NVMe storage and caching can both help a website respond faster, but they address different parts of the request path. NVMe can reduce storage access delay when disk I/O is a measured constraint; caching avoids repeated downloads, origin requests, or computation. Neither guarantees a faster page by itself. First identify where time is being spent, then change the layer responsible.
Where page-load time is spent
A page request can involve a browser, network, CDN, web server, application code, database, and storage device. Time spent waiting for a network response, generating a page, reading data, or downloading assets has different causes and fixes. A faster storage device cannot compensate for slow client-side code or a distant server, and an effective cache cannot eliminate work that must happen for every personalized request.

NVMe is an interface and ecosystem for communication between host software and non-volatile memory over PCI Express. NVM Express describes the interface as lower-latency and more scalable for SSDs than legacy interfaces such as SATA. The NVMe 2.4 specifications were released August 4, 2026. The standard supports multiple form factors and transports, so the label “NVMe” alone does not establish a drive’s capacity, endurance, thermal behavior, or compatibility. See the NVM Express specifications.

An NVMe SSD may help when a compatible server’s real workload is waiting on storage—for example, uncached requests that frequently read data. It is less likely to affect requests already served from a cache, because those requests may not need to reach the backing drive. This is an architectural distinction, not a measured speedup for any particular website.
Match the measurement to the workload
Storage performance is not one number. Latency describes how long an I/O takes; IOPS counts operations per second; throughput measures data transferred over time. Small random reads may be better understood through latency and IOPS than peak sequential throughput. Record the workload’s I/O sizes and access pattern, then use a benchmark that resembles them.

Account for the operating system’s page cache, which keeps file data and metadata in memory. A test that reads cached data can reflect memory performance rather than the underlying device. NVIDIA’s storage benchmarking guide notes that configuration matters and recommends bypassing page cache when the goal is to measure storage itself.

Check fit before changing hardware
Confirm the server supports the drive’s interface and form factor, and consider capacity, endurance, thermal characteristics, and total cost alongside performance. A product-family claim is not a compatibility guarantee: for example, HPE describes its read-intensive NVMe SSDs as designed for select PCIe Gen4 servers and lists web servers and read caching among possible workloads. That does not show that a given drive fits a reader’s server or will improve every site: HPE NVMe SSD information.

Which cache layer reduces which work?
“Caching” covers several mechanisms. Choose the layer based on what is repeated and where the repeated work occurs. Browser and CDN caches can reduce repeat network fetches; server-side caches can avoid repeated origin work, database queries, or page rendering. Operating-system page cache is different: it caches file data in memory and can affect storage measurements rather than HTTP delivery policy.
| Cache layer | What it reuses | Where the copy is used | Typical benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser | Static assets such as images, stylesheets, and JavaScript | The visitor’s browser | Fewer repeat downloads for returning visitors |
| CDN | Static assets or cacheable responses | An edge location closer to the visitor | Less fetching from the origin and potentially shorter delivery paths |
| Server-side page or reverse-proxy | Previously generated responses | A proxy or server in front of the application | Less repeated application processing for cacheable requests |
| Application object or query | Objects, query results, or rendered-page data | Application or data layer | Fewer repeated computations or database reads |
| Operating-system page cache | File data and metadata | Main memory on the host | Can serve repeated file access from memory rather than the storage device |
Static assets are files such as images, stylesheets, and JavaScript that are not generated dynamically for every request or change infrequently. A browser or CDN can reuse them rather than fetch each copy from the origin. Server-side page and data caches address a different kind of repetition. Google’s content-driven application guidance describes caching as a way to improve performance, reduce server load, and minimize latency.

Keep cached content fresh
A cache is useful only if its freshness rules match how the content changes. Set explicit HTTP policy with Cache-Control. For a cached representation that may have changed, validators such as ETag and Last-Modified let a client or intermediary revalidate it. For assets that change, fingerprinted or versioned URLs give a new version a new address; unchanged files can retain long-lived caching while the updated asset is fetched under its new URL.

A December 9, 2024 Google Search Central post reported that about 0.026% of fetches by Google’s crawling infrastructure were cacheable roughly ten years earlier, compared with 0.017% at the time of publication. Those figures concern Google’s own crawl fetches, not the share of cacheable requests on ordinary websites or in browsers: Google’s crawling infrastructure in December 2024.
Quick Recap
Diagnose before upgrading or adding a cache
- Measure the page first. Choose representative pages and conditions. Separate network and request latency, server processing, data access, and asset delivery rather than treating total load time as a storage measurement.
- Check the user-facing loading result. Google’s frontend guidance identifies Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) as a loading metric and gives 2.5 seconds as its recommended threshold. The cited guide was last updated July 10, 2024; check current Core Web Vitals guidance before treating that number as the live threshold. It does not establish that any NVMe drive or cache configuration will achieve it: Defining Core Web Vitals thresholds.
- Find repeated work. Determine whether visitors repeatedly download the same assets, the origin regenerates the same responses, the application repeats queries, or the workload is waiting on uncached storage reads. Match the cache layer to the repeated work.
- Measure storage with a representative test. Record latency, IOPS, and throughput with realistic I/O sizes and access patterns. Account for filesystem and operating-system page caching; bypass page cache when the goal is to measure the device itself.
- Change one relevant layer and verify. Compare the same user-facing and system measurements after a cache-policy or hardware change. Check cache freshness as well as performance, and account for resource use and cost.
Choose the fix the evidence supports
- If repeat asset downloads or long delivery paths dominate, investigate browser and CDN caching for suitable static assets.
- If repeated rendering, queries, or origin responses dominate, consider page, object, or query caching, with freshness and invalidation rules appropriate to the content.
- If representative measurements show storage I/O is holding up uncached work, assess a compatible NVMe SSD against latency, IOPS, throughput, capacity, endurance, and cost.
- If the slow part is network latency, server processing, or client-side loading, neither an NVMe upgrade nor a cache aimed at unrelated work is a direct fix.
