To fill cells down in Numbers on Mac, select the source cell or range, drag the yellow Autofill handle over the destination cells, and release. Check the destination first: Autofill replaces existing data in the range you fill.
Fill cells down with the Autofill handle

Drag the handle down over the destination cells, then release. You can also drag it across a row.

Review the destination range before releasing: Apple warns that Autofill overwrites existing data with the content being added. Apple’s Numbers for Mac guide explains Autofill.
Use the keyboard instead of dragging

Select the source cell or range.

Press Command-Backslash to turn on Autofill mode.

Use the arrow keys to expand the yellow border over the destination cells.

Press Return to finish filling.
Apple also lists Command-Backslash in its Numbers keyboard-shortcut reference. This method is useful when you want to set the range with keys rather than drag the handle.
Repeat content or continue a sequence
Repeat selected content
Select the cell or cells to repeat, then fill the destination range. Numbers copies the selected data and associated cell formatting, formulas, or fill. Comments are not copied.

Extend a sequence
Enter the first two values in adjacent body cells of the row or column, select both cells, and drag the Autofill handle across the destination range. Numbers uses the difference between the starting values to continue the pattern. In Apple’s example, starting with 1 and 4 produces 7 and 10 in the next cells. Use body cells to establish the sequence; headers and footers are not the cells described for this method.
Use the menu or troubleshoot a table that will not fill
With a suitable selection active, choose Table > Autofill Cells. Available menu actions depend on the selection, so some options may not appear for every range.

If Numbers will not let you modify the table, check whether it is locked. Select the table and choose Arrange > Unlock. Apple’s cell-entry guide includes this unlock step.
What changes after filling
Autofill does not create an ongoing link between the resulting cells: you can edit them independently afterward. Formulas that refer to the filled cells update automatically to use the new value.

Standard Autofill’s drag, keyboard, and menu methods are separate from Magic Fill. Apple’s Magic Fill guide describes a pattern-recognition feature for populating a column that requires an Apple Creator Studio subscription; that subscription is not required for the standard Autofill steps above.
