on Loop Playlist to start the list again after its last item. OBS documents this as on by default. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order; turn it on only if you want randomized playback. Shuffle is off by default.
  4. Set visibility behavior deliberately. The documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If you switch scenes or hide the source, playback may stop and restart. Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting for your production rather than assuming hidden playback continues.
  5. Check audio and caching. Audio Track 1 is the documented default. Preview the playlist and listen for silence, unwanted audio, or gaps between files. OBS documents a 400 ms default for VLC Video network caching; its source page does not give a universally recommended replacement value, so do not treat changing it as a guaranteed fix.
  6. Test transitions. Preview at least one playlist boundary and any scene changes you expect to use. Confirm that video and audio resume as intended.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key using the available connection method.
  2. Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube rather than continuing to use a compromised key. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
  3. Configure the encoder and connection, then start the stream and check the encoder preview in Live Control Room before making it public. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

Choose resolution, bitrate, and protocol

Set output quality according to both the content and the upload connection that will carry the stream. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures below are reference settings, not guarantees that a particular connection can sustain them.

Setting Guidance How to apply it
Protocol YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Use RTMPS for an ordinary OBS-to-YouTube stream unless your workflow has a reason to use another supported protocol.
Rate control YouTube recommends CBR. Choose CBR in the encoder settings where available.
Keyframe interval YouTube recommends 2 seconds; it should not exceed 4 seconds. Set a 2-second interval in the encoder.
1080p30, H.264 10 Mbps recommended by YouTube’s current encoder-settings page, accessed 2026-10-03. Use as a reference, then test against stable upload capacity.
1080p60, H.264 17 Mbps recommended by YouTube’s current encoder-settings page, accessed 2026-10-03. Use as a reference, then test against stable upload capacity.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Check its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full recommendations applicable to your chosen codec and output.

When HLS may make sense

HLS is an option for a specific compatible HDR or codec workflow, not a requirement for a standard looping playlist. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Copyright and livestream readiness

Use material you own or are licensed to stream, including music and any audio embedded in the videos. A playlist that repeats successfully is not evidence that its contents are cleared for YouTube. Check YouTube’s live-stream tips and channel requirements before scheduling a long broadcast, and monitor for stream-health notices while live. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover preparation and broadcast monitoring.

Why a playlist loop is not the same as a 24/7 stream

Loop Playlist controls what the VLC Video source does when its media list ends. Continuous broadcasting also requires OBS to remain active, the source to remain available, a stable connection, a healthy encoder, and an active YouTube ingest session. A setting that loops files cannot guarantee uninterrupted uptime across those separate layers.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is not available as a source VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC in the architecture matching OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Playlist stops or starts over after a scene change The source became hidden and its visibility behavior stops playback while hidden. Review Visibility Behaviour and test the intended scene transition.
Playlist ends instead of repeating Loop Playlist is off. Enable Loop Playlist and test the end of the list in preview.
Audio is missing or wrong The files may not contain the expected audio, or the selected track may not be right for the workflow. Confirm the media’s audio and OBS audio-track selection; listen to a preview and check the YouTube encoder preview.
YouTube reports unstable stream health The upload connection may not sustain the configured output, or the encoder/ingest may be unhealthy. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, test upload capacity, and reduce resolution or bitrate if needed. Retest audio and motion before going public.
YouTube will not let the channel go live Eligibility may not be met, or first-time activation may still be processing. Check verification, recent livestream restrictions, age eligibility, and activation timing in YouTube’s getting-started guidance.
