Fission splits heavy atomic nuclei; fusion joins light ones. Fission supplies electricity at today’s nuclear power plants. Controlled fusion remains a research and development effort, not a commercial source of grid electricity. The two processes differ in how they work, how they are controlled, and what must be engineered to make power.
How do fission and fusion work?
Fission splits a heavy nucleus
In fission, a neutron can strike a heavy nucleus, commonly uranium or plutonium, and split it into smaller nuclei. The reaction releases energy and additional neutrons, which can trigger more fissions in a chain reaction. In a conventional power plant, the heat from fission makes steam that turns a turbine-generator. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) describes the process in its fission and fusion comparison; the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains the steam-and-turbine process in its overview.

Fusion joins light nuclei
Fusion combines light nuclei, commonly hydrogen isotopes, into a heavier nucleus and releases energy. On Earth, candidate systems must create and confine conditions that allow nuclei to fuse. Magnetic-confinement designs include tokamaks and stellarators; inertial-confinement approaches use lasers or particle beams. A future power plant would also have to capture the reaction energy and convert it to useful output.

| Question | Fission | Fusion |
|---|---|---|
| What happens to the nuclei? | A heavy nucleus splits into smaller nuclei after neutron interaction. | Two light nuclei combine into a heavier nucleus. |
| Typical fuel | Heavy elements, commonly uranium or plutonium. | Light nuclei, commonly hydrogen isotopes. |
| Reaction conditions and confinement | A fission chain reaction is controlled in a reactor; the cited comparison sources do not specify a single confinement method. | Requires high temperatures and confinement; research approaches include magnetic confinement and laser- or particle-beam-driven inertial confinement. |
| Is a chain reaction involved? | Yes. Neutrons from fission can trigger further fissions, so the chain reaction must be controlled. | No self-sustaining chain reaction. Without the necessary operating conditions, fusion stops. |
| How is electricity produced? | Reaction heat makes steam that turns a turbine-generator. | A future plant would need systems to capture reaction energy and convert it into electricity; this is still an engineering challenge. |
| Deployment status | Used for electricity at operating nuclear power plants today. | Controlled fusion electricity remains under development; it is not an established commercial grid-power source. |
| Radioactive waste and safety | Produces long-lived radioactive waste and requires safety controls. | Not expected to produce the same kind of long-lived waste as fission, but fusion machines and materials can be radioactive and require safety oversight. |
| Unresolved engineering needs | The sources cited here do not set out a comparable list of unresolved fission-plant engineering needs. | Materials, tritium fuel supply, heat and particle exhaust, and electricity-conversion systems remain research and engineering needs. |
These comparisons draw on the NRC comparison, the DOE’s fission and fusion overview, and DOE’s discussion of fusion nuclear science and technology.

Why is fusion not yet a substitute for fission power?
Making fusion happen in an experiment is not the same milestone as building a reliable plant that sends net electricity to the grid. A power system must sustain the necessary conditions, manage the intense heat and particle exhaust, use materials that withstand the operating environment, secure and manage its fuel cycle, and convert reaction energy into usable electricity. DOE identifies materials, tritium, exhaust, and electricity-conversion systems as ongoing research and engineering challenges in its fusion technology overview.
The available sources establish that controlled fusion electricity is under development, but do not establish an authoritative date for commercial deployment. A specific promised year would overstate what is known.

What do fission and fusion mean for safety and waste?
Fission’s chain reaction must be controlled, and fission produces long-lived radioactive waste. Fusion differs because it does not depend on a self-sustaining chain reaction; if a facility cannot maintain the conditions needed for fusion, the reaction stops. That difference is not a claim that a fusion facility is hazard-free. The NRC says fusion is not expected to create the same kind of long-lived waste as fission, while also recognizing that fusion machines can produce radioactive material. See the NRC’s fusion overview and technology comparison.
