To keep an OBS playlist playing and recover its YouTube connection after a drop, configure two separate controls: loop the media source or playlist, and enable OBS’s automatic reconnect under Settings → Advanced. Then check YouTube Live Control Room: an OBS retry alone does not prove viewers can see a recovered broadcast.
Configure the playlist and reconnect separately
Playlist looping handles the end of your local media. Automatic reconnect handles a break in OBS’s connection to YouTube. Neither setting does the other’s job.

Loop one video
- In OBS, add or select a Media Source for the video.
- Open the source’s properties and enable Loop.
- Confirm the file is accessible and plays as expected before going live.
Loop a playlist
- Add a VLC Video source and add the files in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off if playback order matters; confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documentation describes it as on by default, but check the setting.
- If VLC Video is missing, install VLC. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Loop controls apply to the local source or playlist only. They do not restore a disconnected YouTube output.

- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find the Automatically Reconnect controls and enable automatic reconnect.
- Set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries to suit your operating needs. OBS’s API reference says the wait doubles on each retry; a retry count of zero disables reconnecting. The official materials do not prescribe one best setting for YouTube, so do not treat any particular pair of values as universal.
- Apply the settings and test a deliberate connection interruption before relying on them unattended.
Reconnect attempts are bounded by the configured retry limit. They are a recovery behavior, not a guarantee of uninterrupted viewing.

Connect OBS to the intended YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the relevant event in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. If OBS offers a YouTube service connection, use the account and event intended for this broadcast.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not share it publicly. If it is reset, update OBS with the new key; YouTube says the stream owner or manager permission is required to reset it.
- Check the event’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings. These govern broadcast start/stop behavior when the encoder connects or disconnects; they do not loop local media or configure OBS retries.
YouTube’s interface and available stream features can vary by account and may change. Verify the event and its lifecycle settings in Live Control Room rather than assuming an encoder connection starts or stops the broadcast in the way you intend.
Test the full path before leaving it unattended
- Use representative video motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before the event and checking stream health in Live Control Room.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and health messages while OBS is connected. Confirm that the public watch page is accessible to the intended audience.
- Test recovery by stopping the primary encoder or interrupting its network connection. Observe whether OBS retries, whether YouTube receives the feed again, and whether the public event behaves as intended.
- If you record locally, check that the recording file exists, is valid, and continues growing during the test.
- Check upload capacity and encoder CPU/network conditions under representative load. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, keyframes, and RTMP(S) rather than assuming a single profile suits every connection.
- For a critical always-on channel, test a backup encoder or failover path and decide who will monitor and respond to problems.
YouTube states that encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous broadcast longer than that should not be planned on the assumption that one broadcast archive will run indefinitely.

Troubleshoot disconnects and failed recovery
OBS disconnects and stops retrying
Check OBS’s connection status and logs to see whether it is retrying or has reached the configured limit. Confirm that automatic reconnect is enabled and the retry limit is not zero. Since retry waits lengthen on successive attempts, do not mistake a longer pause for proof that the playlist itself has stopped.
OBS reconnects, but the YouTube event appears offline
Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, then inspect the event’s Auto-start and Auto-stop behavior. A successful encoder retry is not by itself confirmation that viewers see a healthy, accessible broadcast.

The stream will not start or YouTube stops receiving it
Confirm OBS is using the stream URL and key for the intended event. If the encoder cannot start, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says users of third-party encoders may need to copy a new stream key and update the encoder. Keep the key private when replacing it.
The video ends instead of repeating
Check the source type and its loop property: Loop for a single Media Source file, or Loop Playlist for VLC Video. Confirm the source is still active and the files remain accessible. OBS reconnect settings cannot correct a source that has finished playing or lost access to its media.

Playback is unstable under load
Run an upload speed test, test with representative content, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. Adjust encoder settings using YouTube’s current guidance for your codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity; no single bitrate or profile is established as right for every connection.
