OBS does not prescribe a universal setting for dark footage: the right adjustment depends on the clip, and the aim is to reveal shadow detail without washing out highlights or flattening the image.
Choose the right source for your loop
OBS filters can be applied to an individual source or to a whole scene. To change only the clip, open the video source’s context menu and choose Filters; applying the correction to a scene can affect other scene elements as well. The OBS Filters Guide describes source and scene filters and lists Color Correction among its available effects: OBS Filters Guide.

Loop one local video
Add a Media Source and select the local file. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Enable Loop to repeat the file. OBS documents Loop as off by default; Restart playback when source becomes active is on by default. The latter determines whether playback starts over when the source becomes active again, which matters if you hide and show it during a stream. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Add Color Correction to the video source
- In OBS, locate the scene containing the loop and select the clip’s video source.
- Open the source context menu and choose Filters.
- In the effect filters area, add Color Correction. OBS describes it as modifying a source’s color without changing the source file itself. The filter is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux in the OBS page dated January 12, 2022: Color Correction Filter.
- Adjust gamma, contrast, and brightness in small increments. Inspect several representative moments, including the darkest scene and a scene with bright areas.
- Check the stream output, not only the editing preview, before going live. Look for shadow detail while checking that bright areas retain detail and the picture still looks natural.
What the controls do—and what their ranges mean
The documented controls and defaults are:
| Control | Documented range | Default | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gamma | -3.0 to 3.0 | 0.0 | Adjust gradually while judging visibility in darker tones. |
| Contrast | -4.0 to 4.0 | 0.0 | Use alongside gamma; watch for crushed shadows or a flattened image. |
| Brightness | -1.0 to 1.0 | 0.0 | Make small changes and check that highlights are not washed out. |
| Saturation | 0.0 to 5.0 | 0.0 | Adjust only if color intensity also needs correction. |
| Hue Shift | -180.0 to 180.0 | 0.0 | Changes hue; it is not a general brightening control. |
| Opacity | 0.0 to 1.0 | 1.0 | Controls source opacity rather than exposure. |
| Color Multiply | Not stated | #ffffff | Applies a tint to lighter colors. |
| Color Add | Not stated | #000000 | Changes darker colors. |
These are control ranges, not recommended correction values. The OBS documentation provides no preset for “dark footage.” A LUT is another listed filter option for color grading, but OBS does not say a LUT is necessary to brighten a dark clip.
Check the picture and avoid common misdiagnoses
- Some shadows remain dark: inspect more than one point in the clip before increasing gamma or brightness further. A change that helps one scene may harm another.
- The image looks washed out: reduce or undo the adjustment and reassess contrast and highlights. Do not treat maximum brightness as the goal.
- Colors look wrong: check whether saturation or hue has changed unintentionally; those controls affect color, not just visibility in shadows.
- The whole scene changed: move the filter from the scene to the individual video source if only the clip should be corrected.
- The source looks unexpectedly washed out or crushed: Media Source’s YUV Color Range defaults to Partial. Do not change the range blindly; first diagnose whether the source and range interpretation are mismatched.
OBS supports HDR workflows under specific conditions; HDR is not a general-purpose fix for dark SDR footage. YouTube’s HDR guidance requires compatible HDR content and an encoder, and its listed OBS setup requirements specify OBS 30.1 as a minimum. The same guidance says unsupported viewers receive SDR and that Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors. Consult YouTube’s current HDR live-streaming guidance if the source is genuinely HDR rather than applying HDR settings to an ordinary SDR clip.

Keep the stream live: OBS at home or cloud playback
OBS: local playback and streaming
OBS is encoder software: it converts video for streaming and supports advanced productions, as described in YouTube’s encoder help. With a local OBS loop, your computer and internet connection must remain available for the stream. Configure the Media Source or VLC playlist, correct the video source, and use your YouTube stream key in the streaming setup; treat the key as private and do not share it.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.
