NVIDIA DGX Cloud vs. Building Your Own AI Infrastructure

DGX Cloud and an owned AI cluster cover different scopes. Compare the same workload, capacity, operating responsibilities, and full-period costs before choosing.

Neither option is universally cheaper or better. NVIDIA DGX Cloud offers managed AI capacity through cloud-provider partnerships; building your own means designing, acquiring, integrating, and operating compute, storage, networking, and software. Choose by comparing the same workload, capacity, utilization, region, term, and support scope over the same period—not by comparing a cloud GPU rate with a hardware purchase price.

What does NVIDIA DGX Cloud include?

NVIDIA describes DGX Cloud as its AI proving ground: operational issues encountered at scale inform reusable software, architectures, and reference implementations. Its current overview lists DGX Cloud offers with AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). NVIDIA describes these as co-engineered, accelerated AI training platforms, with flexible term lengths and access to NVIDIA experts. The specific configuration and terms depend on the offer.

That description is NVIDIA’s characterization of its own services, not an independent performance comparison or a guarantee that every provider offer has the same hardware, capacity, or terms. NVIDIA directs prospective buyers to marketplace trials or private offers; the reviewed official materials do not publish a standard public price or a matched comparison with owned infrastructure.

“DGX Cloud” also appears in the names of distinct products. Do not assume all of them have the same service scope:

What does building your own AI infrastructure involve?

Owning the infrastructure is not simply buying GPUs. NVIDIA’s DGX platform documentation describes DGX BasePOD as a prescriptive enterprise AI infrastructure approach and DGX SuperPOD as an AI data-center platform. The broader stack includes systems, storage, networking, cluster provisioning, workload management, monitoring, operating-system resources, and the teams and processes needed to keep it running.

NVIDIA’s Base Command Manager resources cover cluster provisioning, workload management, and monitoring, while its training materials address compute, storage, and networking. These are reference points for planning, not a buyer-specific architecture or quote. Your design still has to fit the workloads, facility, security requirements, and operating model you actually have.

NVIDIA’s NVIDIA Requirements for AI Clouds, version 2.4, dated September 1, 2026, illustrates the breadth of operations in a large GPU-cloud environment. It sets expectations for NVIDIA cloud partners around such areas as OS image deployment and updates, certified upstream Kubernetes versions, network and IP allocation, and service delivery. Those are partner requirements, not a universal checklist for every enterprise cluster or an independent measure of build cost.

How do the choices compare?

Decision area DGX Cloud questions Owned infrastructure questions
Workload and capacity What GPU configuration, cluster size, and term are quoted for the actual workload? What system and cluster configuration meets the same workload and performance target?
Utilization and variability How much capacity must be paid for during peaks and quieter periods? What flexibility is specified in the offer? What utilization is realistic across the ownership period, and how will spare capacity be used?
Time to usable capacity What delivery timeline does the provider give for the requested region and configuration? How long will procurement, facility preparation, integration, validation, and deployment take?
Operations and responsibility Which infrastructure, platform components, and incidents are covered by the offer, and which remain yours? Which teams will handle hardware, cluster software, security, monitoring, upgrades, and incident response?
Data and connectivity Where will data reside, and what transfer, interconnect, and access requirements apply? Can your facility and network meet the data, throughput, resilience, and security needs?
Full-period cost What does the private offer include, and how are storage, networking, support, and term priced? What are the acquisition or financing, facility, power and cooling, network and storage, staffing, support, maintenance, and refresh costs?
Scaling and control Under the actual terms, how quickly can capacity be added, reduced, or moved? How much lead time and capital are needed to expand, replace, or repurpose systems?

These are comparison questions, not evidence that one option is cheaper, faster, or more reliable. NVIDIA identifies flexible terms for DGX Cloud, but the details depend on the provider offer and customer terms. Confirm assumptions against the offer and your internal deployment plan.

How can you compare costs fairly?

