Short answer: OBS and a VPS are not direct alternatives: OBS is encoder software, while a VPS is a rented remote computer that can run OBS or another encoder. Use local OBS if you already have a capable computer, reliable power and upload, and someone who can monitor it. Consider a VPS when remote operation matters and you have confirmed its encoder capability, sustained outbound bandwidth, and recovery controls. Neither option guarantees uninterrupted streaming; the right choice depends on the failure risks you can manage.
OBS vs VPS: what are you choosing?
OBS Studio captures, mixes, and encodes audio and video, then sends the stream to YouTube. A VPS (virtual private server) supplies a remote computer; it does not replace encoder setup. You can install an encoder on it, but you still need to configure the stream, keep the process running, and monitor or recover it.
| Decision point | Local computer with OBS | VPS hosting an encoder |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | On a computer at your home or studio. | On a rented remote server. |
| Best fit | You have suitable hardware, stable power and upload, and access to check the stream. | You need remote operation and have verified the instance’s compute or supported encoding hardware and outbound capacity. |
| Main risks to plan for | Power cuts, ISP or router interruptions, computer restarts, heat, software faults, and physical access. | Insufficient or throttled compute, provider or network incidents, egress limits or costs, remote administration, and encoder configuration. |
| Check before committing | Sustained upload at the intended bitrate, startup after restart, media and scene behavior, monitoring, and recovery steps. | CPU/GPU encoder availability, sustained bandwidth and egress terms, operating system and GUI compatibility, persistent configuration, restart controls, alerting, region and route, and support. |
| Cost factors | Incremental electricity, backup power, Internet service, and any hardware purchase. | Compute, bandwidth or egress, and any GPU or remote desktop requirement. Current provider costs vary and are not established here. |
This is a practical decision framework, not a measured head-to-head reliability comparison. A low-cost CPU-only VPS should not be assumed to handle every OBS scene or encoding profile: the workload depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s system requirements page cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee streaming capability; that page is dated 2021-08-25. Verify the exact server configuration with its provider or test it before relying on it.
What matters specifically for a stream run from India?
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not require an India-based VPS or prescribe India-only encoder settings. For a local setup, assess the actual ISP route and sustained upload, plus whether power and router connectivity can be maintained. For a VPS, check the provider’s region, route, usable outbound bandwidth, and instance capability rather than assuming that a nearby server will be suitable.

The India-specific choice is therefore operational, not a different YouTube configuration. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights and applicable territory laws on the creator. Those terms do not determine which registrations or licences apply to a particular Indian podcast; get advice specific to the show and its content where needed.
Prepare the YouTube channel and live stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to live stream. Community Guidelines and Terms of Service apply. In an encoder workflow, create or schedule the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder, preview the feed, and start sending it.

YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event. It also recommends checking the preview, testing encoder failover, and monitoring audio and video. For an always-on broadcast, turn these checks into routine monitoring, alerts, restart procedures, and periodic review; that ongoing operating plan is a practical recommendation, not a YouTube mandate.
Encoder settings and upload capacity
The settings must suit the content and the connection between the encoder and YouTube. YouTube’s encoder reference supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, up to 60 fps. For H.264, it recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of stability on a particular ISP or server route.

| Setting | Practical choice or YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose a profile that fits the source material and encoder capacity. The cited YouTube encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps; the bitrate examples here apply specifically to H.264 at 30 fps. |
| Video bitrate | H.264 recommendation: 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 3 Mbps for 720p30. Select the value appropriate to the chosen profile and verify the actual connection can sustain it. |
| Bitrate mode | YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) in its encoder settings guidance. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Transport | Prefer RTMPS when supported; it encrypts the connection between the encoder and Google’s servers. |
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and leaving about 20% upload headroom. Upload capacity may be lower than download capacity, and other devices sharing the connection reduce the capacity available to the stream. Test during the hours and network conditions in which you plan to broadcast, not just when the connection is otherwise idle. For a primary-plus-backup encoder arrangement, YouTube says to account for the primary stream, backup stream, and recommended headroom together.
When HLS is relevant
YouTube also offers HLS ingestion for certain codec or HDR needs. Its documented requirements include 1–4 second TS segments, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. HLS has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed because it sends segments. It is a protocol option for particular ingestion requirements, not a general fix for outages.

Keep a 24/7 broadcast observable and recoverable
Continuous operation adds failure modes that a one-off event may not reveal. A local computer can lose power or connectivity; a VPS can encounter resource limits or provider-network problems. Neither is maintenance-free. Plan who or what will notice a failure, how the encoder will restart, and how you will confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed after recovery.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and listen to the audio as well as checking video; a moving picture alone does not prove the podcast audio is usable.
- Test the complete startup path after a planned restart, including logging in or starting services as required by your setup.
- Decide what happens if YouTube or the encoder connection drops, and test any failover arrangement rather than assuming it works.
- Keep configuration and source media recoverable, and restrict access to the YouTube stream key and server credentials.
- Use alerts or scheduled checks appropriate to your setup so an unattended failure does not remain unnoticed.
YouTube’s streaming tips warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Recovery planning reduces the time a problem goes unnoticed, but it cannot promise that a broadcast will never drop.

Plan the replay, rights, and monetization separately
Do not promise one complete 24-hour replay
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single uninterrupted broadcast lasting 24 hours or longer will produce one complete replay. If a complete replay matters, schedule or segment the broadcast, test current Live Control Room behavior, and maintain a separate recording or archive workflow. YouTube’s guidance cited here does not establish exactly how every stream longer than 12 hours will be handled.
Clear rights for live and archived use
YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live and archived content and to comply with applicable laws and territory requirements. Check the rights for podcast music, clips, recordings, and guest contributions for both the live transmission and any archive. A licence for one use or territory may not cover another; the terms are not India-specific legal advice.
Monetization is not guaranteed by continuous streaming
For eligible channels, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as live monetization options. Its live monetization guidance cautions that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. A 24/7 schedule by itself does not establish that a channel qualifies for monetization or will earn more.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream will not connect or preview | Incorrect stream URL or key, channel eligibility issue, or encoder transport/settings mismatch. | Confirm the channel is eligible, recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room and the encoder, and verify the chosen protocol and codec are supported for the workflow. |
| Repeated drops or unstable stream health | Upload capacity is insufficient or variable; another device may be using bandwidth. | Measure sustained upload, reduce the bitrate or output profile if needed, leave the recommended headroom, and test again under typical shared-network conditions. |
| Audio is missing, clipped, or out of sync | Wrong source or mixer level, muted input, or encoder configuration issue. | Check the selected audio source and levels in OBS or the chosen encoder, then monitor the Live Control Room preview and a separate playback device before relying on the feed. |
| Encoder stops after a restart | The application or stream process is not configured to start again, or source files/configuration are unavailable. | Test a full restart, configure the appropriate launch or service behavior for the operating system, and verify persistent access to the media and settings. |
| VPS cannot sustain the chosen output | Insufficient CPU/GPU encoding capability, resource contention, throttling, or an egress limit. | Check the provider’s actual instance and bandwidth terms, inspect resource use during encoding, and test a lower-complexity profile or a suitable instance before production. |
| One full replay is unavailable | The broadcast exceeded the under-12-hour automatic archive threshold or the archive behavior differs from expectations. | Do not rely on a single 24-hour-plus archive; test segmentation and keep a separate recording workflow if a complete replay is required. |
