A faster NVMe SSD can make a storage-limited task faster, but its advertised sequential speed does not tell you whether storage is holding back your PC. The useful question is not “How fast is this drive?” but “Which part of the task is slow, and would faster storage change it?”
Why a faster drive may not make a PC feel faster
An SSD’s headline sequential read or write rate describes how quickly it can move large, continuous blocks of data in a suitable test. Many everyday tasks do not behave like that test. They may involve small or scattered requests, computation after a file is read, or work handled by another component.

Storage performance has several dimensions. Throughput is the rate at which data moves; IOPS measures input/output operations per second; latency is the time an operation takes. NVIDIA’s Benchmarking and Configuration Guide treats these as distinct measures and notes that expected performance depends on specifications and configuration together. A high sequential-throughput result alone cannot predict responsiveness or total task time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMicrosoft says NVMe SSDs offer greater command queue depths, more efficient interrupt processing, and greater efficiency for 4 KB commands. It identifies heavy simultaneous I/O as a particularly relevant workload. Those strengths can matter when software generates enough suitable requests; they do not guarantee that every desktop activity will become faster. See Microsoft’s Server Hardware Performance Considerations.

Diagnose the task before choosing an upgrade
- Name the task. Be specific: starting an application, opening a large project, copying files, loading a game level, or exporting a video can stress different parts of a PC.
- Observe the stage that is slow. Use the operating system’s resource monitors or the application’s own timing and diagnostics while repeating the task. Look at storage activity and response behavior alongside CPU, GPU, memory, and network activity when those components are involved.
- Compare the workload with the storage path. Consider whether the task is issuing enough storage work to benefit from higher throughput, more IOPS, or lower latency. Also account for the configured interface and the software’s handling of requests and data after storage reads.
- Decide whether changing storage could affect that stage. If the delay occurs after data has been read, or another stage is doing the limiting work, a faster SSD may not change the end-to-end time. Treat that as a diagnosis to verify with measurements, not an assumption about any particular PC.
A benchmark is evidence about its stated hardware, workload, and software—not a universal forecast. For a useful comparison, check what was measured, the test conditions, and whether the application and configuration resemble yours.
Why gaming gains depend on the software pipeline
Loading game assets is not simply a matter of reading a file as fast as possible. Microsoft’s DirectStorage materials describe a pipeline in which request overhead, batching, decompression, staging-buffer choices, and delivery of data to the GPU can all affect results. The game must use the relevant capabilities for faster storage to influence that pipeline. Microsoft’s June 2021 DirectStorage announcement and its current DirectStorage developer guidance explain those considerations.

- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
The 2021 announcement gives a historical, illustrative calculation: a drive reading at 2.4 GB/s with 64 KB blocks would need more than 35,000 I/O requests per second to saturate that bandwidth. This is an example of the request rate needed under those stated assumptions, not a universal game benchmark or a current performance promise.
A bounded example shows why test results need context. PCWorld reported that, in one Forspoken scene on its tested Windows 11 desktop, a Samsung 860 EVO SATA SSD took 7.4 seconds and an MSI M480 PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive took 1.9 seconds. Those figures belong to that publication’s system, game scene, and test conditions; they do not predict the result on another PC. The report also cautioned that DirectStorage would have little impact on most existing games. Read its test report for the conditions behind the comparison.

Check compatibility and the reason for buying
Before buying an M.2 NVMe SSD, confirm that the computer supports both the physical format and the interface. M.2 describes a form factor; it does not by itself establish that a system accepts an NVMe drive. Check the device’s documentation for supported drive type, PCIe generation and lanes, physical clearance, and capacity limits. Microsoft’s overview of SSD, HDD, and storage types explains the distinctions between common storage types. Compatibility for a particular computer must come from that computer’s specifications.
Then identify whether you need more capacity or faster workload-relevant performance. Compare compatible options on capacity, performance measures that fit your task, and current price. A larger drive can solve a space problem without changing a task’s speed; a faster drive is useful only when the relevant workload and system can take advantage of it.
