Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Super May Get 50% More VRAM

Short answer: the rumored GeForce RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Super could offer 24GB and 18GB of GDDR7 respectively—50% more capacity than the current RTX 5080 and RTX 5070. Neither card is an official Nvidia product, however. Nvidia’s current RTX 50-series catalog lists the RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti, 5070, 5060 Ti, 5060 and 5050, but no Super models. As of August 18, 2026, reports say the rumored launch may be on hold because of the cost or availability of 3GB GDDR7 memory.

What the 50% memory rumor actually means

The claim concerns Super-branded refreshes, not a new version of the already released RTX 5080 or RTX 5070. The arithmetic is straightforward:

Current card Official VRAM Rumored Super VRAM Increase
GeForce RTX 5070 12GB GDDR7 18GB GDDR7 50%
GeForce RTX 5080 16GB GDDR7 24GB GDDR7 50%

Nvidia announced the RTX 5070 at a $549 starting price and the RTX 5080 at $999. Those are launch MSRPs from Nvidia’s January 2025 announcement, not promised prices for hypothetical Super cards. Current US retail pricing can differ substantially.

Reported capacities come from leak coverage by PCGamesN, PCGamesN’s 5080/5070 Ti report and Tom’s Hardware. Nvidia has not confirmed the capacities, specifications or existence of either card.

Are the RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Super official?

No. Nvidia’s official product catalog and its Blackwell launch announcement cover the existing RTX 50-series models, not RTX 5080 Super or RTX 5070 Super cards. Treat every Super specification as a report from a leaker or a publication’s interpretation until Nvidia publishes a product page, announcement and availability date.

This distinction matters because earlier stories gave specific launch windows that have passed. The current story is an unconfirmed refresh reportedly affected by memory supply and pricing—not a scheduled Nvidia release.

Why 18GB and 24GB configurations are technically plausible

The rumored capacities fit the way a wider memory bus can be populated with 3GB GDDR7 packages:

  • A 192-bit interface could use six 3GB packages for 18GB.
  • A 256-bit interface could use eight 3GB packages for 24GB.

That makes the configurations technically credible, but memory-module feasibility is not product confirmation. VideoCardz reported in July 2026 that board partners may have cards or preparations in place while the launch was on hold over 3GB GDDR7 pricing. No replacement date was supplied to partners.

What specifications have been reported?

RTX 5070 Super

The most detailed leak, reported by PCGamesN, describes an alleged 18GB GDDR7 card with a 192-bit interface, 28Gbps memory and 672GB/s of theoretical bandwidth. It also mentions 6,400 CUDA cores, 50 RT cores, 200 Tensor cores and a 275W total graphics power target.

Those figures are not Nvidia specifications. If the 192-bit, 28Gbps configuration were accurate, the extra capacity would not by itself increase bandwidth beyond the reported 672GB/s. A game that already fits within 12GB might therefore see little or no frame-rate change from memory capacity alone.

RTX 5080 Super

Reports generally associate the RTX 5080 Super with 24GB, but they disagree about the rest of the design. Some coverage suggests faster GDDR7, with figures such as 32Gbps or 36Gbps mentioned; other reports focus mainly on the larger buffer. Core counts, power limits and clocks remain unsettled.

Do not treat a composite leak table as a final specification sheet. Reported details conflict on memory speed, CUDA cores, power, release order and whether a particular 24GB configuration belongs to the RTX 5080 Super or another rumored model.

When could the cards launch?

The rumored schedule has moved repeatedly:

  1. Initial reports pointed to late 2025.
  2. Later coverage moved the RTX 5070 Super toward early 2026.
  3. June 2026 reports still described a Super family as being planned.
  4. July 2026 reporting said the launch was on hold over 3GB GDDR7 pricing, with no new date.

As of August 18, 2026, “on hold” or “delayed” is more accurate than assigning a month. Nvidia has announced no launch event, MSRP or retail availability.

What extra VRAM would improve

More VRAM helps when a workload exceeds the existing card’s memory budget. Possible benefits include:

  • Higher-resolution textures at 4K;
  • Ray tracing or path tracing with larger scene data;
  • Texture-heavy mods and large asset packs;
  • Fewer stutters caused by asset streaming;
  • GPU rendering, video and 3D projects with larger scenes;
  • Local AI models that fit in 18GB or 24GB but not 12GB or 16GB.

