There is no reliable single ranking of Nvidia GPUs and Chinese AI accelerators. Compare complete systems on the same model, precision, input and output lengths, batch or concurrency level, and latency or throughput target—then weigh software migration, scaling, total cost, and whether the exact system is actually available where you operate.
What “Chinese AI chips” means in this comparison
“Chinese AI chips” is a broad category, not one product family with uniform performance or software. Huawei Ascend is the best-documented Chinese comparison in the reviewed evidence, so it is the main example here. Conclusions about Ascend should not be generalized to every Chinese accelerator or domestic vendor.

Also distinguish a chip from the system that uses it. A data-center accelerator’s usefulness depends on more than its arithmetic capability: memory capacity and bandwidth, the links between accelerators, server and network topology, software scheduling, and the number of devices assigned to a job can all affect results. For large training and inference workloads, compare the full system and configuration rather than treating a chip specification as a production result.
How to compare performance fairly
Start with the job you need to run, not a vendor’s peak-performance figure. A useful comparison holds the workload and target constant while measuring each platform’s actual output. Training throughput, inference throughput, and response latency are different outcomes; a system that suits one objective may not suit another.

Match the workload before comparing numbers
- Model and task: Use the same model and workload, including the same relevant operators and serving or training behavior.
- Precision: Record the precision mode used on each system. A result measured at one precision is not automatically comparable with a result at another.
- Input and output: For inference, state prompt or context length and generated output length. For training, specify the task and workload configuration.
- Batching and concurrency: Record batch size or concurrent requests. These choices can change both throughput and latency.
- Success target: Decide whether you need maximum throughput, a defined response-time target, or a balance. Report the actual latency alongside throughput when both matter.
- System and software: State accelerator count, memory and interconnect configuration where available, and the software versions and settings used.
A comparison is weak if it changes several of these variables at once. For example, a headline token rate without its model, precision, input and output lengths, system size, and measurement conditions cannot tell you how a platform will perform on your service. For a fair test, also keep the success criterion constant: if one run counts requests that meet a latency limit and the other reports unconstrained peak throughput, the numbers answer different questions.
Use benchmark results carefully
MLPerf results can provide a useful reference when the same benchmark task and scenario are represented. NVIDIA’s benchmark page presents system-level results and describes platform co-design; inspect the underlying submission details and scenario rather than treating a vendor summary as a direct answer to your own deployment question. The page lists Training v5.0, v5.1, and v6.0 results retrieved on June 16, 2026. That establishes what the page reports, not a matched comparison with every Chinese accelerator. NVIDIA’s MLPerf benchmark materials
A recognized benchmark and a production proof of concept serve different purposes. A benchmark can help establish performance within its published task and scenario; a proof of concept tests whether your model, software versions, and deployment target behave as needed. Neither should be silently substituted for the other. When reading a submission, check the system size and scenario as well as the reported result, and avoid combining figures from different benchmark versions or vendor-selected workloads into a single ranking.

The reviewed evidence does not establish a current, independently matched performance result for a specific Chinese accelerator versus a specific current Nvidia system on the same workload. As a result, it does not support a universal winner, a general performance ratio, or a claim of parity.
Interpret headline figures as claims with a scope
In a September 2025 keynote, Huawei attributed 4.91 million tokens per second in training throughput to its planned Atlas 950 SuperPoD and compared it with Atlas 900 A3. The same keynote attributed 19.6 million tokens per second in inference throughput to Atlas 950 SuperPoD with FP4 support. These are Huawei-stated figures for a named system and roadmap context, not independently verified, workload-matched results against an Nvidia system. The keynote does not make those figures a general per-chip performance measure. Huawei’s 2025 keynote
Huawei’s September 2026 keynote also described an annual Ascend generation cadence. That is the company’s stated roadmap direction, not a guarantee that a particular product will ship on a particular date or be orderable in a given market. Huawei’s 2026 keynote

