All eight begin in the quarterfinals: seeds 1–8, 2–7, 3–6 and 4–5. Regular-season points determine the seeds, with an ordered set of tiebreakers separating teams level on points.
How does the NWSL playoff format work?
Each of the 16 teams plays 30 regular-season matches—15 at home and 15 away. The top eight qualify for the playoffs, and every qualifier plays in the opening round; there are no byes. The tournament is single elimination, so a team is out after a loss.

The league’s 2026 Competition Rules & Regulations state: “At the conclusion of the Regular Season the top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs, with all playoff teams playing in the opening round.”

Quarterfinal opponents are determined by seed:

| 4 | Seed 4 vs. seed 5 | Winner faces the winner of seed 1 vs. seed 8 |
The two semifinal winners advance to the championship. A higher seed can have a more favorable opening opponent and a home venue in the first two rounds, but the bracket does not change based on results elsewhere.

How are NWSL playoff seeds determined?
Teams earn three points for a win, one for a tie and none for a loss. The team with the most points ranks highest. If teams are level on points, the 2026 rules apply these criteria in order:
- Goal differential.
- Most total wins.
- Most goals scored.
- Head-to-head points accumulated.
- Most goals scored head-to-head.
- Fewest accumulated disciplinary points.
- A coin flip if two teams remain tied, or drawing of lots if three or more remain tied.
The sequence is applied from the top down: once a criterion separates the tied teams, later criteria are not needed to rank them. For example, if goal differential breaks the tie, the teams do not proceed to the wins comparison.

How disciplinary points work
At the disciplinary tiebreak step, fewer points is better. The rules assign one point for a yellow card, three for an indirect red resulting from two yellows, four for a direct red, and five for a yellow card plus a direct red. Only one of those totals applies to a player in a single game.
Who hosts NWSL playoff matches?
The higher seed hosts quarterfinal and semifinal matches when venue availability permits. If the higher seed cannot host because of venue availability, the lower seed may host. The 2026 rules cited here do not establish that the higher seed hosts the championship, so a higher seed should not be assumed to have a home final.

What happens if an NWSL playoff game is tied?
If the score is level after 90 minutes, the teams play two 15-minute extra-time periods in their entirety. If the score is still tied after extra time, a penalty shoot-out decides the winner.

The league’s announced 2026 season framework lists November 6–8 for the quarterfinal window, November 13–15 for the semifinals and November 21 for the championship. These are season-specific announced dates, not permanent format rules; check the NWSL schedule for current details. The league announced that the 2026 playoff and championship presentation would use the Google Pixel name.
