A renderer uses those instructions to adapt the mix to a compatible playback system. Unlike a fixed-channel mix, in which audio is routed to channels associated with set speaker positions, an object can be positioned or moved independently.
What is an audio object?
An audio object combines a discrete sound element with metadata that describes its position or movement. The sound might be dialogue, music, or an effect; the metadata tells the renderer where to place it in the sound field. Dolby describes an object as “a discrete audio element that can be placed anywhere in the three-dimensional sound field” in its Dolby Atmos beds-and-objects guidance.

The key distinction is that the sound is not permanently assigned to one speaker channel in the mix. Instead, the playback renderer interprets the spatial instructions for the supported system. Object-based rendering does not guarantee that a sound will come from a particular physical speaker: the result depends on the format, renderer, playback equipment, and speaker arrangement.

In channel-based audio, a mix is routed into channels associated with fixed speaker locations. A multichannel bed follows that approach: its channels have defined routing. Objects use spatial metadata so their placement can be handled independently. Many immersive mixes combine both approaches rather than choosing only one.
#1 Best Overall
- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
| Representation | How audio is described | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| Channel-based audio | Audio is assigned to channels with fixed relationships to speaker positions. | Delivers a mix through a defined channel layout. |
| Bed | A multichannel bus with fixed channel routing. | Provides a stable foundation for elements suited to fixed placement. |
| Object-based audio | A discrete sound element is paired with spatial metadata, such as position. | Lets the renderer place or move that element independently in the sound field. |
A bed and objects can coexist in one mix. Dolby’s professional guidance describes a typical Dolby Atmos music workflow with one bed and up to 118 objects, using a default 7.1.2 bed. Those figures describe Dolby’s workflow, not a universal limit or requirement for other object-audio formats. Fixed or static elements may be routed to a bed or an object; dialogue and effects do not have to use one representation in every production.
What does the renderer do?
The renderer interprets the spatial metadata and produces audio for the available supported playback configuration. This flexibility can make spatial content usable across different arrangements without requiring every listener to own the exact speaker layout used during production. It does not mean all systems produce identical sound, support every layout, or can reproduce every position through a discrete physical speaker.

Formats differ in how they handle playback. DTS describes DTS:X as not tied to one prescribed channel count or speaker configuration; that is a format-design description, not a promise that no compatible equipment is needed or that every installation sounds the same. MPEG-H 3D Audio likewise describes flexible rendering across listening scenarios.
How object-based surround sound differs by format
- Dolby Atmos: Uses beds and objects together. Dolby’s July 15, 2025 professional guidance gives the Dolby-specific example of a default 7.1.2 bed and up to 118 objects in a typical music mix.
- DTS:X: DTS describes the format as object-based and not bound to a prescribed speaker configuration or channel count.
- MPEG-H 3D Audio: MPEG describes flexible rendering for immersive audio across listening scenarios.
- MPEG-I immersive audio: MPEG describes support for six degrees of freedom (6DoF): a listener can change orientation and move through a scene. Its immersive-audio features can also represent acoustic properties such as reverberation and occlusion. This is a more interactive capability, not a feature to assume in every home-theater surround format.

Does object-based audio always sound better?
No universal improvement follows from the label alone. Object-based audio gives a renderer spatial information it can use to adapt a mix, but whether that produces a noticeable benefit depends on the content, format implementation, renderer, room, and playback system. The format description by itself does not establish that a listener will hear an improvement over a particular channel-based mix.