How to run a workload-matched evaluation
A short proof of concept on the real application is more informative than a comparison assembled from unrelated peak figures. Use the same acceptance criteria on both platforms and preserve the configuration details so the results can be reviewed or repeated.
- Define the production job. Name the model and task, target precision, input and output lengths, expected concurrency or batch, and whether the priority is latency, throughput, or both.
- List the complete system. Record the number of accelerators, host and network configuration, memory details, and any scale-up or scale-out arrangement available for the test. If a value is not supplied, mark it as unknown rather than filling it in by assumption.
- Confirm software coverage first. Check the exact framework, model release, operators, kernels, precision modes, compiler/runtime, and serving or training components needed. A framework appearing in a support list does not prove that every feature used by your model is supported.
- Make each run comparable. Use the same model and data, workload parameters, success criteria, and measurement window. Document any platform-specific configuration changes that are required to get the workload running.
- Measure more than peak throughput. Capture the achieved throughput and latency for the chosen target, along with utilization and any failures or stability issues relevant to production. Do not compare a latency-focused run on one system with a throughput-focused run on another.
- Track engineering work. Record time spent on porting, operator or kernel changes, optimization, debugging, and operational changes. This effort is part of the cost of adopting a platform, even if it does not appear in a hardware quote.
- Estimate cost per useful output. Combine system or cloud charges with energy, cooling, networking, engineering, utilization, support, and lifecycle assumptions. State the assumptions; cited reports do not provide a current, independently matched total-cost figure for a buyer’s workload.
- Validate supply and support. Confirm the exact configuration, supplier, location, lead time, support terms, and any permissions or policy constraints that apply to your deployment.
Keep a test record that includes software versions and platform-specific settings. If the result depends on a particular compiler, serving release, or model implementation, that dependency belongs in the comparison: it affects whether the result can be reproduced and maintained. If the configuration changes between runs, record what changed and rerun the relevant baseline instead of treating the two outputs as directly equivalent.
This process separates a platform’s ability to run a workload from its ability to run that workload efficiently and economically in your environment. A successful demonstration is not by itself proof of production readiness: it should also establish the behavior and operational support you need.
Software support and the cost of moving from CUDA
Software is a major part of the comparison because an accelerator’s theoretical capability is useful only when the application can use it. Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem includes libraries and tooling that existing projects may rely on. Mitsui’s April 2026 analysis describes migration from CUDA-built development to other accelerators as involving code porting and performance optimization; it also notes that CUDA cannot be used with non-Nvidia GPUs. That does not mean every application is impossible to port, but it does mean migration should be treated as engineering work rather than a simple hardware substitution. Mitsui’s April 2026 analysis
For an Ascend evaluation, Huawei’s September 2026 keynote reported support for more than 90 third-party open-source projects and named PyTorch, Triton, vLLM, and veRL. This is a vendor-reported project count, not a standardized measure of compatibility, feature parity, production maturity, or performance. Ask about the specific versions and features your workload needs rather than relying on the count alone. Huawei’s 2026 keynote

- Does the exact model release run, including all operators and custom kernels it depends on?
- Which precision modes are supported for the relevant model path, and are they acceptable for the application?
- Are the required compiler, runtime, debugging, profiling, and serving tools available for the versions you plan to deploy?
- What code must change, and who will maintain platform-specific paths, tests, and deployment automation?
- Can the vendor or supplier provide production support for the precise configuration, not merely general framework coverage?
For teams estimating migration, separate “it runs” from “it runs well.” First verify that the model and required operators execute correctly. Then measure whether performance meets the target and what optimization is needed. Finally, account for maintaining tests and any platform-specific code as model and software versions change. A framework name in a support list answers none of those workload-specific questions by itself.

