For a 24/7 Indian music stream on YouTube, start with RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC at 128 kbps. Set video bitrate from YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations for your resolution and frame rate, and keep at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Before going live, test the stream and any backup encoder—and clear the music rights separately: correct encoder settings do not authorize a song or prevent a Content ID interruption.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Go Live, then create a stream or select one you have already set up. YouTube’s stream management guidance explains how to manage stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. The key lets the encoder send its feed to YouTube; treat it like a password. If someone obtains it, reset it in YouTube Studio. Unless you specifically need manual control, begin with YouTube’s automatic resolution and frame-rate detection.
- Choose a compatible transmission baseline. Use RTMPS, H.264, CBR, progressive video, square pixels, and one stereo audio stream. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. YouTube also accepts H.265/HEVC and AV1, but H.264 is a straightforward compatibility-first choice.
- Set audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio. For stereo, use AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz as a practical baseline.
These are YouTube’s live-ingestion settings, not recommendations for encoding a prerecorded upload. Use the live table in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance when selecting video bitrate.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
For H.264, YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. For AV1 or H.265 at those same resolutions and frame rate, the recommendations are 10 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or encoder will sustain them.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube live bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
Match the recommendation to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. If the available upstream connection cannot carry the selected bitrate reliably—with headroom—choose a lower resolution or bitrate instead of risking repeated drops. Do not substitute YouTube’s separate upload-video encoding table for its live-ingestion table.

Plan bandwidth and test the stream
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Measure outbound upload capacity, not download speed, and account for all outgoing feeds if you send both primary and backup streams. Shared connections can become congested, so test on the actual network and at representative times. YouTube warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” See its streaming tips for network guidance.
- Run a test stream and check the Live Control Room’s stream-health indicator and warnings.
- Listen to the audio and watch the video during the test; a healthy encoder status alone does not confirm that the programme sounds or looks right.
- If using a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm that the player switches to the backup.
- For failover, keep primary and backup settings aligned: resolution, codecs, profile, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and other ingestion details must match.
- A UPS for the encoder and router can help with a local power interruption. It cannot prevent an ISP or YouTube outage.
Plan the continuous stream and its archive
A continuous channel and a complete YouTube VOD are not the same thing. YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but one exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance does not prescribe a rotation schedule. If retaining a YouTube archive matters, use planned shorter sessions rather than relying on one uninterrupted 24-hour event, and keep a local recording backup.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning and placeholder; if the material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A licence alone does not ensure that a live broadcast will pass Content ID checks: if you have permission to use third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube explicitly warns that “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the third-party content.” Read its copyright guidance for live streams.
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers (including public-performance rights), and other royalty participants, as well as to meet applicable territorial requirements. Those terms do not determine which Indian permissions apply to a particular catalogue, channel, territory, or agreement. Confirm that your documentation covers the intended live use and territories, and ask rights holders about Content ID allowlisting. Encoder settings cannot clear rights.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Stream is unstable or disconnects | Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity, congestion, or competing outgoing feeds | Measure outbound capacity on the streaming connection, preserve 20% headroom, account for primary and backup feeds, and lower the chosen resolution or bitrate if needed. |
| YouTube reports encoder or ingestion warnings | Settings do not match the selected live-ingestion configuration | Check codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings against YouTube’s live encoder guidance. |
| Backup does not take over cleanly | The backup feed is not configured to match the primary or failover has not been tested | Match all ingestion settings and conduct a controlled failover test before relying on it. |
| Live stream shows a copyright warning, placeholder, or interruption | Content ID detected third-party material; the channel may not be allowlisted | Verify rights for the intended use and territory, then ask the rights owner to allowlist the channel. A licence does not itself guarantee uninterrupted delivery. |
| A long broadcast is missing from the archive | The event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary | Do not depend on a single event over 12 hours for a complete VOD; use shorter sessions if the platform archive is needed and preserve a local recording. |
