Set OBS’s streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds for YouTube Live. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. An always-on broadcast does not need a different interval: use the same setting as for other YouTube live streams.
Set the streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds
In OBS, open Settings → Output and inspect the streaming encoder settings. If the current output mode does not show the control, switch to Advanced output mode and select the Streaming section. OBS explains that Advanced mode provides more output configuration options. The exact controls can vary by OBS version and encoder.

- Open Settings → Output.
- If needed, change Output Mode to Advanced, then open the Streaming section.
- Find the keyframe interval control for the streaming encoder and set it to 2 seconds.
- Check the field’s units before entering a value. If it asks for frames rather than seconds, multiply the frame rate by two. For example, at 30 fps, enter 60 frames.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies a recommended 2-second frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. When the frame rate changes, adjust a frame-based interval so keyframes still arrive every two seconds.

OBS can configure streaming and recording output separately. Set the interval in the Streaming encoder settings—not only in the recording settings—or the YouTube stream may retain a different value.

Also confirm whether the selected encoder’s field is measured in seconds or frames. OBS’s interface includes a frame-based FFmpeg GOP setting labeled Keyframe interval (frames); do not enter “2” there assuming it means two seconds. At 30 fps, the equivalent is 60 frames. At other frame rates, use frame rate × 2.
Test the stream and resolve keyframe warnings
Before relying on an always-on broadcast, test it and monitor stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. If YouTube reports a keyframe-frequency error, check both the configured interval and the field’s units. Intervals should maintain the two-second cadence and must not exceed four seconds.

If Live Control Room reports a GOP warning, check the encoder’s GOP setting. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding; some encoders offer open (variable) and closed (fixed) GOP options.
