Yes—there was a credible wave of RTX 40-series instability reports around NVIDIA’s R570 Windows drivers, but “many” is not a measured failure rate. Users described black screens, BSODs, freezes, stutter and game crashes after the 572.16-era releases. The pattern was concentrated in particular combinations such as DLSS Frame Generation with G-SYNC/VRR, multi-monitor setups and laptop hybrid graphics. NVIDIA documented individual bugs and fixes, but the public release notes do not establish one universal RTX 40 defect or a universal fix.

What R570 and 572.xx actually mean

R570 is NVIDIA’s driver branch name. Linux packages commonly use numbers such as 570.xx, while related Windows packages often use 572.xx and, for some product families, 573.xx. Those numbers do not identify one interchangeable package.

  • GeForce Game Ready and Studio: consumer Windows drivers for GeForce cards.
  • RTX Enterprise: professional drivers aimed at certified applications and longer-term stability.
  • Linux, Windows and enterprise packages: each has its own support model and versioning details.

NVIDIA describes its enterprise production branch as a stability- and certification-focused line. An enterprise R570 release is therefore not automatically a suitable replacement for a GeForce driver. Always match the operating system, GPU product family and driver package.

NVIDIA’s data-center notes also show why branch numbers can be confusing: related R570 releases use different numbering conventions across platforms. NVIDIA’s R570 documentation explains that distinction.

When the complaints began

The key starting point was Windows GeForce driver 572.16 in January 2025, which added RTX 50-series support. Tom’s Hardware reported that RTX 40- and RTX 30-series complaints were traceable to that transition and continued through later 572.xx releases, including 572.47, 572.60 and 572.83. The coverage cited a large user-compiled complaint thread, not a controlled incident survey. Tom’s Hardware’s report is therefore evidence of a substantial anecdotal pattern, not a percentage of all RTX 40 owners.

What RTX 40 owners reported

Display failures

  • Black screens when launching a game or waking a monitor.
  • Flicker, loss of one display or a blank screen until Windows loads.
  • Problems with HDMI, DisplayPort, high-refresh-rate panels and multiple monitors.

System crashes

  • Driver timeouts and resets.
  • Crash-to-desktop, complete freezes, BSODs and forced reboots.

Performance and frame pacing

  • Stutter despite normal average FPS.
  • Uneven frame delivery, lower GPU utilization and degraded performance.
  • Changed G-SYNC or other VRR behavior after an update.

Application-specific failures

Reports involved games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, God of War Ragnarök and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, as well as VR, OpenGL, Adobe Substance 3D Sampler and professional OptiX workloads. These reports do not show that every title or card was affected.

Which cards and systems appeared in reports?

Community reports and secondary coverage mentioned desktop RTX 4090, 4080, 4080 Super, 4070 Ti, 4070 Ti Super, 4070 Super and 4070 cards. Laptop reports included RTX 4080 Laptop GPU and RTX 4090 Laptop GPU systems. The lists show where complaints appeared, not a representative failure rate by model. Laptop diagnosis is more complicated because OEM drivers, hybrid-GPU switching, external-display routing, docking firmware and AC/battery power modes add variables. Secondary coverage summarizes several of those reports.

Configurations that may expose the problem

The most frequently described trigger was DLSS Frame Generation combined with G-SYNC or another VRR mode. Other recurring combinations included:

  • GPU undervolts, overclocks, custom voltage curves or aggressive fan utilities.
  • Older GPU firmware, NVIDIA App profiles or third-party tuning tools.
  • A Windows update, game patch or BIOS change occurring at the same time as the driver update.

Disabling Frame Generation or G-SYNC, testing one monitor or lowering refresh rate helped some users, according to reported experiences. Those are diagnostic workarounds, not guaranteed fixes.

What NVIDIA officially documented

NVIDIA’s release notes distinguish specific fixed or open issues from broad community reports. The following table keeps those evidence streams separate.

