For a USB drive shared between modern Windows and Mac computers, choose exFAT in most cases. Use NTFS for a drive used mainly with Windows when its file-system features matter; choose FAT32 when a device or boot workflow requires it, or when all your files fit below FAT32’s 4 GiB individual-file limit. Check the requirements of any older or specialized device before formatting.

Quick comparison: NTFS vs exFAT vs FAT32
| File system | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| exFAT | Moving files between Windows and Mac; storing individual files too large for FAT32. | Support on older computers and specialized devices can vary; check the device’s documentation. |
| NTFS | A drive used mainly with Windows when features such as file permissions, journaling, encryption, or compression matter. | Apple says a Mac may read NTFS, but its built-in Disk Utility support does not write to it. |
| FAT32 | A device or boot workflow that specifically requires FAT32, or storage where every individual file stays below 4 GiB. | It cannot store a single file that is 4 GiB or larger. |
Which format should you choose?
Choose exFAT for everyday Windows–Mac file sharing
exFAT is usually the straightforward choice when a USB drive needs to move files between Windows and macOS and those files may exceed FAT32’s limit. Apple lists ExFAT as a Windows-compatible format and recommends it for Windows volumes over 32 GB when formatting in Disk Utility on a Mac. That 32 GB figure is Apple’s formatter guidance, not a universal maximum capacity for FAT32. Apple’s Disk Utility guidance explains its format choices.

Choose NTFS for a Windows-focused drive when its features matter
Microsoft identifies NTFS as the default file system for modern Windows. Its comparison lists metadata-only journaling, access-control lists, file-system-level encryption, and built-in compression among NTFS features. These are documented feature differences, not proof that NTFS is faster or more reliable for every USB drive. See Microsoft’s file-system functionality comparison and NTFS overview.
If you need to save files to the drive from a Mac, account for Apple’s built-in NTFS limitation. Apple says, “Disk Utility does not support NTFS format, which your Mac may be able to read from, but not write to.” Apple’s NTFS support article describes that behavior.

Choose FAT32 when a device or boot process calls for it
FAT32 remains useful when a device or workflow specifically requires it, but compatibility is not universal. Check the device’s documentation. The most important limit is the size of an individual file: Microsoft’s comparison lists FAT32’s maximum file size as 4 GiB. A drive can have plenty of free space and still reject a file that reaches that limit. Microsoft’s comparison lists the limit.

One special case is Windows installation media. Microsoft’s instructions use FAT32 for a flash drive intended to boot BIOS-based or UEFI-based PCs. If a Windows image file exceeds 4 GB, Microsoft documents copying the other files and splitting the image into smaller parts. This is a deployment workaround; it does not let FAT32 store an ordinary large file intact. See Microsoft’s Windows flash-drive installation instructions.

What the file-size limits mean in practice
FAT32’s limit applies to each file, not the drive’s total capacity
The 4 GiB maximum is a per-file limit. For example, a video file that reaches 4 GiB will not fit on FAT32 even if the USB drive has several gigabytes free. If that file needs to remain intact, use a format supported by every device that will access it, such as exFAT for a compatible Windows–Mac workflow.
exFAT is designed for larger files and storage devices
Microsoft describes exFAT as “the successor to FAT32 in the FAT family of file systems.” Its specification uses 64 bits to describe file size and says the format was designed to enable very large files and storage devices. Microsoft’s comparison lists no metadata-only journaling for exFAT, unlike NTFS. See the Microsoft exFAT specification and its feature comparison.

Format a USB drive from a Mac for Windows use
Apple’s Disk Utility guidance recommends MS-DOS (FAT) for Windows-compatible volumes 32 GB or less, and ExFAT for volumes over 32 GB. Treat this as Apple’s recommendation for its formatter, not as a general capacity ceiling for FAT32.

How to decide before formatting
- List every device that must read or write the drive. Confirm format support in each device’s documentation, especially for older or specialized equipment.
- Check your largest individual file. If any file is 4 GiB or larger, FAT32 cannot store it intact.
- Consider whether Windows-specific features are needed. NTFS provides capabilities such as access-control lists and metadata-only journaling; those features alone do not establish a speed or reliability advantage for your USB drive.
- Check for a special requirement. A boot workflow or device may call for a particular format regardless of your usual preference.
- Back up the contents before changing the format. Formatting removes the existing files.
