NVIDIA is still updating SHIELD TV more than a decade after the first model launched in 2015. In a January 2026 interview, senior vice president of hardware engineering Andrew Bell said NVIDIA intends to support SHIELD “for as long as we shall live,” while also saying the company continues to explore new device concepts. That is a strong longevity statement—not a launch announcement for a SHIELD TV successor.
The 10-year milestone itself was reached in 2025. In 2026, the practical question is what “support” delivers, how old the platform now is, and whether it still makes sense to buy one.
What NVIDIA actually said
Bell’s comments, reported by TechRadar and PC Gamer, amount to two separate messages:
- NVIDIA does not intend to stop sending SHIELD updates “any time soon.”
- A new SHIELD remains possible if the company finds a compelling idea, but no product, date, processor, operating system or price was announced.
That distinction matters. NVIDIA is reiterating a support philosophy, not confirming “SHIELD TV 2.”

What continued support means in 2026
NVIDIA’s current update page lists SHIELD Experience Upgrade 9.2.4, including security patches dated January 2026. The release also includes fixes for Disney+ playback, an Xbox remote reconnecting after sleep, HDMI-CEC wake crashes, Bluetooth remote disconnections and a settings-page crash. The details are documented at NVIDIA’s SHIELD software-update page.
In practice, ongoing support can include:
- Firmware and security updates.
- Bug fixes for playback, remotes, Bluetooth and HDMI-CEC.
- Accessibility and system improvements.
- Continued operation of NVIDIA’s SHIELD and GeForce NOW software.
- Compatibility work for major streaming apps, subject to each provider’s own requirements.
It does not guarantee a new major Android release, new decoding hardware, HDMI 2.1, newer wireless standards or permanent compatibility with every future app. NVIDIA’s current product page still describes SHIELD as Android 11 powered by Android TV, while the 9.2.4 notes emphasize maintenance rather than a new Android base.
Which SHIELD models are covered?
NVIDIA has said that all SHIELD TV models continue to receive software updates and support. The family includes the 2015 SHIELD Android TV, 2017 SHIELD TV models, and the 2019 SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro. Support does not mean every new function works identically on every generation.
| Model group | Relevant differences |
|---|---|
| SHIELD TV (tube design) | Uses microSD expansion and is aimed at compact streaming and gaming setups. |
| SHIELD TV Pro | Includes USB expansion and supports Plex Media Server use, making it the stronger local-media configuration. |
| Older 2015 and 2017 models | Remain part of the supported family, but hardware-specific features and performance can differ from 2019 models. |
The current SHIELD specification lists a Tegra X1+ processor with a 256-core NVIDIA GPU, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, microSD expansion, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0b and Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). NVIDIA’s specifications are available at the official SHIELD TV product page.

Why SHIELD still matters to enthusiasts
SHIELD’s appeal is not simply that it receives patches. It occupies a premium niche between inexpensive streaming sticks and more specialized home-theater or gaming hardware.
Home-theater playback
NVIDIA advertises Dolby Vision HDR, HDR10, Dolby Atmos support, 4K HDR playback at up to 60 frames per second for supported formats, and AI-enhanced upscaling. Gigabit Ethernet is useful for high-bitrate local files and installations where wired networking is preferable to Wi-Fi.
Local media and Plex
Expandable storage and Android TV app access make SHIELD attractive to Plex users and people with their own media libraries. The Pro model’s USB ports and Plex Media Server capability are especially relevant for a household that wants the box to serve media rather than only stream it.

Cloud gaming
SHIELD integrates with GeForce NOW. NVIDIA highlights up to 4K/60-fps streaming on SHIELD with the appropriate Ultimate membership, display, network, controller and supported game. That is a cloud-service capability, not evidence that the box performs modern PC games locally.

