If an audio device disappears during a long YouTube stream, first check whether Windows still detects it. If Windows has lost the device, troubleshoot the connection, device detection, and driver. If Windows still sees it, check the audio source selected in OBS and how that source is configured. If the device remains available but viewers hear silence, troubleshoot YouTube playback separately. These symptoms have different causes; changing stream bitrate is not a fix for a device missing from the audio list.
First, find out where the audio disappeared
When the problem happens, check Windows before changing OBS settings. Open Windows sound settings and see whether the device is listed; if it is an output device, also check Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers. Note whether the device is absent from Windows, present in Windows but unavailable or silent in OBS, or working locally while YouTube playback is silent.

Record the device model, Windows version, connection type, OBS version, and how long the stream had been running when the problem began. This information can help distinguish a system or connection issue from an OBS source-selection problem.
If Windows no longer detects the device
Use Microsoft’s documented checks for a missing or undetected Windows audio output device. They are recovery suggestions, not a guaranteed fix; the right result depends on the device and system.

- Check Device Manager. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the device appears but is disabled, enable it if that option is available.
- Show hidden devices and scan again. If the device is not listed, use Device Manager’s option to show hidden devices, then scan for hardware changes.
- Check the manufacturer’s driver. Get the latest audio driver for your Windows version from the PC or audio-device manufacturer’s support site, and follow its installation instructions.
- Run the audio troubleshooter. Use the Windows audio troubleshooter, then restart the PC and check whether Windows detects the device again.
If Windows still cannot see the device after these steps, check the manufacturer’s guidance for that particular model and connection. The available guidance does not establish one cause or a universal fix for a device that vanishes only after a long stream.
If Windows sees the device but OBS does not
OBS can capture audio through a source attached to a scene or through a device selected globally in OBS settings. Check the relevant source and the active scene before adding another capture source.

- Check the scene’s audio source. In the scene that is live, select the relevant Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source and verify that it is set to the intended device. Confirm the source is enabled and not muted in the Audio Mixer.
- Check global audio devices. Open Settings > Audio and review the global devices. Confirm that the intended device is selected where appropriate.
- Avoid capturing the same device twice. OBS warns that using the same device as both a scene-specific source and a global device can cause echo. If you use a scene-specific source, disable the corresponding global device as appropriate rather than adding a duplicate capture.
OBS’s audio-source documentation explains source and device configuration, but does not give a universal hot-reconnect procedure for a device that disappears midstream. If the device vanishes from OBS while Windows continues to detect it, verify the selected device and source arrangement first; do not assume that adding a second source will restore it.

Separate a capture problem from a playback problem. If the OBS source is still present and appears to be working, but YouTube playback is silent, check the browser or device volume, the device’s sound settings, and whether restarting the browser or device restores sound. YouTube’s no-sound guidance addresses playback checks; it does not diagnose an OBS source that has disappeared.

If the stream also drops frames or disconnects
Keep network symptoms separate from local audio-device loss. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance when stream-health indicators show dropped frames or a disconnection. That symptom alone does not explain why a device vanished from Windows or OBS, so changing bitrate is not an appropriate first response to a missing local audio device.
USB power and driver suggestions: use them conditionally
An OBS forum discussion about audio cutouts during streaming includes user suggestions involving USB power settings and drivers. Those reports are anecdotal, differ by hardware, and do not establish a general OBS bug or confirmed fix. Consider a USB power-setting check only if the affected device is USB-connected and the symptoms fit; prefer the current instructions from the device or PC manufacturer rather than applying a generic setting change.

Prevent a repeat and capture useful details
- After recovering the device, confirm it is listed in Windows, selected in the intended OBS source or global setting, and producing audio in OBS before starting another long stream.
- If it fails again, note the time of failure and whether Windows, OBS, or only YouTube playback lost audio. Include the device and connection type, Windows and OBS versions, and the elapsed stream time when asking the manufacturer or OBS community for help.
- Do not replace a cable, hub, headset, microphone, or interface without evidence that the component is faulty. The available troubleshooting guidance does not establish that any one of those parts is responsible.
