NVIDIA is reportedly discussing glass-core substrates with semiconductor suppliers, but there is no confirmed NVIDIA adoption decision, named product, or production date. The reported 2028 timing is tentative. The proposal concerns the package foundation beneath and around chip dies—not an AI processor made of glass.
What the report says—and what it does not confirm
In an October 1, 2026 report, Fudzilla cited Taiwan’s Commercial Times for claims that NVIDIA is discussing glass substrates with suppliers, including German equipment maker SCHMID. The article also cited South Korean reporting that NVIDIA had asked substrate makers in Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea to complete development within two years. Its suggestion that production could begin as early as 2028 is a reported target, not a confirmed schedule. The underlying reports have not been independently verified here. Fudzilla’s report
No direct NVIDIA statement confirming glass-core substrate adoption has been identified. NVIDIA’s 2026 announcement with Corning discussed advanced optical technologies; it is not confirmation of glass-core chip packaging. NVIDIA’s Corning announcement
What a glass-core substrate would do
A substrate is the structural and electrical foundation that connects dies and other components inside an advanced package. In a chiplet package, multiple dies are assembled together and linked through that package structure. A glass-core design would use glass in the substrate’s core; it would not replace silicon in the processor dies themselves.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Intel’s case for glass is that its mechanical stability, flatness, and dimensional control could help make larger system-in-package assemblies and support denser interconnects. The potential relevance is to package construction and scaling—not a demonstrated NVIDIA improvement in chip speed, power use, or performance. Intel’s glass-substrate announcement
Potential benefits and the trade-offs
| Area | Why glass is being considered | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Flatness and dimensional stability | A flatter, more stable core may help control patterning and alignment in large packages. | Intel described these as properties of its glass-substrate technology; they are not verified outcomes for an NVIDIA package. Intel |
| Package size and interconnects | The material is being developed for larger, more complex assemblies and potentially denser chiplet connections. | Intel said glass offered “50% less pattern distortion” and that a “10x increase in interconnect density is possible.” These are Intel claims published in 2023, not independent results or predicted NVIDIA gains. Intel |
| Thermal and electrical behavior | Material properties may offer advantages in advanced package designs. | That rationale does not establish better chip-level speed or efficiency for a future NVIDIA product. |
| Manufacturing readiness | Suppliers are developing glass cores and through-glass vias (TGVs), which conduct connections through the glass. | The cited supplier activity includes demonstrations, pilot lines, and customer validation; yield, via metallization, and qualification remain reported challenges. Fudzilla’s report |
Intel’s 2023 statement that it was “on track to deliver complete glass substrate solutions to the market in the second half of this decade” was Intel’s roadmap, not a current launch confirmation or an NVIDIA timeline. Intel’s announcement

Where supplier development stands
Fudzilla reported that AUO and Corning demonstrated a 510 × 515 mm glass-core substrate at SEMICON Taiwan 2026, combining Corning glass with AUO redistribution-layer technology. It also said AUO was developing pilot lines for TGVs, redistribution layers, and glass cores. The same report said Innolux was developing TGV technology and validating products with customers using a 620 × 670 mm panel format. These are secondary-reported development details, not confirmation that the materials have passed qualification or entered volume production. Fudzilla’s report
Panel-level packaging is related but distinct: it concerns building packages across larger panels rather than the substrate material alone. A 2026 Tom’s Hardware industry analysis said high-end AI and HPC panel-level packaging remained in development and might be viable in the late 2020s at the earliest; that is an estimate, not a fixed industry date. How this fits NVIDIA’s disclosed packaging baseline
NVIDIA’s FY2025 Form 10-K says the company uses TSMC’s CoWoS packaging technology. It names TSMC and Samsung as wafer foundries and Hon Hai, Wistron, and Fabrinet as assembly, testing, and packaging contractors. That filing establishes a disclosed baseline; it does not reveal whether NVIDIA has since evaluated a different substrate material. NVIDIA’s SEC filings

What to watch next
- A direct NVIDIA confirmation naming glass-core substrates or a specific package would move the story beyond supplier-discussion reporting.
- Supplier progress from pilot development to customer qualification and volume production would clarify manufacturing readiness.
- A dated product or production announcement would be needed to treat the reported 2028 target as a real schedule.