Driver What the public record supports
572.16 Early R570 Windows release associated with the beginning of the complaint wave. NVIDIA listed individual application and platform issues, but did not announce a universal RTX 40 instability defect. Release page
572.47 Release history and community tracking identify fixes for some display-wake and RTX 50 blank-screen problems. It should not be treated as a complete RTX 40 fix.
572.60 NVIDIA documented, among other items, an Adobe Substance 3D Sampler crash associated with 572.16 and several RTX 50 display issues. Release page
572.83 NVIDIA listed additional fixed and open issues, including an OptiX/VRED entry, while community reports of RTX 40 black screens and BSODs continued. Release page
573.96 NVIDIA’s enterprise history lists R570 U12 on January 8, 2026. That entry is for RTX Enterprise products and is not a recommendation for consumer GeForce RTX 40 cards. Driver history

Because NVIDIA’s notes do not name one universal RTX 40 BSOD or black-screen fix, it is inaccurate to say that version 572.60 or 572.83 “fixed the problem” in general.

How to determine whether the driver is responsible

  1. Record the environment. Note the exact driver version, GPU model, Windows build, monitor count and refresh rates, G-SYNC/VRR state, Frame Generation setting and the affected application.
  2. Compare timing. A failure that starts immediately after an update, then disappears after rollback, supports a driver-regression hypothesis. It is not conclusive proof.
  3. Return hardware to stock. Temporarily remove GPU overclocks, undervolts, custom voltage curves and third-party profile utilities.
  4. Isolate features. Test without Frame Generation, G-SYNC/VRR, overlays, mods and extra monitors. Try a lower refresh rate and reproduce the same workload.
  5. Reinstall cleanly. Use NVIDIA’s installer clean-install option. If that fails, an established display-driver cleanup utility in Windows Safe Mode can be an optional next step; it is not mandatory for every update.
  6. Roll back safely. Download an official driver for the exact GPU and operating system. Avoid modified INF packages and unofficial mirrors.
  7. Check other causes. Review Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer, test system memory, inspect PSU capacity and power-cable seating, monitor GPU and hotspot temperatures, and check motherboard BIOS, GPU firmware, PCIe seating and cable condition.

When to roll back—and when not to

Rollback is reasonable when

  • Instability began directly after an R570/572.xx installation.
  • The same workload was stable on an earlier official driver.
  • The problem disappears after reverting.
  • You do not need a newer game profile, feature or compatibility fix.

Staying current may be safer when

  • The newer package contains a security fix relevant to your system.
  • You need support for a new game, application or Windows release.
  • The crash also occurs on older driver branches.

Stability and security are separate decisions. NVIDIA’s July 2025 bulletin lists affected R570 versions and required updates by product family and operating system; an older driver can be more stable for one workload while still carrying known vulnerabilities. Read the security bulletin.

Desktop, laptop and professional-use differences

Laptop owners should compare NVIDIA’s generic package with the notebook manufacturer’s validated driver, particularly when an external monitor, dock, hybrid graphics or performance-mode switch is involved. For professional applications, an RTX Enterprise branch may offer certification and longer support, but it is not a universal substitute for a GeForce Game Ready or Studio package.

When the driver is no longer the leading suspect

If crashes continue across several known-good driver branches after the GPU is returned to stock, investigate hardware, firmware, memory, power delivery, thermals and the operating system rather than repeatedly rolling back. Do not flash a BIOS without a confirmed model-specific reason, use registry TDR-delay edits as a first-line cure, permanently disable security features or conclude that the GPU is defective solely because one driver produced a black screen.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: R570/572.xx instability on some RTX 40 systems was a credible regression pattern, especially around Frame Generation, G-SYNC/VRR, multi-monitor and hybrid-laptop configurations. The available evidence does not establish how many owners were affected, prove one cause for every crash or show that NVIDIA issued a universal fix. Use timing, feature isolation, stock hardware testing and an official rollback to diagnose it, while weighing security and compatibility before staying on an older driver.