Build a full-period model for the same work and target outcome. An hourly or monthly cloud rate is not directly comparable to the purchase price of a server: each covers a different scope, and ownership brings costs beyond the hardware itself. The cost inputs below are a practical comparison framework based on the difference in service and infrastructure scope; they are not a published NVIDIA formula.

  1. Define the workload. Record the training, inference, or other workloads; data volumes; target performance; and the capacity needed at peak and during typical periods.
  2. Match the configurations. For cloud, get the quoted GPU type, cluster size, region, storage, networking, support, and term. For an owned build, model the configuration that meets the same workload target, including supporting systems rather than GPUs alone.
  3. Set the same time horizon and utilization profile. Estimate how much capacity will be used and when. For cloud, include paid capacity during idle periods if the offer requires it; for owned systems, account for capacity that is purchased but underused.
  4. Include all operating costs. For cloud, clarify what the offer includes and how storage, data movement, networking, and support are charged. For ownership, include financing or acquisition, facility readiness, power and cooling, storage and networking, support, staffing, maintenance, and refresh assumptions.
  5. Price labor and responsibility realistically. Identify who will provision, monitor, secure, update, and troubleshoot each layer. A managed service may assume some infrastructure and platform tasks, but it does not eliminate customer decisions about workloads, users, or resource allocation.
  6. Model change, not just the initial deployment. Account for expansion, reductions, repurposing, replacement, and the lead time each option requires. Use written offer terms and explicit internal assumptions rather than a universal break-even threshold.

Keep each assumption visible in the model. The reviewed official sources provide no comparable public DGX Cloud price, universal utilization threshold, or break-even calculation, so a specific savings or payback claim cannot be supported without buyer-specific quotes and costs.

Who manages what in a managed option?

Run:ai on DGX Cloud is one specific managed-service example, not a description of every DGX Cloud offer. NVIDIA’s product overview describes a dedicated GPU cluster from cloud-provider partners, with storage and networking, support for training and interactive workloads, GPU scheduling and queuing, dashboards, NVIDIA AI Enterprise access, and NVIDIA support. The page describes an eight-H100-GPU-per-compute-node configuration for this service; that detail applies to the described Run:ai configuration, not to every DGX Cloud offering.

For this service, NVIDIA says it manages and maintains cluster infrastructure and platform components, including sizing, monitoring, updates, tuning, and remediation. Customers retain responsibility for their namespaces and for user access, roles, projects, and resource allocations. Confirm the responsibility split for the particular service and offer you are evaluating rather than applying this example to another product.

Can you choose a hybrid approach?

Yes. DGX Cloud Lepton documentation describes endpoints, development pods, batch jobs, managed infrastructure, and a bring-your-own-compute option that connects customer-owned infrastructure to the platform. That makes Lepton relevant when you want to consider managed platform capabilities alongside owned compute. It is distinct from the named DGX Cloud partner offers and from Run:ai on DGX Cloud; its availability and fit should be assessed on its own terms.

When is each approach worth evaluating?

Evaluate DGX Cloud when

  • You want to assess managed capacity through one of NVIDIA’s named cloud-provider partnerships.
  • You need to compare a provider’s quoted term and configuration with your expected workload, rather than commit to an owned cluster before those assumptions are clear.
  • You want a defined service scope or access to NVIDIA experts, and can verify what the specific offer includes and what remains your responsibility.

Evaluate an owned cluster when

  • Your organization is prepared to design and operate compute, storage, networking, software, and service processes as a system.
  • You can make a credible plan for utilization, staffing, facilities, support, and hardware refresh over the full ownership period.
  • You need to assess an on-premises deployment against your actual data, network, security, and control requirements.

Evaluate a hybrid when

  • You want to compare managed platform services with capacity connected to your own infrastructure; DGX Cloud Lepton documents a bring-your-own-compute path.
  • You need to separate the question of who owns the hardware from the question of who operates parts of the platform.

These are evaluation signals, not rules that determine the winner. The right choice depends on the configuration, workload, service terms, utilization, and costs your organization can establish.