PCGamesN cited VRAM saturation on an RTX 5070 in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle when full ray tracing was enabled. That is a workload-specific observation, not proof that every game requires more than 12GB. VRAM demand varies with resolution, texture quality, ray-tracing mode, game-engine behavior, mods, upscaling and application type.

Capacity is not shader throughput. Extra memory cannot turn a 5070-class GPU into a 5080-class GPU, and it will not automatically raise average FPS when the original card is not memory-limited.

How the rumored cards could fit different buyers

RTX 5070 Super

If the reported configuration is accurate, 18GB would target high-refresh 1440p gaming, less compromised 4K settings and users who are hitting the RTX 5070’s 12GB limit. It could also suit creators and local-AI users who need more capacity without moving to a flagship card. There is no reliable public performance data showing how much faster it would be.

RTX 5080 Super

A 24GB buffer would be most relevant to demanding 4K ray-traced gaming, high-resolution mods, GPU rendering and larger creative or AI workloads. The practical gain would depend on the final core configuration, memory speed, power target, drivers and price.

Should you buy an RTX 5070 or RTX 5080 now?

Buy an existing card when

  • You need a working GPU immediately for games or paid work.
  • Your current card is failing or clearly inadequate.
  • The price is reasonable for your local market and workload.
  • Your applications fit comfortably within 12GB on the RTX 5070 or 16GB on the RTX 5080.
  • Waiting would cost more than the potential benefit of an unannounced refresh.

Use Nvidia’s official buying and product page to identify confirmed models, then compare the live retailer price rather than assuming the original MSRP is still available.

Wait when

  • You specifically need more than 12GB or 16GB of VRAM.
  • Your current GPU is adequate and you can tolerate an unknown release date.
  • You want confirmed specifications and independent testing before spending.
  • A refresh could change the prices or availability of existing cards.

Do not buy a current card solely on the assumption that it will retain value, and do not buy a rumored Super card before Nvidia confirms its warranty, specifications and supply.

Other options worth considering

The existing RTX 5070 Ti sits between the 5070 and 5080, while AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT class is a credible alternative for buyers prioritizing rasterized performance or memory capacity at a similar market tier. PCGamesN highlighted the RX 9070 XT as competitive pressure against Nvidia’s 5070 Ti class. AMD’s official graphics product list is at amd.com/en/products/graphics.

Choose GeForce when CUDA, Nvidia-specific software, DLSS or particular ray-tracing features are essential. Choose AMD when its price, raster performance and memory capacity better match your games and applications. The RTX 5090 is the confirmed flagship option for maximum throughput, but it is excessive for ordinary 1440p gaming and is not a substitute for a value-oriented refresh.

Rumors about a wider Super family

Some reports also mention an RTX 5070 Ti Super and, in a June 2026 leak, a possible RTX 5060 Super with 12GB. VideoCardz described a rumored 5080 Super/5070 Ti Super/5070 Super lineup, while Tom’s Hardware reported the possible 5060 Super. None is confirmed by Nvidia, and these side rumors should not be used to make purchase decisions.

What to verify before upgrading

  • Official Nvidia product page and launch announcement;
  • Final VRAM capacity, bus width and memory speed;
  • Independent gaming and application benchmarks;
  • Board power, connector requirements and physical dimensions;
  • Actual local retail price and availability;
  • Whether your monitor and CPU can use the additional GPU performance.

Do not choose a power supply, case or cooling upgrade from rumor-only power figures. Wait for Nvidia’s final specifications and the board partner’s installation requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the RTX 5080 Super definitely have 24GB?

No. 24GB is a widely reported rumor. Nvidia has not confirmed the card or its memory capacity.

Will 50% more VRAM mean 50% more FPS?

No. Extra VRAM mainly prevents capacity-related slowdowns. Performance gains are small when a game or application already fits within the original memory buffer.

The Bottom Line

The rumored RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Super could be meaningful memory-focused refreshes at 24GB and 18GB, but they remain unannounced. With the launch reportedly on hold over 3GB GDDR7 costs and no official date, buy a confirmed RTX 5070 or RTX 5080 when you need one; wait only if your workload specifically needs more VRAM and your current GPU can carry you through the uncertainty.