A 2026 arXiv preprint documents large-model inference engineering on a 16-device Ascend 910 system, including MoE and multimodal serving workloads. It can help illustrate that real deployment involves workload- and version-specific engineering, but its scope does not establish a universal performance ranking against Nvidia. Compare systems, not just accelerator specifications
System-level capacity and connectivity matter especially when a workload spans multiple accelerators. Include memory capacity and bandwidth, interconnect, accelerator count, networking, host topology, scheduling, and fault behavior in the evaluation. These factors can affect whether a large job fits, how efficiently it scales, and what configuration is needed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Huawei’s Atlas SuperPoD comparisons and future-system numbers are company statements. Keep projected aggregate system figures distinct from measured per-chip results, and do not describe them as independently established parity with an Nvidia platform. The 2025 keynote’s Atlas 950 claims are a useful example of why system size, workload, precision, and measurement conditions need to accompany a headline number. Huawei’s 2025 keynote
When suppliers provide specifications for a named system, compare those specifications with the complete configuration you can actually procure or access. A system with many accelerators is not directly comparable to a smaller configuration simply because both use a related chip family. Likewise, a system-level aggregate number should not be read as the performance of one accelerator. Ask for the accelerator count, memory and interconnect details, and workload conditions associated with the figure.
Availability, roadmap, and geographic limits
Availability is a procurement fact tied to a specific product, configuration, date, and country. A roadmap announcement is not proof of stock, confirmed delivery, local support, or permission to deploy. Mitsui’s April 2026 and MERICS’s July 2025 reports discuss policy changes and market context but do not provide live country-by-country inventory or a current legal determination for every buyer.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare total cost of useful output
Neither a lower quoted system price nor a higher advertised token rate alone establishes which platform costs less to operate. Use the same useful-output target—such as a defined amount of completed training or inference at an acceptable latency—and include the full deployment costs and utilization assumptions.
- Acquisition or access: Purchase price or cloud rates for the exact configuration and location.
- Infrastructure: Power, cooling, networking, and any supporting system requirements.
- Engineering: Porting, optimization, debugging, testing, and ongoing maintenance.
- Operations: Utilization, scheduling, support, reliability needs, and lifecycle planning.
Make the assumptions visible. A quoted system price does not account for how much useful work it completes, how often it is used, or the engineering required to keep a workload running. Conversely, a performance figure does not establish the buyer’s power, cooling, or support costs. No independently matched current total-cost or throughput-per-watt result for a specific workload is established here, so those figures need to come from a workload-matched evaluation and buyer-specific quotes.
Choose a comparison that fits the decision
| If your priority is… | Give the most weight to… | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping an existing CUDA application running | Current software fit and the work required to port or maintain dependencies. | A proof of concept using the actual model, operators, kernels, and toolchain. |
| Serving a defined inference workload | Latency and throughput at the same model, precision, context and output lengths, and concurrency. | Results with the exact serving stack and configuration, plus support for required versions. |
| Scaling a large training or inference job | Memory, accelerator count, interconnect, networking, and system behavior under the target workload. | Full-system configuration and workload-matched scaling results, not aggregate peak figures alone. |
| Planning procurement in a specific country | Orderability, lead time, cloud access, supplier support, and applicable policy constraints. | Confirmation for the exact SKU, destination, and deployment date. |
| Reducing cost per useful result | Measured output and latency alongside acquisition, infrastructure, engineering, utilization, and support costs. | A transparent cost model using buyer-specific quotes and stated assumptions. |
The right conclusion may differ by workload and buyer. If software migration is costly or the workload depends on CUDA-specific components, that is a material part of the comparison. If a Chinese system is under consideration, a representative evaluation and verified supply path are necessary before assuming it will replace an existing Nvidia deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do Chinese AI chips compare with Nvidia GPUs?
There is no supported single ranking. Compare a named system on the same model, precision, input and output lengths, batch or concurrency, latency or throughput target, and software versions. Current evidence does not establish an independently matched result for a specific Chinese accelerator against a current Nvidia system.
Best Value
Can Huawei Ascend replace Nvidia for my workload?
Possibly, but the answer depends on whether the exact model, operators, kernels, precision modes, and serving or training stack are supported and meet your performance and operational requirements. Test a representative workload and include porting, optimization, and support effort before treating Ascend as a drop-in replacement.
How much work does it take to move from CUDA to Ascend?
There is no universal estimate. Mitsui’s April 2026 analysis identifies code porting and performance optimization as migration needs. Custom kernels, operator coverage, toolchain requirements, testing, and maintenance can vary by application, so track the effort in a proof of concept rather than assuming framework-level support makes migration automatic.
Are Chinese AI accelerators available where I operate?
That depends on the exact SKU, configuration, supplier, country, date, and procurement or policy requirements. Huawei’s announced roadmap dates do not by themselves confirm that products are shipping or orderable. Verify inventory or cloud access, lead time, local support, and applicable permissions directly for your intended deployment.
Which platform is cheaper per token or per training run?
The reviewed evidence does not establish a current, independently matched total-cost or throughput-per-watt comparison. Calculate cost for the target workload using measured useful output and buyer-specific hardware or cloud quotes, including power, cooling, networking, utilization, engineering, support, and lifecycle assumptions.
The Bottom Line
Do not choose between Nvidia and Chinese AI accelerators from peak specifications or roadmap promises alone. Compare complete systems on your workload, measure performance and migration effort, calculate cost per useful output, and verify the exact configuration and supply path in your country. Huawei Ascend is a relevant example, but available results and claims do not establish a universal winner or a drop-in replacement for every CUDA workload.
