To move through a video one frame at a time in VLC Media Player, pause the video and press E. Press E repeatedly to advance through successive decoded frames, then press Space to resume playback.
These instructions apply to VLC’s desktop editions for Windows, macOS, and Linux, not automatically to VLC Mobile. VLC 3.0 source defines E as the default Next frame hotkey (VLC hotkey definition).
Advance a video one frame at a time
- Open the video in VLC.
- Press Space or click the pause button.
- Click the video area once so VLC has keyboard focus.
- Press E once to display the next decoded video frame.
- Press E again for each following frame. Individual presses are more precise than holding the key.
- Press Space when you want normal playback again.
The underlying LibVLC API also provides libvlc_media_player_next_frame, documented as displaying the next frame “if supported” (LibVLC media-player header). Unusual codecs, damaged files, or unsupported interfaces may therefore behave differently.
If pressing E does nothing
- Give VLC focus. Click the video window, not a playlist, search field, or another application.
- Pause first. Press Space, then try E.
- Check your keyboard layout. Use the key that produces the letter E in your active layout.
- Verify the assignment. Open Tools → Preferences, select Hotkeys, and find Next frame. Confirm that it is assigned to E, or assign another key, save, and restart VLC if prompted. VLC’s labels can vary slightly between operating systems (Preferences and Hotkeys documentation).
- Test a local file. Live streams, network sources, and media whose duration is unknown may not provide reliable stepping.
- Reset preferences as a last resort. Use Tools → Preferences → Reset Preferences, then restart VLC (official settings documentation).
Find a frame-step control in the interface
VLC can show an additional toolbar through View → Advanced Controls, and toolbar items can be rearranged with Tools → Customize Interface (official interface documentation). The exact controls differ by version and interface, so do not assume that every build exposes a visible frame-step button. If your build offers one, add it to the toolbar and use it instead of the keyboard.

Jump close to the moment before stepping
- Choose Playback → Jump to Specific Time.
- Enter an approximate position in
hh:mm:ssformat. - Confirm the jump, pause the video, and press E repeatedly.
The entered time must be within the media’s duration (VLC playback documentation). This is timestamp seeking, not frame-number navigation: keyframes, codec structure, timestamps, and variable frame rate can affect the exact position reached.
Save the frame you are viewing
When the desired image is displayed, choose Video → Snapshot (VLC desktop menu documentation). A snapshot saves VLC’s rendered output. It is not necessarily an untouched extraction of the original encoded frame, so use a dedicated extraction tool when source-accurate output or batch export matters.

Why stepping can be inaccurate or unreliable
Variable-frame-rate video
Frames in variable-frame-rate footage are not separated by a constant number of milliseconds. “One frame” therefore does not equal a fixed 1/24, 1/30, or 1/60 second, and a time-based seek may land near rather than exactly on a requested frame.
Interlaced material
Sports, broadcast, and older footage may be interlaced. VLC can display a deinterlaced picture, while the source image consists of two fields. The displayed picture is not always equivalent to one progressive camera frame.

Streams, incomplete files, and difficult codecs
A fully downloaded local file is the best test case. Live or network media may lack a known duration and may not support normal seeking or stepping (VLC interface documentation). Incomplete, damaged, or difficult-to-decode files can also stutter, show a black image, or stop responding.
End of the file
At the final frame, additional presses may produce no visible change or version-specific glitches. Stop and reopen the file rather than repeatedly stepping beyond the end.

Decoder and video-output problems
If VLC freezes or stutters, press Space, stop and reopen the file, try a local copy, and test another video. Changing hardware-accelerated decoding or the video-output module can be a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. Reset preferences if the issue began after configuration changes.

VLC’s dependable built-in workflow is advancing to the next frame. Do not rely on a universal default previous-frame shortcut. To inspect an earlier image, jump to a slightly earlier time and step forward again, or reopen the media and repeat the forward stepping. A dedicated video editor or analysis tool is more appropriate when reverse stepping is essential.

The documented shortcut and menu paths above are for VLC desktop. VideoLAN maintains separate documentation for desktop, Android, and iOS applications (VLC documentation home), and the touch-oriented mobile apps should not be assumed to accept the desktop E shortcut.
