OBS or a Cloud Streaming Service for a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Channel

OBS keeps prerecorded playback local and requires a running computer. Cloud playout can schedule videos without it, but continuous 24/7 channels need a service that explicitly supports looping.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS if you want to control playback locally and can keep the computer and internet connection running. Choose a cloud service if you need a recording to air on a schedule without leaving your computer on. For a continuous 24/7 YouTube channel, verify that the service explicitly supports continuous looping: scheduling one prerecorded event is not the same as nonstop playlist playout.

OBS and cloud playout solve different problems

With OBS, the playback and encoder run on your computer. You set up the source or scene, connect the encoder to YouTube, and operate the stream locally. The computer and its connection need to remain available for the duration of the broadcast. YouTube documents encoder-based streaming and the stream URL and key used to connect an encoder: YouTube encoder help.

A cloud service instead plays an uploaded recording or playlist from its infrastructure. Depending on the service, you can schedule a single prerecorded event or keep a playlist looping. The computer you used to upload the video need not remain on while the service plays it. This describes the documented workflows; it is not a claim that OBS cannot be automated.

Question OBS / local encoder Cloud playout
Where does playback run? On the computer running the encoder and prepared source or scene. On the provider’s cloud infrastructure, for services that support uploaded-video playout.
What must stay available during transmission? The computer and its internet connection. The cloud service runs the playout; your local computer need not stay on.
Best fit Local control of scenes and sources, provided you can operate the computer for the broadcast. Managed scheduling or unattended playback, subject to the service’s plan and limits.
24/7 playlist Requires a continuously running local playback and encoder workflow unless separately automated. Detailed OBS looping steps are not established here. Only a service that explicitly supports continuous looping is established as a fit. A scheduled single event alone does not establish this capability.
Cost considerations OBS is not a subscription in this comparison; equipment, electricity, and connectivity are practical ongoing costs. Subscription price and feature limits vary by vendor and plan.

Choose the workflow that matches the broadcast

For a one-time scheduled video

A cloud service can make scheduling and playout more hands-off. StreamYard and Restream document scheduled prerecorded events, with different plan or workflow conditions. Castr documents both a scheduled premiere and playlist looping. With OBS, you can use an encoder workflow, but you operate the playback and stream session locally.

For a continuous channel

Look specifically for continuous playlist looping, not merely a feature described as “schedule a video.” Castr says its “Scheduled” option is a one-time premiere and its “Loop” option provides continuous playlist playout; its product page says infinite looping is available on Premium and higher. Confirm current plan limits before paying. StreamYard’s and Restream’s cited prerecorded-event documentation does not establish 24/7 looping, so do not infer it from their scheduling features.

For local scene control

OBS is the more direct fit when you need to manage local sources and scenes. The available documentation for this comparison does not establish click-by-click OBS instructions, specific automation settings, or current hardware requirements. Check current OBS and YouTube instructions for your setup rather than assuming a particular loop or unattended configuration.

How to prepare a prerecorded YouTube Live

  1. Choose the format first. Decide whether you need one scheduled event or a continuously looping channel. For the latter, verify that the service explicitly supports a continuous playlist loop and that its plan supports your intended file lengths and playlist size.
  2. Check the recording and playlist. Confirm that you have the video file or files you intend to play and that the service accepts their format and size. Provider-specific upload, storage, duration, and playlist limits vary; check them before uploading.
  3. Connect the broadcast to YouTube. For an encoder workflow, YouTube’s live-stream settings provide the stream URL and stream key used to connect an encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a stream to your channel. Follow YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance for current scheduling and encoder controls.
  4. Schedule or start the event. YouTube says a scheduled stream can appear to subscribers as upcoming, where viewers may choose “Notify me.” A vendor’s own announcement and link-timing behavior may differ; for example, StreamYard describes when its YouTube share link is generated. Confirm the timing with the service you use.
  5. Check the broadcast when it begins. Verify that the intended recording is playing and the YouTube stream is live. For local OBS streaming, the computer and connection must remain available; for cloud playout, confirm that the service has started the event or loop. Scheduling by itself does not guarantee that an event is continuous or that viewers will receive notifications.

Protect your channel and rights

Automation does not grant permission to use a recording, music, or other material. YouTube’s livestream terms say the content provider represents that they have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, for the Live Content. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and confirm that your recording is cleared for the way you plan to use it.

YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. In a July 15, 2025 update, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible for monetization. Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission: having rights does not itself establish monetization eligibility. YouTube also says ads may appear on eligible monetized live streams, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. See YouTube channel monetization policies and YouTube live monetization.

Troubleshoot the workflow you chose

  • The scheduled video does not start: Check whether the event was scheduled in the service or YouTube, whether it is the correct event, and whether the service’s supported workflow and plan cover it. Restream’s cited instructions, for example, specify Studio or encoder workflows.
  • The local stream stops: Check that the computer is still running and connected, and that the encoder session remains active. A local encoder depends on both during transmission.
  • The stream connects to the wrong channel or fails to connect: Verify the selected YouTube account and the current stream URL and key in YouTube’s live-stream settings. Keep the key private.
  • A playlist stops after one video: Check whether the service is set to a one-time scheduled event rather than a continuous loop, and whether looping is included in the selected plan.
  • The stream is live but viewers do not see an upcoming link: Check YouTube’s schedule and announcement settings and the service-specific link timing. StreamYard says its YouTube link appears at the announcement time, or at go-live if no announcement is scheduled.
  • A stream or channel encounters a rights or monetization issue: Review the video’s music and other rights, then check YouTube’s livestream terms and monetization policies. A prerecorded format or cloud service does not bypass these requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.