The platform retains Chromecast support and a feature-rich remote with backlighting, programmable controls, IR control, Bluetooth and a remote-finding function. Those conveniences, plus access to Android TV apps, remain more substantial than what many low-cost sticks provide.
What has not changed—and what limits SHIELD in 2026
The current hardware design dates to 2019, and the listed operating system is still Android 11. The official specifications do not advertise AV1 decoding, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 or newer gaming-display features. Their absence from the specification is not proof NVIDIA can never add a software feature, but it is a reason not to treat SHIELD as technically current.
- Third-party streaming services control their own app, resolution and HDR support. A firmware update cannot guarantee that a provider will retain every feature.
- GeForce NOW quality depends on membership tier, broadband quality, latency, controller, display and game support.
- Subscriptions such as Netflix, Disney+ and GeForce NOW are not included with the hardware.
- Buyers paying a premium for older hardware should be comfortable prioritizing SHIELD’s specific strengths over newer platform features.
Availability and current prices
NVIDIA’s U.S. overview page has shown list prices of $149.99 for SHIELD TV and $199.99 for SHIELD TV Pro; these are U.S. prices and can change. In July 2026, TechRadar reported that the $149 model was out of stock through NVIDIA’s official channels and that NVIDIA had not confirmed whether it would return. The Pro remained the model NVIDIA continued to sell at that time. Check NVIDIA’s official SHIELD page for current availability.
Is a new SHIELD coming?
Unknown. Bell said NVIDIA keeps experimenting with SHIELD concepts and could build new hardware if it finds something compelling. There is no announced model name, launch window, specification sheet or price. “A new SHIELD may happen” is therefore an attributed possibility, not a product roadmap or leak.

Practical fixes for common problems
Unwanted TV wake or sleep
SHIELD can send HDMI-CEC commands to connected equipment. To change related behavior, go to Settings → Device Preferences → Display & Sound → Power Control. NVIDIA specifically documents disabling Sleep SHIELD when TV input changes when input switching causes unwanted sleep behavior. See the SHIELD TV FAQ.
Dolby Vision problems
Check that the television, receiver or soundbar supports Dolby Vision, that the 4K chain supports HDCP 2.2, and that the HDMI cables are Certified High Speed or Dolby Vision-compatible. Passing through an incompatible receiver can prevent Dolby Vision even when the television supports it.

Storage expansion
The tube SHIELD supports UHS Class 1 or faster microSD cards. SHIELD TV Pro supports USB flash drives and hard drives. To adopt removable storage for apps, use Settings → Device Preferences → Storage → Select the drive → Set up as internal storage. A NAS can also be accessed over the network.
Streaming quality problems
Resolution and HDR depend on the app provider, subscription tier, display, receiver, cable, bandwidth and app support. If one service loses 4K or Dolby Vision, updating SHIELD may not restore it; the provider controls that feature.
Who should buy SHIELD TV now?
| Reader situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Existing owner with a working device | Keep it. Recent firmware activity and NVIDIA’s stated commitment justify continued use. |
| Plex or local-media enthusiast | Still a strong fit, especially the Pro for USB storage and Plex Media Server. |
| GeForce NOW user | Worth considering when wired networking, controller support and SHIELD integration matter. |
| Home-theater user needing Dolby formats and Ethernet | SHIELD remains compelling if its older platform is acceptable. |
| Casual Netflix or YouTube viewer | A cheaper Google TV, Roku or Fire TV device is likely better value. |
| Buyer seeking the newest platform or HDMI 2.1 | Look elsewhere; SHIELD’s official specifications remain based on older hardware. |
| Buyer waiting specifically for a successor | Waiting is reasonable, but speculative because NVIDIA has made no launch commitment. |
For alternatives, Google TV Streamer (official page) suits buyers wanting a newer Google TV experience; Apple TV 4K (official page) is stronger in Apple households; Roku’s players (official page) target simple mainstream streaming; and Fire TV (official page) fits Alexa households and lower-cost setups. None duplicates SHIELD’s exact combination of Android flexibility, local-media features, storage and GeForce NOW integration.
Verdict
NVIDIA’s decade-plus support record is real and unusually valuable: SHIELD Experience 9.2.4 and January 2026 security patches show active maintenance, not abandonment. But maintenance is not the same as a modern platform refresh. SHIELD remains a sensible purchase for users who specifically need Plex, expandable storage, Dolby home-theater features, Gigabit Ethernet or GeForce NOW. For ordinary streaming, newer and cheaper devices offer a more current foundation. A successor is possible, but until NVIDIA announces one, it should not influence a purchase as if it were confirmed.
