Is O2 5G+ available in Bristol?
Yes. Virgin Media O2 announced the Bristol launch on 6 October 2026, naming the city centre, Harbourside, surrounding neighbourhoods and Avonmouth. The company says up to 495,000 people across Bristol could benefit. Its announcement also says its wider rollout programme aims for at least 90% outdoor 5G+ coverage in each town or city in the programme; that figure is not a claim about 90% of Bristol residents, indoor coverage or a specific property. Virgin Media O2’s Bristol announcement places the rollout within its £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan.

City-level availability does not establish whether a particular street, building or room has 5G+ reception. Check O2’s coverage checker for the location you use; indoor signal and experience can differ from outdoor coverage.
What is 5G+ and how is it different from earlier 5G?
O2 uses “5G+” as its consumer name for 5G Standalone. The distinction is in the network architecture: 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) uses a 5G radio access network connected to a 4G core, while SA uses a 5G core. Ofcom’s Mobile Matters 2024 report explains that SA can deliver much lower latency than NSA. Its analysis describes UK 5G connections from a period that included October 2023 to March 2024 and combines NSA and SA; it is not a Bristol measurement or a direct performance comparison between the two architectures.

What might Bristol customers notice?
Virgin Media O2 describes the upgrade as offering faster speeds, better reliability and lower latency. Those are the operator’s stated intended benefits, not independently measured Bristol results. The launch announcement gives no Bristol-specific speed or latency figures, so it does not establish the improvement a customer will see at a particular place or time.
In the announcement, O2 Director of Mobile Access Engineering Professor Robert Joyce said the rollout would bring “faster speeds, lower latency and improved reliability” and said the company was investing in strengthening its network in the city. This is an operator representative’s description of the upgrade, not an independent assessment.

Who can get O2 5G+?
O2’s current guidance says customers need all of the following:
- A compatible device on O2’s current 5G+ device list.
- An O2 Pay Monthly plan.
- One of O2’s latest SIMs or an eSIM.
- Availability of 5G+ where they are using the service.
O2’s current 5G+ guidance lists the Samsung Galaxy S26 among compatible devices. The live list can change, so check it before buying a phone or changing your service. A compatible handset by itself is not enough: the plan, SIM or eSIM, and local coverage conditions also apply. If your existing phone is already on O2’s eligible list, buying another phone is unnecessary for compatibility.

Does 5G+ cost extra, and do you need a new SIM?
O2 says 5G+ is available at no extra cost to eligible customers. That does not remove the Pay Monthly, compatible-device, current-SIM-or-eSIM and coverage requirements.
O2’s current guidance requires one of its latest SIMs or an eSIM, but does not say every customer must switch from a physical SIM to an eSIM. Check whether your existing SIM meets O2’s current requirement before making a change.

What happens outside a 5G+ area?
O2 says a compatible device falls back to the best available network when 5G+ is unavailable. The Bristol launch therefore does not mean a phone will remain on 5G+ throughout the city or indoors; the connection depends on coverage where the device is being used.

How does the Bristol launch fit O2’s wider 5G SA rollout?
Virgin Media O2 first announced its nationwide 5G SA launch in February 2024, initially covering 14 cities. That announcement’s device, software and R15 SIM requirements described the initial launch at that time, not the complete current eligibility rules. For Bristol customers, O2’s present 5G+ guidance is the relevant source for checking devices and service requirements.
